Garden Projects 4 - 2010

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Edged my expanded front garden today, I'm reusing those concrete scalloped borders that were already there. I don't like them but hey it saves me $.
Went to Lowes and got some soil, mulch and rubber mulch edging and tree rings.

Wha, How about towing the two wheeler with the truck up that hill. Love that new house.

Yes, lots of vibs is always an option. I have zillions. Also high bush blue berries and a patch of raspberries.

flowerjen, I hate using a material for edging, but it sure works better than using nothing, which is what I do. Do those tree rings work? Shot looking west. This is the part of the property that we generously share with a herd of deer and a plethora of ravenous rabbits. grrrrrrrrrrrrrr. Patti

I've read reviews that if the rings are the good ones, made in usa, nice and thick that they do work. Let ya know.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oooohhhhhhh aaaaaaahhhhhhhh!!!

Patti Body has to sleep sometime, just did it daytime. Combine high bush blueberry & elderberry? Great gobs of jam!!!!!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Bill love the birdhouses and clems will look nice climbing up the posts. You may have said already but what is planted there where the five green posts are?
Good work Victor. It is easy to get doing more than you were intending to do. My strength and age are stopping me more often now from doing that too much in the beginning of the season. New places to plant are always such a fun thing to ponder. Why does a JM getting first mention not surprise me.
Jen sounds like lots getting done out your way too. Reusing things is usually always a good idea and saves money for more plants. Good for you.
Patti what a great job you all did clearing that space. I know it won't stay that empty for long. Glad you are feeling a bit better, it is so hard to feel sick this time of year.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks, I did sleep last night pretty well and I do feel better, and now up and ready to try to plant some DL's, Hosta, and some real treasures that I got from Seneca Hills that are going in what we call the Dell around the Endless stream. I also have some Japanese Maples to plant, no thanks to the influences of Victor and Wha!

Good idea about planting Sambucus down in that new space. DH loves that Elderberry juice. Have a good day all. Patti

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice to hear from you, Cousin Nut! You look like you're very busy. Wish I could ship you a cinnamon fern. I have nice ones in my woods here. I just potted up a couple to sell. They're so pretty, and one of my faves.

Is it too early to plant out dahlia tubers here? Our last frost date is like the first week of May or some such. I just bought 3 different packages of dahlias from HD. Thought I'd try them for something different, and the colors looked really luscious.

Your bird houses are looking nice, Bill. Hope you can find a way to get your 'stolen' post home (he heee!). Don't worry, I 'steal' rocks, too. LOL!

Patti, your place is looking great.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Me too, Patti, but I am very sore. Hope the hike helps.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thx for the comments on the b-houses!

that would work patti - although i am going to try and remove the back seat from my taurus (it really is a bull!) and slide them in:) that is how i have been doing it up to now although with the seat in - i cover the seat with an old bed sheet and lay plywood over the seat, against the back and front, get the post standing close to the car, tip it in and gravity and some pile driving does the trick - if can get that seat out i think it will go - it is on a main road here (no homes) so backing up to the hill is not really an option during the day - i "sort of" have permission to get it if i can - which means a cop stopped asked what it was doing, shuck his head, wished me luck and drove off:)

pat those are raspberries, each section has a different type - have not really picked much fruit yet - two red - two black.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

hike will help a lot victor - getting the blood flowing is the key

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

How VERY exciting that you are growing dahlias Cousin Nut ^_^. They will take a week or two to break ground and you can cover them if it's going to be frosty but the key is the soil temp. Needs to be above 60F which yours is probably not up to yet. I dig my holes in advance and let the sun warm the soil up before I plant. Works like a charm. Laying dark plastic on the patch works too.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Dahlianut, Glad you are back clever lady! Thanks, good tip. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

Looking stonishly astonishing as usual wha. What would happen if I pulled out the 3rd rock from the bottom of your arch?

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I like the pre digging of the holes tip.. thanks!!!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Looking good Bill, Ric

South Hamilton, MA

Fungus amungus.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

how long do you think the logs will last Bill?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

allison maybe 3 - 4 years or longer - not sure hickory is very hard wood - it give me time to fine stone stems

i like that lucy:)

they will look better when the hosta's are up - the dinoshroom might be completely covered as it is between three large hosta's

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

either way I love them all Bill

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Looks awesome Bill

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Nice, Bill. You'll have the cleanest birds in town!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

thank you everyone.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, Where are the gnomes???? Perfectly charming without them. What was I thinking? Like the arch. Super size my fries, please.

I have Boojum coming today, and I have weeds....alas it is what it is. We spent a week doing the clearing work and then I went away to do some pottery in Boston and then I got sick, so I am behind with my edging and spring weeding. Plants are not, they are all early to bloom this spring. I keep thinking that we are over a freeze, but doubt it. I have a few things to pop into the ground this morning. But with Boojum coming I will put thegarden work on hold until Sunday and be a good hostess. I am sure she will have some great ideas that will have my head spinning. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

patti have a nice time with kathy! no gnomes here unless i made from a hunk of granite:)

btw - my shade garden has a problem with voles/mole/chippies - a couple years back, probably the voles ate a couple hosta and other plants - i decided to plant anything new in pots - most with the bottom cut off and buried out of site - well yesterday after setting up those shrooms i decided to see what needed a container enlargement - they all had huge roots systems and i spent a good deal of time digging new holes and re-planting them - i have some other hosta lining my driveway that i am tempted to replant and bury in pots after seeing the results.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Weeds?! Gasp! Patti, what is going on??

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Sadly, Kathy had to cancel....back to weeding and planting today. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Maybe she heard about your weeds!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

that is too bad - hope everything is ok

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

So sad, Kathy will miss the 'weeds'.

Wha, looking stupendous!!!

Great tip, Dnut. I had picked up some at Lowes and have been waiting.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I had hoped to put her to work "a weedin". Dang. They aren't that bad, just not "Wha Worthy". I had even made a dent in the GH mess in her honor too. 3 weeks and the whole thing will be empty for the summer. We now have to figure out who to invite for a smoked turkey dinner. It is brining at the moment. Yummy. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yum!!!!!!!!!!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

love turkey!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Smoked must be great. FedEx???
