Marilyn - sorry for your loss....
otherwise - Happy Easter Everyone!!!!!!!!!!
What's Happening in your neck of the woods? Friends...
Marilyn - I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Puts a damper on an otherwise lovely day.
So sorry to hear about your BIL's passing "M", prayers for you and yours..
Started out this morning in rain, lunch time and sky is blue as can be but the wind is up..lordy on Saturday night the wind was strong enough upset 1/2 of what I had put out so Sunday morning back out I went..did get some sun, starting to tan early this year...
Hope you all enjoyed your Easter and that sunshine kissed your cheek...
With spending 3 days with family enjoying each others company got to tell you, couldn't get better than that...
Perhaps it did..
I want to make one of these, at my brother's on Friday mentioned it to friends of his...was out Sat. and came home and found all reclaimed lumber and metal for what???? yep, a garden shed (outhouse type design)...not sure I'll have time to make it this week coming but sure am going to try...
Thanks for the condolences one and all .. as you can imagine, busy times here .. finding paperwork from the 80s .. going to the funeral home .. not too bad though.
Looks like a viewing on Wed with funeral on Thursday
WINDY .. holy cow !!!!!!!! Could hardly keep my car on the road today .. sand was blowing all over the place in parking lots .. came home to chairs flipped over and my sheets wound SNUGGLY around the clothesline !!
Really do think that little garden shed is OUTSTANDING Betty .. good luck with the project ^_^
Easter, altho subdued, was nice here .. the turkey turned out fantastic .. I 'usually' never have a problem cooking a turkey .. but .. ONCE a few years back .. I cooked one for Xmas that I swear must have FLOWN here from California .. lawsie it was a tough beggar .. and now .. everytime I cook one .. that ONE time floats through my head .. hmmmmmm .. Post Traumatic Stress I guess LoL
Take care all .. batten down the hatches down east .. the northwest is sending you some WIND !!!!
~M~
Morning...
Spring showers, heavy rain at times and just like you "M" high winds...knocked over the big stained glass piece I had to hand on back deck...have to redo I guess...could have cried...oh well, my fault for being too anxious and getting all outside...
"M" hard finding paperwork from that far back, although we all seem to think we've things in order there is always more requested by gmt. and funeral home that we didn't contend with.. had he been deathly ill for some time?
Made a bargain with Paul, cleaning the office for spring in lieu of time off on the 23rd. so I can go to the big craft show in Buffalo...rather than go in on Saturday or Sunday I've opted to go in an hour earlier, stay later and get it done, up anyway, might as well make use of my morning time...
Should have asked for the day off rather than negotiate...lol...
Off and running
waving to all of you...looking forward to photo's of you gardens as I'm sure they are also growing in leaps and bounds...
Hello all
It was a nice weekend here although I did not spend muchtim outside.
Have been helping the trial crew from the agility club I used to run with their trial set up - computor problems and they still have not got anybody trained to run the trials - after 4 years!
Worked at the house on Sunday, restaurant was busy but only did one tour.
Some garden friends visited on Saturday and we shared some seeds and plants.
Yesterday took foster dog Breaker back over to the Humane Society for his dental today,- he did not want to go with them - this afternoon will take the other foster, Paisley over and pick up Breaker.
Still no enquiries to adopt him. Too bad - he really is a nice fellow.
A friend asked me to find a plant for her that had the name
'Dancing....." - in memory of her 3 year old pup who recently died of cancer , a very sudden and rapid progress. I found several hostas and she wants to order but cant figure out the on line order form so she will stop by today and get her hostas ordered. ( she has dyslexia- but I will make her do it herself when she is here with my coaching)
My garden helper is coming this morning to finish the rough clean of the front flower beds. It is nice to have the help but a bit of me says I am sorry not to be down diggin in the dirt!
Carol, can understand your wanting to be the one to do the major spring cleanup of the garden beds, felt the same but then when I did get outside I was so pleased not to have to do it...could play with the plants/shrubs themselves...
Where do you have Breaker listed for adoption? do you have such things as Marketeer? paper that you can list for FREE any item you want or sale/trade that you could put his info on??? glad I don't live closer because I'm sure he'd come home with me...Sailor (Border Collie) is sure showing signs of her bad hip of late..had her on a diet but I think someone somewhere is giving her treats, no way could she put that much weight on again unless someone is treating her...
As for seeds, am sure your friend will be thrilled with her seeds...I've got about 30 pkgs other than the ziplock bags I've saved my own seeds in..will wait for danger of frost to end and then I'll just scatter, what grows will grow...
Did you get to wear your new blouse Carol?
Our dogs are listed on our own website and on website called Petfinder( which absolutely everybody uses i.e. rescue, and Humane Societies)
www.albertasheltierescue.ca
and
www.albertasheltierescue.petfinder.com
We never use any other type of site although we do periodically place an ad on Kijiji to say we have dogs available or we can help people who have dogs they dont want/cant keep any more.
Really annoys me when people give or try to give my dogs treats without asking permission.
Yes I am wearing my new blouse- keep forgetting to get a picture. It is very nice but will probably be pretty warm in the summer.
Hort Society Garden Show 2 days this weekend out at Spruce Meadows. I am working in the Peony Society booth on Sat and the Hort Society memberhsip booth on Sunday. And of course shopping too! Check out this website for some of the things I plan to buy: ( flop bars and flat spirals)
www.amazoniron.com
OMG Carol, thank goodness I don't live nearby..I sooo love the spiral that is in color on front page...of course, all of them could come home with me but that one in particular has tickled my fancy....
