Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

53°, wind W 16mph, windchill 41°, Mostly Sunny

South Hamilton, MA

41 supposed to approach 60. Be careful with the tree, Victor.

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

62 and sunny. We had frost and freeze warnings the past 2 nights. I think the lake protected me from them, no signs of frost.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Windy!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Up to 23mph here

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Finished the tree. I am BEAT! Two minor casualties. A branch off one dwarf jm - not terrible, and a branch off a witch hazel. Also not bad. The last major branch to fall clipped the FIOS wire but did not knock it out. Just pulled it out of a clip that holds tension on it. I can fix that.

The major wind did not help.

1 speck of lint will not stay on the laundry I put out on the line with this wind

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

good to hear the tree is down and that you did it with a friend instead of $$ someone. damage is not to bad - i get more than that from the white pines in the winter - lost two branches on a chishno improved (sp) :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Was a real challenge with the wind. Even with ropes, when it comes down and the wind catches it, it goes where it wants.

Tomorrow the three replacements go in. Then I will probably need some mulch.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Our calm morning turned into a very windy day. I edged, pruned, weeded and deadheaded the spent spring flowers until 5:00. Now I am dead too. We even got the veggie bed cleaned up and weeded and ready to bring in a rototiller next week. DH moved around 2 yards of compost to beds in need. Then he cleaned up my huge piles of pruned limbs that I had left in piles.

I also unpacked 2 orders. One nice one from Avant and an equally good one from Garden Crossing. I will plant them when the Lazy S'S order come. I expect it tomorrow. Planting will wait until next week as I am heading up to Boston in the morning for a couple of days to work in the Pottery Studio and to go to the Tower Hill Daffodil show on Saturday. David Burdick, a specialty grower of Narcissus is doing a tour, so I am going to tag along. I grow some of his bulbs. I will come back on Sunday night.

I left hints with DH as to what I would love to see done when I get back if he wants to work outside. 20 yards of Mulch is coming next week, so I have to have all the beds finished. Hope the weather is good. It looks OK for next week. No Frost. No rain, just possible showers on Monday.

Now 52 with wind at 15 to 30MPH. Clear. Patti

Thomaston, CT

Very windy here, but I spent most of the day with banks & lawyer, & financial stuff....too depressing for words! The pups look so cute in that photo, Louise, & the rainbow was a good sign, Patti. Glad you got the old JM out, Victor...not a fun job.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

The wind was just crazy out there, I couldn't even be out there to play with the dog. I mean a nice breeze I like but it was just ridiculous.

Robin, hang in there!!!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

yes it was crazy... going uphill from here... 50 now going to 78

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

46 going up to near 80. WHAT????

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

55 and sunny. Finally, less wind! 88 tomorrow! Too hot.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Was 54 here and colder inside:) getting ready to heat up

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

57°, wind NW 9mph, cloudy

Did the weather station arrive?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Supposed to get here today.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Mostly sunny, 59 degrees with a brisk wind blowing from the NW. Just in from walk about and I was too optimistic on the little green winter moth caterpillar situation I'm afraid. Over those couple of rainy, cloudy, colder days they have emerged and have attacked the apple tree, roses and the oak trees just leafing out. Silk strands are starting to fall with a little green menace at the end. I really hate these things.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Nice breeze, very warm. 79

Tomorrow high of 88!! WHAT??? Is it July??? What is with this weather????

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Beautiful and 70 here today, but there is a good bit of wind still. Ticks are terrible this year. Ugh. Still unpacking and settling in, but am so excited to see so many things popping up!

Patii - do you know if Garden Crossings sends a colorful nice catalog with a gift certif.? Or anyone else know? My sister is recovering from surgery on her hip from an injury and she is having a Big Birthday, so I want to send her a plants gift certif, but also want her to enjoy a pretty catalog to shop from while she's recuperating from the surgery. I love the White Flower Farms catalog, but their plants can be iffy now. She lives in the NC mountains, zone 6, so I'd love some suggestions. Thanks!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

No, I don't believe they have a print catalog, Louise.

Great day here!

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Victor! Do you think Bluestone Perennials would be a good one?

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Bluestone has a nice catalog of well tested plants. A proven winners catalog came with my Garden Crossings order today but as Victor said they do not have one of their own.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not a fan, though others seem to love them.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Pat. I noticed that Bluestone was ranked very high in the Garden Watchdog and thought the catalog looked nice too. Victor - why are you not a fan? Have you had a bad experience with them?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Plants are just too small. And I hate all those peanuts!

Thomaston, CT

Here is my order that came from Bluestone....the plants are small, but nice & healthy...I, too, hate the peanuts! Oh, weather here is delightful....spent a lot of time planting my order after taking the girls to the library. Calling for 80s tomorrow, 90 on Sun. Great tornado weather!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

nice.... other than the tornado part... love all the new babies!!!

South Hamilton, MA

We bag peanuts & take them to UPS store a couple towns away. No pay, but it gets rid of them.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Hmmmm. I'll have to think about that. Marilyn - your new babies do look healthy though! Is the price of the plants in line with their size?

Thanks for that input, Victor! I sometimes put the peanuts in the bottom of my barrels so that I don't have to use so much soil when I plant my impatiens.

Lucy - that's a good idea!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

louise they are small (not tiny) but very healthy and will take off - next year they will be big plants - i think the price is very good - peanuts i do not like although many use them not a deal breaker for me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

To me, they are tiny. If you're strapped for $$, then they are okay.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Thanks, Bill - I never mind small plants if they are healthy enough to explode the second year. I was very disappointed in the 3 echinaceas I got from Garden Crossings....expensive, very small, lost After Midnight and the other two are still smallish after 2 years. I much prefer buying plants in person and not from mail order, but this gift to my sister requires the mail order deal.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

(lol Victor)

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Now: 57°, mostly clear

cranking up the heat tomorrow...
