Yo!
Where you all at? I'm hiding from the heat right now and thought I'd share a couple of thoughts with you.
Lately, I've been reading up on Will Rogers. He was a political commentary/satirist who lived from the late 1800's through most of the 1930's (born in OK). He was to my grandparents generation what Kennedy was to my parents. Everyone remembers where they were and what they were doing when they heard the news of their deaths.
I guess I define myself as part of the Challenger Generation. I do remember being at school when John Kennedy died. Didn't understand why the adults were all crying and upset til many years later. Challenger hit me in the gut. Especially since I was going to visit my brother at the Johnson Space Center (where he worked as an intern, while in college), the following week.
It's amazing how much some things don't change.
Back on topic, here's two on my home state of California. Still true today. : - )

"I never saw California looking so beautiful---the tremendous rains out here have washed away all the real estate signs."
~Will Rogers~

"Everything out here in California that is not an apartment is a "ranch." If you have 20 feet in your back yard, it's a "ranch." If you got an old avocado bush (no matter if it bears or not), why, it's an "avocado ranch."
~Will Rogers~

Last winter we felt that way after the flood (1st quote).
We always feel that calling a tiny lot a ranch, is pretentious. I guess he thought so too. : - )
The people we deal with, own sections, not acres. BIG difference. : - )

The Will Rogers ranch comments reminds of one my favorites to describe them self as someone that they might not possibly be -

"All hat, no cattle."

Will Rogers, was a pretty canny guy, considering he decided that, "working in a circus pretty much ruined him for regular work." BTW, he dropped out of school in the 8th grade. He could be pretty succinct.
BTW, I asked my son what event would define his generation, and it wasn't Michael Jackson (which he said was mostly Gen X), but their generation would always be defined by where were you on 9-11. Smart kid. (Still think he might be a changling, LOL!) : - )

Here's another one from Will Rogers.
"As high priced as it is to live in, I don't see anyone leaving the country."

Or, another one by Will Rogers, on the Disarmament Conference after WWI.
" Well, the conference met today and appointed a Commission to meet tomorrow and appoint a delegation which will eventually appoint a subcommittee to draw up ways and means of finding out what to start with first."

Seems like some things never change. : - )

I've still been popping in, but didn't have any good quotes to share. You really have been carrying this thread all by yourself lately, SW!

So, here's my contribution today:

"Laugh as much as you breathe and love as long as you live." ~ unknown

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

I also read your quotes, upon occasion, but have not had anything to add. When sharing this one with SW on Saturday, she suggested adding it to this thread. I had received a list of "You Know You're Addicted to Gardening When..." and another DG'r and I had ammended it to include some of our thoughts and were up to 38. I now have #39:

You Know You're Addicted to Gardening When... 39. You are watering your garden at midnight (and not your roof) by the light of the fire trucks putting out the wildfire behind you.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I still think that shows you're a dedicated gardener, but now you have me wondering about the previous 38/ LOL!
I don't mind posting quotes, but I do get lonely when no one else does, or even comments on them.
Loved yours kwan, the first one didn't quite add up, the second one is so funny, sounds like something my G.pa would quip. He didn't talk much.

Bookerc, how could I forget you! You may not chime in often but when you do, it always hits home. : - )
Good advice at any time. : - )

Don't let QG fool you. She has all her DH's jokes memorized and #'d. LOL! A joy to talk to and hang out with.

"I don't mind posting quotes, but I do get lonely when no one else does, or even comments on them."

How about this, SW...

When you have a quote that's cute, I say, "Ahhh..."
When it's sad, I say, "Ohhhhhh..."
When it's thought-provoking, I say, "Hmmm...I never thought of that."
When it's beautiful, I say, "How lovely."
When it's funny, I say, "Heh heh heh..."

If you can hear those after you post, you know you aren't alone.

"Eagle said,
I have been to the end of the earth.
I have been to the end of the waters.
I have been to the end of the sky.
I have been to the end of the mountains.
I have found none that are not my friends."

You Know You're Addicted to Gardening When... 38. You can’t help pulling weeds at friend’s homes, schools, office buildings, the library

Now # 38 is me. I actually got caught by a neighbor last Friday pulling crab grass out of his front landscape. They all know I am a nut so no big problem.

DH goes to the Cardiologist tomorrow. Hope we find out why he is swooning.

You know you are a gardener when you can have fun with a hose and lose track of time.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

evelyn, as far as I know it was never restricted to just CA Gardeners. Lots of people from all over have posted on it. I guess we just need to tell our DG friends to click on over.
Very nice poetry. I have a fondness for poetry, especially Haiku.

I think when Desert Pirate started the thread, it was because DG Admin. had just moved two of the most popular threads on the CA Regional Forum to different forums. Kwanjin lives in Utah, for instance. Marie lives in AZ as does our RoadRunner.
Then a lot of people quit posting and didn't renew their subscriptions after DG changed hands.

