What's Happening in your neck of the woods? Friends...

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

As I was getting ready to go down to the house the wind was blowing and it was raining a bit. When I went out the door it was snowing. When I came home 2 hour later the back yard looked like this! But the snow had stopped.

It's going to freeze here tonight.. had to bring in my canna seeds.. Nothing has popped up yet but still dont want to take a chance

Betty yes we have been very lucky.. My hubby is crazy about fishing as i am about gardening.. He said the fish are about a month ahead also.. Fish that should be spawning now are have already dropped there eggs for the season.. daffodils everywhere are in full bloom.. I cant believe, it so soon.. We usually cant plant seeds outside until the second even third week in may so were really ahead this year... Still havent planted anything in the ground yet, cause well its APRIL!!!

Had a sprinkle of the white stuff here this morning as well..it`s only 2 degrees..brrrr hard to believe after last weekends weather..

Took Kyle and Noah out for supper last night then to my place..about 9pm (guess I was snoring) Noah said `grandma you are awfully tired, better you should take us home`lol..pretty sad when the kids really are the ones looking after you and not the other way around..

ordered the pane glass for the stained glass look frame that got broken..found a new frame so if it`s nice outside this weekend I`ll sit and play..will teach me not to be in a rush to get things outside..

Jenn I`ve zillions of seeds, so tempted but like you I`ll at least wait until May..will drop in this afternoon though and pick up a shrub..want to pick one up every week..

Bought a Do it Yourself magazine on the way to work this morning..lordy they are not cheap.. $15.99 but has loads of gardening projects one can make..already I`ve seen a few thinks I`d like to try..concrete table for one..

Was in the office early today, staying a few hours after work to finish the clean-up..this week I worked 16 hrs. to bring the office back to a clean, dust free office..now I can enjoy the hrs. I`ve earned..lol..earned every one of them I`d say...

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

betty whats the book called.. I always want to get them but never think there will be anything worth trying inside.. Maybe i'll have to talk a trip to the book store to see it..

Yep like you all we had some snow last night and this morning, nothing stayed however.. Nothing was even frozen in the morning so..

no snow here, but had wonderful Jack Frost designs on the windshield and crunchy grass and white roofs.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Cold and windy here today, snow almost gone around my place.

Went out to get a dog dish holder for fosters to use, otherwise the dish slides around all over the place! Also a Clucosamine Hcl/MSM/Chon. liquid combo which the dogs get. A friend recommended adding Turmeric to Breakers diet to help with what appears to be arthritis in back legs. Haven't got that one yet.

Took Breaker with me. He prefers to get into the front seat and won't sit down which is rather dangerous so I have a crate on the front seat and a friend lent me an ingeneous leash which folds up short and has a snap which slides into the seat belt latch. Works a charm so we went to another dog store to get one of those. Had to get a hot pink one- it was the only 3' leash, others were 6' which I don't want.Like this better than putting a harness style on him.I will just leave it hooked up in the car to use with any dog.

Busy weekend coming up with the Garden Show. Tomorrow I work in the Peony Society booth and Sunday in the Society Membership booth.

Last night I went to the house to tour a private dinner party. Nice group - a fellow treating a group of colleagues/ to dinner, turned out one of the ladies was from a now defunct garden club of which I was a member. I was greeting at the door ( in costume) and she walked in and called me by name and of course I could not remember who she was! They were a nice group - an easy way to earn a few extra $ even with the snowstorm.

Wanted to get outside today and work on that little flower shed but brrrrr sun wind is blowing and just too cold for this old gal!

Made a run into town, back by noon now settling in to a few ongoing projects where it's warm...perhaps tomorrow I'll be able to play outside..

Got a wooden frame, glass cut and going to see what I can selvage from the other glass piece that got broken, think if I put a few pieces here and there on glass I won't find it so overwhelming...

Was nice Carol that you met up with garden friends..don't you just hate it when someone seems to know you so well i.e. name and you can't place them or their names...yikes, not good! You do keep a busy schedule that's for sure...

Let's hope the snow is behind us...

"M" thinking of you!!!

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

Its defiantly warmer here today.. Not 70 but i think its in the low 60's.. Suns out but so is the wind.. At least i could put out my canna seeds in the sunshine.. We had frost last night hubby went fishing this morning with 2" of ice inside his boat..

betty good luck on the glass..

Oh phooey! I had a post all written, previewed it since it contained a link and then closed the wrong tab. I wonder what I can remember.

