Camellia or WHAT?

Helena, AL

*HAVE POSTED 2 NEW PHOTOS* Still don't know what it is. May 12, 2010. Have a plant that I would like to know what it is. Looks like it has small camellia leaves, dark green. New growth is dark burgandy color. Branches grow upright and are stiff. Along the branch are single leaves staggered an at the base of each leaf is where the flower blooms. Blooms are dark pink, small (around 1-2"), and fragrant. Asked local nursery about it, they think it is a type of camellia. Have other camellias but blooms nothing like them. It bloomed in March. Thanks for ANY help I can get. Absolutely LOVE this plant.

The resolution of your images is so low it's really hard to see anything. Can you upload a larger file? I agree that by the description it does sound like some kind of Camellia.

Thank you. I will post a better picture tomorrow. Should have known not to use the cell phone.

Wow, those pictures were taken with a cell phone?! Then I'd say they were pretty good. Unfortunately sometimes the key to IDing a plant lies in the subtleties of bud shape or stem texture or leaf veination, all of which can't be determined from a small/fuzzy picture. Remember when you do take the picture to use the macro setting for good close-up shots. To use macro, look for this symbol on your camera:

Here are two better pictures, I hope.

Yep, that's a Camellia for sure. It's probably one of the spring-blooming hybrids like 'Crimson Candles', 'Spring Awakening' or 'Bright Eyes'. The hybrids tend to look stringier than the Japonicas and I know there are several fragrant cultivars out there.

Oh bunches of hugs and kisses to you!!!!! It is either Spring Awakening or Crimson Candles. Either way, I plan to get both!! I can NOT thank you enough!
