Daily Pics. #324

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

I was watching this female Cardinal feeding in the shade. The moment I saw her head enter a beam of sunlight, I clicked the 40D.

ducbucin, called something to my attention. I was concentrating so hard, hoping this Cardinal would present a "head in the sun" shot that I miss-ID'ed it. As duc called to my attention, this is a juvemile male Northern Cardinal. I just wanted to set things straight.

I watched as Papa Brown-headed Cowbird feed alongside a youngster - you reckon it's his?. I was wondering if another species of bird sat on the egg.

I still love the bright color of my Goldfinches. Here's a male that went on to feed at a feeder containing Black Oil Sunflower seeds.

SusanL, Papa House Finches are very attentive with their young. Have you watched the Moma chased Papa away when Mama deems it was time for the 'kids' to feed themselves at the feeder? It's hillarious.

Burd, some great pictures of the GBH and Great Egrets. Especially the Egrets chase. The Heron scratching is a fun one. Hacks, those juvies B-h Cowbirds are cute, nice series.

Red Bellied Woodpecker hugging the feeder. The Redheaded ones will 'bump' them away. But they're relentless, they kept coming back. ^_^

Oh, I didn't see any band on Nan's Redbellied either.

Pelle, He is not aggressive ,He was looking for chipmunks, came out of our wetlands.if he becomes annoying ,we will move him over to the private lake across the road. I used zoom !!!!

This might just be the most amazing thread yet! I love all thre great photos. Here are a few favorites:

Lily_love, LOVE that heron with his catch. You did a great job starting this thread.

Pelle, that vulture on the roof is soooo cool!

Nanny, I love all your pics but the white-breasted nuthatches are my favs.

lagerfran, LOVE LOVE LOVE those barred owls! Wow! Especially with the Spanish moss hanging behind them. Just beautiful.

The grebe chicks, Resin, totally wonderful.

HollyAnnS, what an amazing sight that must have been. Love the pics. Can't wait to see a wood stork one day.

Susan and Hack, you sure are making me miss those goldfinches! Of course, they winter here when their coloring is all boring. Still miss them!

thebestmissy, I just love Kites!

rockminer, cool birds.

Duc, must be tough having hundreds of fab photos!

Burd, ditto to Duc. Amazing.
VA_Wild_Rose -- AWESOME pileated pics. So cool. Thanks for sharing those.

Did I say a few favorites?! Awesome, people, just awesome.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

WildRose, I'm so jealous of your adorable Pileated Woodpecker baby. It's just the cutest little thing. My DH and I went to a park yesterday looking for one and never did find any of them.

Nanny, great photo of that Catbird!

SusanLouise, cute picture of dad feeding the little one!

Hack, are you sure that's a female Cardinal? It looks like an immature male with so much red feathering. Great job on the Cowbirds. That little one is a cutie.

Burd, great job on the Egret picture. What a great job on the closeup!

Lily, not fair! You get to see Lord Byron and the Red-bellied wps!!

Hugger, I'm sure it would be weeks before I could even step out of the house if I'd seen that snake! Hope he'll move on soon for you.

We went birdwatching yesterday at one of our state parks. I wanted to see the Pileated that's in residence, but no such luck-maybe next time. Anyway, we found lots of Green Herons. This guy was hunting from the boardwalk along an inlet off our lake.

We found this Green Heron standing in the top of a tree watching us.

Also found this one legged Spotted Towhee who didn't like us so close to "his" area and he sure let us know about it.

Great shots duc! Love the Green Herons!

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Hacks, the lens? Is a built in one with my Pannasonic Lumix 18x. The shot (most of mine are behind glass window) I was just very lucky. lol. Duc. Poor that Towhee he's pretty tough to survive. Great pics. The Western Kingbird is so neat with its light yellow belly. Thanks Elph.

Central, AL(Zone 7b)

Look! Mizzy and Mitch, my RedBellied WP pair's brought their juvie to the feeder today. The poor couple has to tough it out with Lord Byron and his Missus, since it appears that their (the Redheaded WPs) babies hatched as well. For they have been busy coming and going from the feeder non-stop this afternoon after the rain.

Duc, if Nan will send me a Pileated Wp. I'll in turn send you my Redbellied and Redheaded. lol. It's fantastic to see that the juvie is almost as big as its parent's size. My first time to notice the juvie in this species. Such cutie pie!

ducbucln - Quote, "Hack, are you sure that's a female Cardinal? It looks like an immature male with so much red feathering." duc, you are totally correct, not sure how I missed it. Must have taken a "stupid pill" Thanks for calling it to our attention. I'm going to edit that post.

AND that one legged Spotted Towhee and I have a lot in common, I'm even missing my right leg, too. Cool. He looks good, though - great colors.

Lily_love - I once had a Panasonic Lumix 18x. That is one nice camera.

I saw some more juvies today. Brown Thrashers. I played around to created a composite. On the left, in the yellow box, is a close-up of one of the youngsters. Over on the right are two about to enter the underbrush, I guess, where they hatched.

I liked what Burd did when he cropped the head of his Tufted Titmouse, so, I thought I'd try it with the Nuthatch.

Hack

Burd, how did you get yours so large?

I cut off a little sapling about three feet high (so I could see the suet feeder behind it) and this Mockingbird now has a new perch.