I'm just checking in briefly before heading out to the first of two Ottawa Symphony rehearsals. Concert tomorrow with another rehearsal at noon tomorrow. So, today is inside the National Arts Centre all day. If we happen to finish early enough, I'll go to the end of a rehearsal with the other orchestra which rehearses every Sunday evening.

Great column in the Ottawa Citizen today about the abuse of the English language - in particular, the misuse of the nominative case instead of the objective in the plural following a preposition. It's my pet peeve of mistakes in the English language.
http://www.ottawacitizen.com/columnists/Language+demons+again/2788648/story.html

We head out to Vancouver for a few days early on Tuesday morning with a brief stopover in Calgary - the consequence of dirt-cheap sale tickets. Head back to Ottawa, arriving in the wee hours on Sunday morning as I have a dress rehearsal for that other orchestra on Sunday evening.

Have a great day.

Ann

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I suppose your stopover in Calgary is just a quick plane change?

Victoria, BC(Zone 8b)

Has anyone else had to sign in each time they come to DG's? For the past 6 years, I stay logged in and just go straight to the Canadian forum. I noticed too that there is a lot of advertising... I"m a wee bit irritated by these 2 items, and have sent a d-mail to admin telling them just what I thought about the changes. It probably doesn't help I've been a bit under the weather this past week, even poor Cooper got yelled at. He's so forgiving, what's that saying... 'a house isn't a home unless there's a dog in it? or something to that effect.

Linda

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Linda - I've not had any problem with having to sign in each time, nor am I seeing a lot of ads. Maybe your settings (cookies) in your browser have been changed so that your computer won't keep you signed in. I've had that happen once or twice with newly downloaded updates to Firefox.

Carol, we actually have a couple of hours in Calgary, assuming we are on time, of course. Not sure just what time - I think morning as I think the flight out is sometime around 12:15.

Am in from two consecutive OSO rehearsals but the rehearsal for tomorrow has been cancelled. That's good and I'll have an uninterrupted slot of time to practice a few spots. We are doing an evening of Polish music and the longest work is the Gorecki Symphony of Sorrowful Songs. This is a work that has dead easy notes to play but goes on for almost an hour with NO rests in the music. Very, very difficult to hold the instrument up and keep playing constantly for that length of time. http://www.elsewhere.co.nz/culturalelsewhere/1816/henryk-goreckis-sorrowful-symphony-capturing-the-spirit-of-the-age-and-marketing/

We are also doing the Lutoslawski, Concerto for Orchestra and a shorter work by Polish-Canadian composer Peter Paul Koprowski, Elegia. With the plane crash yesterday, it's remarkable timing for a program like this. The Polish Embassy has asked us to start with a moment of silence at the concert.

Ann you are one lucky lady to be able to do so much travelling, sure wish you could pack me in your suitcase!Such an exciting life...

With the wind and cool temps. I didn't even go out of the house yesterday, stayed in and played, was relaxing until I started to get calls from family and friends going through terrible difficulties and illnesses..seems even though you lock yourself up inside, depressive news can still find you.

Jenn, sorry to hear you aren't well. Don't you think much has to do with the extreme weather variables, one day we can wear shorts the next our snowmobile suits?

I'm sure though Mother Natures has been working her majic..first warm day I'll have to tour the gardens..

What did I accomplish this weekend? Another afghan finished, glass insert for the back deck hanger, letting it cure before grouting..tonight I'll stain the new frame and trim..wen't easier than I thought! All the blocks for another rag quilt are ready to put together so that is a plus..should have finished the other pocket bag which is 80% done and sitting on the work table..my goal is to finish it tonight so all and all I'm moving forward..more Christmas gifts done..tell you, want to be done by at least Aug/Sept. - think I just might make it.

Paul (BIL /boss) is back from vacation today, that's usually a high stress day...not sure he'll notice what I did in 16 hrs. of cleaning but I'll be sure to tell him!

"M" I'm sure Lorna will make the team..won't it be exciting, prior to her illness has she shown interest in sports?

Well it's that time of morning better get on a move, animals to feed, breakfast to be had and off I go....

Be sure to dress warm everyone..brrr it's a chilly morning..

Morning all ..

Linda, I am always signed into Daves .. not sure what the problem might be with .. as Ann mentioned it could be something set incorrectly in your settings/preferences or cookies.

