No outside work here, ugh weather.
Garden Projects 4 - 2010
great today - have to play some musical chairs with a couple shrubs today, get those ferns in the ground, put up a bird house, and maybe figure out the mushrooms.
More work on the gazebo today and veggie garden. May need a trip to FIL's, I have a load of mushroom soil and plants for there. Ric

good luck with the rock ric - based on what was pulled out of your neighbors yard you have some work ahead of you!
How is that mushroom compost?
Wow that is a nasty obstacle. Big applause here for continued effort. Hope your muscles recover and good luck.
Wow! Ric, that's one monstrous rock! Something like that would frustrate me to no end. I don't have rocks like that in my soil. I have very few rocks to speak of here. Sometimes I wish I had lots, so I could put them to good use, but then again, I love how easy it is to dig the soil here, and how fertile it is. There used to be a farm on this property many, many years ago. Too bad your hot tub is out of order.
Noreaster, I'm always feeling overwhelmed by all that needs doing around here. It's really too much for one person. I get some help from Hope, and Dad helps with what he can, though he's really limited. Richard (our friend/tenant) has been a big help, so a lot more is getting done this year because of him. I may even get him to mow the lawn for me, and that will free up about 4 hours a week of my time.
Iris, I did not do anything on Sat., just too damp for me, but yesterday, in spite of some scattered showers, I did go out and get things done, cause I'm so limited on my days that I can work in the yard, and I have to take full advantage when I can. It never warmed up yesterday, as the sun didn't peek out from behind the clouds long enough. At one point I did take off my sweatshirt, as the sun was out briefly, but it wasn't long before it went back on.
Weather is really sunny here today, though a bit cool. I'm getting a late start. I way overslept. Didn't hear my alarm for some reason. Must have been really tired.

i could not get the last stone post home - could barely get the thing standing up and then struggled to get it on the two wheeler as it sank into the ground and couldn't get the base under the stone - finally got it down to the car and i just could not get it in - to heavy and/or to exhausted after getting it up and out the woods - had to roll it off the road and leave it behind - this one was bigger than the others and i questioned if i should attempt it - if i had managed to get it in the car i do not think it would have made it out.
was able to move two large vibs, move two lilac, dig out a huge bes, plant two conifers, dig a post hole and put up the birdhouse, and take a jm out of a container and plant it on the new enlarged bed in front (roots really grew in the last year) - will take it easy this afternoon and just weed and plant a couple jm's in containers - that's right i moved the 8 or 9 jm's from the garage outside under the deck to begin there acclimation.
Planted the four clems from Debbie. Still have not planted the small ones from Evey. Waiting for two trellis I ordered. Also have to raise the fallen arch arbor to underplant it with clems as well.
Moved more fern. I have one type that is suddenly spreading everywhere.
mowed the lawn, walked the lawn with weedBgone, and weeded half the yard - i am beat - those heavy rocks take their toll.
Hi all. WOWSER Cousin Nut and Ric you are tackling HUMUNGOUS projects. I have to go back and catch up on the past threads to see what everyone else is working on. I have been busy with the following projects:
1) new furnace
2) new hot water tank cuz the old water tank hated the new furnace
3) new sidewalk stone steps up the slope to the garbage cans cuz it was slippy and I fell
4) a new bed under the nanking cherry
AND (drum roll please) (ta-ta-ta-ta-ta-rum-de-pum-pum)
BABY SEEDLINGS AND DAHLIA SPROUTLINGS in the greenhouse!
I will take pics of all of the above except the new furnace and hot water tank cuz they are very boring looking. Hope everyone is well. ps I wore shorts this weekend ^_^
Hey D-nut Glad that your seedlings are sprouting. colder here, but we will forgive you the shorts.
Welcome back D-Nut!!!!
Hey stranger! How are you?
Now that I'm not wearing mittens in the house and its easier to type I'm pretty fabby, thanks everso, dear Victor. Although so far this season I did manage to fall off a ladder cleaning up the white spruce, and slipped and did a mud slide down the slope on my butt SO methinks I might be tipsier than usual this year. But like I say to my true luv 'Well at least I'm not boring!" (snort)
Wow - Olympic sports going on there, Nutty D?