Okay kwan, it beats, "That's so special." : - )

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

I am not sure where I posted the whole list. Think it may have been the beginning of summer and maybe at 'Strawbales'. Faywray from Trash to Treasure and I tweaked the list I found on some site. #38 was hers cuz she really likes pulling weeds. Me, not so much. She lives in Ohio with tons of grass and backs up to a corn field. Not as many weeds grow there as we have.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Sorry SW we all deserted you. I love that about you though, you don't give up!
I have no excuse for being AWOL except to say I'm 'spring cleaning.' Been busy in the iris garden in the evenings.
Here's my contribution for today...

'Always give you children two choices at mealtime---take it or leave it!

Or like I told my kids, 'this is not Carl's Jr., you can't have it your way!

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Goodness weegy,
I never felt you abandoned me, besides I have your phone #. You were busy looking after our Emma part of the time. She sure is growing up to be a living doll. : - )
Lately, I've been telling my boys to forage, and if they fix something make sure I get fed too! LOL! : - )
Boys should know how to cook. It's not like it was when I was growing up and we had to do every thing from scratch. My goodness they have directions on the box. I know they can read, they had to learn how to play those video games (no, I'm not joking, that's what motivated my youngest to learn to read, my eldest taught himself.)
I'm going to save those saying/thoughts, weegy, to use on grandkids. : - )
QG, the reason I asked is because I've always found watering to be very relaxing, and weeding is like aggressive therapy, after a while it becomes a compulsion to yank that weed. : - )
Okay, back on topic. Not a thought exactly, but thought provoking prose. Enjoy!

"Whatever be the method by which a true friendship is formed, whether the growth of time or the birth of sudden sympathy, there seems, on looking back to have been an element of necessity. It is a sort of predestined spiritual relationship. We speak of man meeting his fate, and we speak truly. When we look back we see it to be like destiny; life converged to life, and there was no getting out of it even if we wished it. It is not that we made a choice, but the choice made us."

Yes you do have my phone number Jules! I watch Emma 3 days a week and the other days are spent catching up around here and the iris garden, plus I had customer's orders to fill. Still have a couple to dig this weekend but that should be the end of the season. The the fun begins with digging and dividing the whole front half of the garden, that is about 200 or 300 clumps to thin and then the new drip can be put in.
Only 1 of my kids can cook, the others have no desire. Of course, I never taught them..bad me...but they didn't want to learn. But, they can read!!!!
You can use those sayings anytime SW!
...and speaking of kids and video games...

Computer games don't affect kids, I mean if Pac Man affected us as kids, we'd all be running around in darkened rooms, munching pills and listening to repetitive music”

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Sorry, I am on a roll. You Know You're Addicted to Gardening When... 37. You drive around the neighborhood hoping to score extra bags of leaves for your compost pile.

I do enjoy watering, and also find it relaxing. A drip system would be nice for back up, but would feel like I was deserting my garden to use it all the time.

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

I still get out and do what needs to be done with the drip, mainly repair the old soaker hoses constantly. It just works for me because it is such a large area.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Yes, having seen your rows, a drip system is called for. It would be hard to get someone to fill in for you by hand watering. I like the idea of the tape drip system Drip Works has in their catalog for rows that have the same watering needs. For my yard it is hard to put it all all the same system as plants are mixed up as far as their water needs.

QG, can I add one to your list?

#40 You know you're addicted to gardening when you keep ziplock bags and a sharpie marker in the glove box of your van, in case some seeds mysteriously fall into your hands when you are away from home.

(I do have to qualify that one; the gardener at the Illinois State Horticulture Center told me I was welcome to collect a few seeds any time, so I wasn't stealing them. LOL)

#41 You know you are addicted to gardening when you step outside your back door to let the dog out in the morning, and four hours later go back inside with grass stains on your knees and a bucket full of vegetables. I do try to make a point of getting dressed before I let the dog out for this very reason.

Angie

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Angie,
You got me rolling with laughter with your two. I almost always carry something to collect seed in. I don't always have the sharpie with me since they tend to disappear around Christmas time when the guys need them for marking tags.
Guilty on #41 too. I don't care if people see me in my jammies'. But I live on a farm, and nobody shows up unexpectedly, and if they do, they've probably already seen me in my jammies. What I have learned is to put my hair up before I go out to feed the dogs and open the gh, and checking for critters swimming. Found a b.fly in there yesterday, and rescued it.
I digress, good ones, both of them. : - )
We'll have to ask QG if she had them already! LOL!

Good grief. I wrote aresponse to #'s 40 & 41 and it's not there. Have some similar ones and got 3 more from fayewray in OH too. I'll have to figure a way to publish the whole list again. Maybe on the 'Helloooo' site as that does not have a defining subject. Not sure the list qualifies for this thread.

Mackinaw, IL(Zone 5a)

I'd love to see the whole list! Funny how like-minded people tend to find each other, isn't it? Perhaps we all feel a little more normal, knowing how many others are just as obsessed as we are. My newest obsession is hydrangeas. I've added 5 in the last couple of years, and my wish list just keeps growing! And lilies. . .I planted about 50 new ones this year. Oh, yeah, and iris. Got going on an iris co-op, and got some real beauties. And daylilies. And clematis. My spring bulb obsession isn't new, but isn't getting any less. And I think I'd better stop before I think too hard about this. LOL