Betty, Lorna has always been active, which is why she went to Humber for her degree in Landscape Design. She operates and repairs all kinds of garden equipment and was commonly on her (or hands and knees) 18 hours of a day .. so .. being unable to do that, the Sledge Hockey is another option. Unfortunately, it was just a trial run .. mind you, there were approx 25 people who did show up to try .. but many of those were young people, as in children .. but .. it was a start.

Ann .. enjoy your trip. Just had relatives fly back to Summerland BC

Lots of physio appts this week, plus I think we are starting at a gym .. I'm allowed free access as I am Lorna's assistant, but, I can also use the machines if I want to .. something tells me I has best start doing that with CARE !!!

A Robin is again singing away outside .. guess he's looking for a mate ^_^

Stay well everyone .. hope you can tolerate the cold Jenn ..

Ann - what day are you arriving in Calgary? I live about 10 minutes from the airport!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Snowing again here and apparently off and on the next few days. Weekend was sunny but cold and windy. Garden Show was great, I worked at Peony Society booth on Sat and Hort membership booth on Sunday. Bought a lot of Amazoniron plant supports ( planned!) , a bunch of pussy willows, and at the last minute when the Landscapers garden displays start to sell of their product a lovely azalea for $10.00

Betty your piece is sunning..
Yes i'm sure it has everything to do with the weather.. Theres a few girls at work too, so could even be from them..
Todays a nice day here, hopefully I'll get up to going outside today.. Its starting to break up so maybe i could spend a bit in the sun

Carol, great buys..did you happen to paint those lovely animal rocks? aren't they grand..

I'ts 6 here, sun is out, can see the trees swaying so imagine the wind is up. Almost time for lunch, was going to walk to the restaurant but think it's still a 'ride in the car' kind of day..I get earaches far too easily to e out in the wind..

Lorna sure looks as though she's a pro..lordy she's got fortitude to make the best of it..

Jen, hope your cold is all but over..as for the glass piece, I'll grout tonight that is if I still have energy left..

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

No I bought the rock with the flowers on it and there are two cat rocks given to me by brother and wife. Here's a better look at them.

Carol - it's tomorrow, but I'm not so sure we'd have time to meet. DH has lounge privileges and I think we will be trying to find some lunch there (even though it's only 10 am your time when we arrive). And coming out of the secure area would guarantee we'd have to do security again. (I'm travelling with a viola too, which complicates things a bit). I'll ask DH what he thinks though.

Ann

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I am quite a way from the airport - would not even make it out there that time of day.
Susan is the one who is closer. But yes it would probably be a nuisance having to come out of security and in again and if you only have two hours which seems quite a while by the time you disembark and reembark there is not so much time.

Wave as you go by -most of the planes go over my house after take off just so Bailey can bark at them!

Ottawa, ON(Zone 5a)

Oops, forgot to whom I was replying. Sorry.

Victoria Harbour, ON

Love the rocks..I did purchase about 4 books on painting rocks, don't think I ever opened them..each time I see them painted I think I'd best get at it..will have to go in search of them tonight..tks for the photo

cullman, AL(Zone 7b)

Those rocks are great, imagine them on a big bolder, what a great look to a garden..

I finally go out for a bit today, just sat on the steps.. I did get to check my canna seeds, no seedlings yet but i can see roots starting.. Always a great sign..

Temps wont go below freezing all week, not even at night... Were so tempted, i want to garden... However something in the back of my mind keeps telling me ""its only april"".. I think the first week of may we will give it a go.. Thats about 3 weeks early here, but if by then still no freezing i would think we would be ok...

**Just checked now and one of my Erebus Canna seeds broke through the soil today, boy does that make me happy to see..

Morning, stepped outside to smell fresh air..brisk wind, it's early and am sure it will warm up..got to burn the last of the leaves and branches last night, thank goodness clean up is complete..
I should have taken photo's last night of the growth as I just can't believe in 2 short weeks how the trees and shrubs have opened their buds..won't be long and I'll have a few tulips..oh happy days..

Looked at the reclaimed wood sitting there just yearning to become a garden flower shed so I guess if weather co-operates that will be my weekend project!

This morning with everything done in the house I'm off to grout my stained glass window .. with any luck I can hang it this weekend..

"M" you just don't see young students anymore coming to the door asking if you have odd jobs so they can make $$$...guess parents give it to them without their having to work for it..glad you are able to take advantage of the program

Kyle gets the wires in his finger out today or Thursday, they were waiting for a call from Collingwood Hospital..kids sure do heal quickly..said he will have a nap so guess that means they put him out for the procedure..

Best I get going or I won't get my grouting done..lol
Gab later this morning and will start a new thread!