Sounds like you made a new event called the 'slip n slide.' Hopefully you weren't hurt too badly.
WOOHOO! for seedlings and sproutlings
that's a snort for sore eyes my dear!!!!... glad to hear from you!!!
Missed your funnys, D-Nut
Hi d-nut!!
How are your bulbous things???
WELL to begin I'm starting with the sidewalk steps that were installed because of my mud slide (which was a pretty cool butt tobaggon ride but I did get really muddy and I did say a really bad word cuz I had hinted that a mud slide could happen. This is SO NOT the most attractive pic but this is the garbage can area so HEH what can you expect? Note that the akilter sidewalk blocks at the top with the cans on them are the orginals from 1960 which is why they are aslant. O also it's not finished cuz I still have to pack soil and straighten the lower stones which are just laid as you can see.
2nd and much more prettiful is the new bed that I built under the nanking cherry. I am filling it with annual impatiens this year. Note the cherry did not lose it's leaves in the fall. This happened to many of my shrubs and trees this w*i*n*t*e*r cuz we had a -30 dip while the leaves were still green in September. Yes -30F/C is about the same. I am just letting them do their thing cuz they are leafing out. Funky weird.
Off to the 'pics' thread now.
lookin good D-Nut... sorry I was slackin off this year and didn't start a babies thread.. my bad
finished weeding the yard today - moved three clems from under our deck that never grew much to hopefully better locations - one is a crystal fountain the other two will be a surprise its been so long since they were planted:) - also planted the cinanmon ferns - ordered 10 yards of mulch to be delivered tomorrow - hoping to get by with ordering only this batch
the rock post is still be the road - thinking of ways to get it home still - it is on a slope so a pick-up could back right up to it
I am cinnamonfernless. I need cinnamon ferns.
Love your solution to the mud slide D-nut. Also how odd that tree looks with leaves but your new bed and soon new green leaves will make a beautimous sight for sure. Your babies are all looking good too. Great work.
Bill no one can keep up with you, but the results speak for itself in a beautiful neat yard.
I have to say that my muscles are screaming at me this evening for making them shovel, haul and spread mulch after weeding and doing some transplanting. After a winter of little activity they are soooo not accustomed to manual labor yet. Lots more to do but I am happy with the results so far. Hope to get all the back gardens sorted out before the big plant orders arrive end of next week.
NuttyD - maybe Bill can STEAL some for you.
I killed myself today. Only a bit of cleanup left - mainly the pond area. Did things I had no intention of doing. One nice surprise - cleared out an area in an old bed of barberry and other crap and now I have room for new plants! It's a perfect area for a JM - AM sun only. Will have to think. Might add a tree to my Davidsan order.
i prefer to call it relocate to a better neighborhood:)
besides side of the road in the middle of no where does not meet the definition of stealing.
Depends who's doing the defining. ^_^
Nice to see dahlianut back.
Wha, could you use a boat trailer? Nice bird house
Victor, Always nice to find new yardage for more plants.
Here is part of our found land. More to do, but this may be it for this year, except for some fine pruning on the trees and shrubs we are keeping. We have no definite plans for it, but I think it would be a great spot for fruiting trees, except for the deer. It may become just a giant pumpkin patch this year.
I found some nice old beach plums and crab apples up beyond the crest of the hill that you can't see, and I can see more of them in an uncleared area, but like Victor, too dead to do more. I did only a little of the real work last week as my dear buddy from Brooklyn did most of it with my DH. I mostly pointed at what to cut and I dragged the detritus to the chip pile. Our chainsaw manic went home tonight, so the clearing party is over.
I have been sick the last two days, so I got almost nothing done, as I have been mostly sleeping with a just a few attempts at weeding. But I do feel better tonight. I managed on watering the GH and organizing some plants to plant tomorrow. Off to bed as I got no sleep last night as I had slept most of the day. Dumb. Patti
that is a lot of space - lots of vibs could be planted there!
yup a small trailer or small pick up as it is on a slope that you could back right up too - have also debated just walking to it with my 2 wheeler and rolling it home - it would be maybe 3/4 of a mile with that steep hill to go up - would probably take an hour to get it home with a several rest stops.
Wow - I would love all the room, Patti!!
