Alocasia African Mask leaves drying with yellow rings Help

Litchfield Park , AZ(Zone 9b)

I need help with my Alocasia Amazonica, African Mask. The leaves are drying in spots, often yellow ringed. I have the plant on a stand near, but not in an east facing window. I water it weekly and mist it occasionally. Is it too dry, not enough light or what. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Hi dee.

How does the rest of your Alocasia plant look over all? You are only showing one leaf that is dying off and that may be due to the age of the leaf. If the other foliage on your plant is showing the same condition's then we can assume you have another problem.

I have a total of 6 leaves, 3 are looking good and 3 are not.

You may need to back off the watering a bit for this Alocasia. This particular plant for me, does best with allowing the soil to dry out a bit before I water it again. Also, have you checked the plant for "bug" problem's? These type of plants are a magnet for spidermites.

Thanks for the suggestion I may have been watering/misting too much as I was thinking a tropical plant would need more.
SO far no bugs but I will keep a watch out.

Dee,
I just fixed this same problem with mine! I was told by the local garden center that the Osmocote beads I had added to the top of the soil were poisoning it. I had the same leaf problem you do, which then turned to an entire burnt orange leaf, then DEAD!

I had it in a huge pot first of all, so I bought one 1/2 the size. (I tend to over pot, but not anymore) I took the plant out of the pot, shook off the dirt, then hosed off the root ball until clean. It seemed a bit rash at the time, but what did I have to loose. It was dying. I then re-potted it in a nice Foxfarm Ocean potting mix (organic) doesn't contain a ton of fertilizer like miracle grow or scott's does.

A couple weeks later, after cutting bad leaves off at the base, I had new shiny green growth, and for the first time ever, a flower!
I will post the sequence of photos from asking for help like you are, to what I have now. This only took about a month for it to recover.

Good luck!

Then this happened, and I had to cut it off at the very bottom.

After treatment! What a turnaround!!

With much new growth and a flower for the first time. I water it only when it gets dry. And it doesn't need much light, but likes to be warm, so be careful in the winter.

Your plants looks exactly like mine. I have it in Miracle Gro potting soil that already has plant food in it and I may have given it more. Tomorrow I am going out to buy new soil and repot it. Thanks for the tip. I hope I am as lucky are you were.

Good luck. The soil I put it in is by Foxfarm. It is all organic and the Ocean variety... There are natural added fertilizers in it like bat guano, worm castings, & fish emulsions, but nothing chemical. I have been hearing bad things about miracle grow from my tropical buddies. So maybe stay away from it. I don't think this plant likes the fertilizers.

So good luck and let me know your results. I got mine to look like this after a month. But make sure you cut the dead leaves at the base of the stem.

Kristen--Where in CT. did you buy the Foxfarm soil? I can only buy in small quanities and have trouble finding soil w/o added fertilizer. Even the bags of perlite have it now. Very annoying! Great job saving your plant!

Thanks, I would not have been able to do it with out the help of others. I am a new gardener and inquired at my favorite store Logee's. I also asked around here...

I have a store in Old Saybrook called Organicaly Grown. It may be a small chain, but very small... I don't know if they have a website. But the stock they have is decent.

I was hoping for something closer to the mass line...oh well. I'm a big Logee's fan as well! ^_^

Thanks!--for some reason my puter won't load that page. I have an iffy wi-fi connection, so will try again later.
