Garden Projects 4 - 2010

They are hungry little devils aren't they. I throw some seed on the ground , it helps to keep them out of the feeders but the squirrels are another story. I don't mind feeding them as long as they stay away from my flowers.
Here are a couple of shots of progress on the blue/yellow extension.

....and one from the other end. DH has the posts to put up on this end. There will be four just like the other side. Delphs were transplanted here and I hope the fence stapled onto the posts will give them better support without extra staking. Helenium 'Mardi Gras' is in front of them to help support too I hope. Have to wait to mulch the original garden so that the just barely emerging verbena b. seedlings are up enough to see better.

Nice going everybody.I have been away ,just checked in to see how the rock hounds are doing.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Great shots of the birdies, Celeste!

My dog kills squirrels and chippies all the time, but I still have tons of 'em. She can't get all of 'em, as their pretty good at avoiding her. I only use one seed feed and one suet feeder, and both are caged and squirrel proof.

Pat, your garden is looking great. That mulch really improves the look for sure.

Cool finch photos, Pixie. Pat, am liking the new garden...hope the delphs do well for you. I put a lot of fertilizer on mine this year, they are heavy feeders. I put seed back in my feeder several days ago, if the bear comes back, oh, well! I really need to see my birds.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Finally finished putting the main waterfall back together (mostly anyway). I'm getting old; I'm totally wiped after wrestling rocks all day yesterday and today. Here's before. I didn't like the way the rocks seem to be suspended in the air...

And here's after.

I still need to figure out a way to disguise the liner where the water gushes around the center stone. Small rocks don't stay due to the force of the water and larger rocks disrupt the flow too much. I might also rearrange some of the rocks when I have more energy.

Yes - drives me nuts when I can see the liner.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Songs That is beautiful.Worth every bit of your time and energy.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I'm jealous Songs... that's really nice!!

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Any suggestions, Victor?

ge & onewish - thanks :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Not really. Every nook and cranny is different. Can you pile more up in front of it?

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Maybe. I'll have to play around with it some more. As I look at the picture, I am left with the feeling that it appears a little too "scattered". My eye doesn't know where to settle on the picture. Looking at it in person doesn't have the same effect. Maybe once the plants fill in that will change, but I'd still like to work on it some more.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes, I think all the rocks do that. Can you tuck plants in among the rocks?

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

Is there some kind of glue you can use to stick down a smaller rock? It really is gorgeous!

I got a ton done this weekend and am completely wiped out too. I was feeling like such a slacker every time I looked at this thread. Every time I think it might be nice to have more space, I want to remember what I feel like right now.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

I did tuck some plants in - ferns and creeping jenny. They should really change the appearance in a few weeks. Here's another picture that shows that plants better - the first one is over exposed.

Colleen, yes I could use waterfall foam. That might end up being what I have to do. I was trying to avoid using it, but I don't think I have a choice if I want to cover the liner with rocks and still have the water go over the rocks (instead of under).

Songs it's lovely! I have no advice, sorry...only compliments. ^_^

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Songs, that is gorgeous! Looked great even before. I wouldn't have changed it, but it still looks great after. Makes me want to do something different with mine. I need a bigger waterfall. Yours is spectacular. I don't get enough water spilling down mine. It's just a trickle compared to yours. I have no advice to give, either. Yours looks way more professional than mine.

I got so much done today. Did more potting up of plants to sell. Moved an Andromeda that was crowding a large perennial. Moved and split up a bunch of DL clumps. Planted some potted stuff that I bought. I'm so tired right now, and I've had a pain in my right hip since Friday. Don't know what I did to it. Last night it was really inflamed. I couldn't sleep on that side at all. Not as bad tonight. Hoping it will go away so I don't have to go to the doc.

Liner liner what liner? I didn't even notice, looks great!!!

Huron, OH(Zone 5b)

Got some plants today to fill in a new bed.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I meant in between the rocks on the vertical face, Christina.

It does look great anyway.

Maine, United States(Zone 5b)

I guess this is my major project this year...this pic is from a few weeks ago but I haven't had a chance to work on it yet- maybe this week. I am putting in a small raised bed along the back property line for some of my hosta, but I couldn't afford to buy a palette of stones this year, so I bought a bunch of cinder blocks and slathered them with hypertufa on one side. I will spritz them with some acid stain for color, since hypertufa dries pretty light. Then my master plan is to get moss growing on them, which I don't think will be hard because this whole hill is moss and just gets more every year. I plan to cover the tops with a layer of flat stones....think I have enough from various other parts of my garden. I think they'll blend in pretty well when it's all said and done.

Psst Noreaster, never post pictures w/big rocks in them. Bill will be wandering around your back yard in no time!!

With that said, I really like the look of hypertufa. I think I need to learn how to do that!!!

I was thinking about Bill carving out rocks for Songs waterfall to hide the liner!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Good idea Sherry!

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Sounds like a good idea to me ;)

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Songs, have any large rocks you need to get rid of? Bargin with him! If you really want to tempt him...quartz. He likes Pink best of all. LOL

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Songs, You have one of the most beautiful water gardens that I have ever seen. HOLLY

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

you guys are funny

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Ha Ha. I may actually have some pinkish quartz! Unfortunately, I do not have any extra big rocks (lots of small ones). Everything I do have, I, um, "relocated" (yes, that's what Bill called it) from somewhere else.

Edited to say thank you Holly!

that's ok soj - i have two rock wall projects planned and most of the stone will come from my wifes co-workers property - she is even letting me use her small pick-up to get them here.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

SofJ beautiful that's all I can say. What a great job.

Noreaster you have done a great job with the hypertufa. Your new bed is going to look great. A really good idea when large rocks are not available or too heavy to deal with without help.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Noreaster, I like that look of they hypertufa. Your project sounds great. Is there a thread in DG that explains how to do that?

SongsofJoy, Joyous water fall. We did end up using some foam to stick the rocks in place in the falls part....seems to work, but I hated using it too. Having a liner showing is like an old fopa of having your slip showing....not these days. Patti

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

My Freudian slip often shows.

New Hampshire, NH(Zone 5b)

Intentionally, one might add :)

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

One might...^_^

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Funny!!!

The waterfall looks great!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Do you have lights on it, Christina?

hypertufa is on DG some where - I cant remember and I cant find it. One forum said to go to concrete and hypertufa but POOF
