2010 Garden Photos - Part 5

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I bought 4 solar spots and the Bear looks great at night.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

such a nice thing not to have to run wiring to those sort of items... I put a little solar spot next to the small fountain in the yard.. it's not the brightest but it was cheap

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Mine were cheap too and not as bright as I had hoped but as DD said she didnt want the lights in her bedroom all night. The lights glow just enough.
My spots on-line were 12 bucks. Then I saw them at the Chrismistree shop for 7. Bummer.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

that is a bummer .. this is the one I bought.. the light is yellow though... I was just impressed it stayed lit most of the night.. even in my yard

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Mine stay on depending on how much sun they got that day. The batteries charge unevenly. The lights are supposed to be sensative to dusk and dawn but I think they come on at 8 o'clock and go off when the batteries run out.It doesnt matter ,they are cool. Mine look like regular lights not rocks. Yours are neat.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I didn't plant anything in them... because the wiring is not sealed from where the soil would be... kind of silly

I am trying to get a pic of some bird that come in the yard. They are about the size of a morning dove, they hop and peck in the ground. They are 2 colored on the back brownish, blackish and white kind of stripped. There is a tad of red on the head and a black spot on the throat. When they fly over head they look yellow.

What are they a yellow belly sap sucker? I googled them and they say they tap a tree, these are pecking the ground.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

They are looking for grubs anywhere they can find them.
Its yellowbellied Sapsucker alright. that has fermented they get drunk and flop off and stagger all over .Its a riot.
When they tap into trees that have had sap that has fermented they get drunk and flop off and stagger all over .Its a riot.

I've never seen a yellow bellied sapsucker!

I was thinking of ordering Freckless Violet this week,... just not sure if it'll overwinter.

They cant be that drunk as I cant get close enough to snap them.

luvsgrtdanes, great to see your lilacs and viola. We are a long way from them blooming.

Ge1836, love the now shots and I love your garden spike always. The bear RULES!

More brush cutting going on here. Here are shots made early yesterday. Lots more got done. We own down to that dirt road, but still not sure of the property line. We now have 3 big piles to chip like the one in the picture with my Brooklyn pal who came to help us. I could barely move today, so I have been staking the peonies and potting up some plants, just sort of puttering about. Back to the woods tomorrow and more edging. DH has been putting up 500 feet of rabbit fence yesterday and today. He will be my hero if we finally beat the bunnies. I like seeing them in the yard which is not fenced, but never in the garden. lots of land there patti!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Who know what we will do with it, except selectively clear it. We found some old beach plum bushes and a couple of old crab apple trees. So maybe some fruit trees, except we would have to fence it, so think that is out. Though the lower part is lacking many trees so perhaps we can put in a small fenced garden in that area.

We also have found a lot of road trash, bottles mostly, that workers (cleaning teams, carpenters & lawn people) throw out the window of their trucks/cars on their way to our neighbors homes. We are the first driveway of 4 along this private dirt road, and all of the trash is beyond our drive, so not our crap! It is so annoying. Why do people think it is OK to litter? grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Maybe when they see its not as wild an area as it used to be ,they will keep their stuff for the next wild place.
Maybe not.

South Hamilton, MA

A 'Do Not Litter' sign. It might make them realize that there are people there--so will probably litter somewhere else.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i agree with Joann - i toss apple cores out the window into the woods. never trash though.

the sign should have a large fine if caught message.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

gotta love it... from my Vincent Gardens order that came less than 2 weeks ago

I prefer setting up a fake machine gun.

The duck was lost in the snow for months. He looks much happier now. Everyone's spring blooms look fantastic. It's going to take awhile to get caught up!

A camellia from Fairweather. It took three years to get a bloom, but worth the wait.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

venu209, I would have waited even longer, lovely!

Here is an almost freed found tree today which is way cool and some more cleared space beyond the endless stream. Patti

neat!!!

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I hope the it came from me Jen, that means I'll have some :)

That tree is way, way, WAY cool!!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

I agree about the tree. I just sat on the branches which actually swing in the wind for a long time this afternoon. Tons more to clear, but I am going away for a few days. If the rain holds off, I am hoping to come back to find that my DH and friend have whittled away some more brush and got it all chipped. I actually spent today dividing and transplanting then weeding and edging rather than clearing, as I was too beat up to do that again today.

I took some narcissus shots today. The one called N. 'Wave' is way cool too. Here are a few of the kids. The wind was howling, so they are a little blurry. Patti

Nice shots you all. What a nice bright columbine Jen, very pretty camellia venu certainly worth waiting for, and that is a really cool tree Patti. All your bulbs are looking good too.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Patti That tree is to die for. I cant wait to see how you create plantings around it or just leave it alone.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

Nice daffs Patti. Mine are about done, but the azaleas are ready to explode.