Yup thats part of what I am going to get - 3 large flat spirals, going to try them with the peonies, a bit different from what I usually do for support.
Interesting. Are they decorative or functional too?
I dont think i would use them for plants I would just have it as decor in the garden.. I love the look of them so different.. jen
Ann both!
so at 7:00pm today our weather was 77 degrees... Its just killing me not to start planting everything now.. but theres always the change it will get cold again :(
jen
Carol - I'm so glad you posted about Amazon Iron - I'd never heard of them before!
I'll have to see if we get a house this summer, then I can go see them. Not going to buy anything more until we move LOL
Thanks again ^_^
Susan about the only place you will really see their product is at the Garden Show.
I think some of the greenhouses sell also and landscapers use them but I dont think they do any direct sales.
I know what I'll be doing this weekend, and it won't be going to the Garden Show, much as I'd like to...........
I've seen those hoops, I thought they were in the Lee Valley catalog but I couldn't find them.
I absolutely love garden art..most of what I have is aged iron - rusty..each year I add to it.... wish I lived closer..think what interested me most was the photo of them sitting in the yard with snow toppled on them, looked so creative..
It's been raining everyday but early morning and then the sun comes out..looked at the weather update, rain all week, Sat & Sun overcast with a high of 13...still nice though..
Carol, I'm sooo praying that my peonies do ok this year..I keep planting but never do they grow...boo hoo..
As for my arrangement with Paul, I've 5 1/2 hrs. saved, going to be more work than I thought..so April 23rd. is booked and I'll shuffle off to Buffalo once again..seems I'm there about once a month...big USA craft show in Hamburg..love to see what's new and am always sure of coming home with something...
did some boo hoo'ing..on the weekend the boys helped me take down back deck enclosure, take out lawn furniture..I took out my stained glass window to hang from back deck, was windy, thought I'd do it later...oh/oh wind must have got it...now I've more work to do...
Oh NO, Betty. so sorry to see that.
Betty what is the problem with your peonies?
Hey there is a peony forum here - better post over there.
THEY just don't like me...I've tried since gardening bug hit me to grow them, I associate them with my grandma who raised me, she had such lovelies, I've tried to find ants..lol..sand/good earth/bad earth...sunshine, shade, semi shade....you name it and nope no go..
Betty that looked like so much work.. I would still be crying.. Is that carpet and indoor out door rug?? I love it the black and white with the red stunning..
I love peonies, I just cant grow them either.. I bought 3 roots last year and nothing came up.. Brought them home planted them in the ground the same day, and nothing.. They weren't that cheap either, i think they were 10-12 dollars a root.. When nothing is coming up from that, makes you not want to shell out the money again...
Maybe I'll try again this year, but with only one root..
jen
Re the peonies - are you planting them too deep? You do know dont you that the peony eyes should not be more than 2 inches below the surface?
10-12 $ is actually way less than I pay! but I buy named varieties from peony specialists.
Other than planting to deep I cant think of any reason why peonies would not grow and flower in Canada - we have the long cld winters they need.
Jen where did you buy the roots, what time of year and how many eyes did they have? Were they bare root?
well i've seen the same ones later for $6 they were just the everywhere dark pink ones cant remember the name flex or something
Home depot, it was may maybe june.. I want to say there was 3 or 4 eyes on each root.. Didn't plant to deep they had instructions i followed to a tee.. they were bare root with some oh peatmoss or dirt (cant remember) tossed in the bag
jen
nope come to think of it i think it was april or early may.. its when we were buying our evergreen type plants and thats what comes out first.. I planted them in my side garden cause the new garden we dug the end of may wasn't there yet
Think I'll give it one more try...I'll pick up a few and plant them as you say, perhaps that's it, might be too deep...never give up right? Suzanne SIL that I work with has some beauties, always admire them..ahhh to dream...
Jen, I paint backside of linoleum for floormats...that one was painted I'd say about 5 years ago..last forever...make them to match the rooms or areas they are in...
Last year bought cushions and placemats for cafe set on front deck...DIL on Sunday noticed that it matched the cushions, only took her 1 year to notice..lol
Betty if you have roots in the ground dig them up and have a look at them.
Jen rather odd to be selling bare root in the spring- did they look healthy?
Usually the ones the garden centres sell in the spring are potted up, already well sprouted- several stems 6-12 inches high.
Wonder if they had been sitting around all winter and thats why they were so cheap?
I dont really know what healthy would look like.. i never really looked at them before.. Could be knowing home depot, they were probably there for a while
Betty what do you paint it with?? acrylic paint like craft paint?? Do you have to use some kind of primer??
jen
Hiya ..
Been lurking about as I have had NO time to post.
Love my peonies .. they are AGES old .. smell awesome .. but .. even though the ANTS are needed .. my bouquets stay OUTSIDE.
Sunny but cool here .. windy today it seems .. time has been almost overloaded with family stuff, B in L funeral is today, perhaps things will settle a bit following that ..
Betty, I almost cried when I saw that broken window ..
Take care
~M~
I guess I'll have to start posting now. I've been lurking for some time like listening in on a party line. There isn't much to report in my life.Everything is so self centered. Is this what old age causes. My world is so much smaller now. Today it's hair day, tomorrow hearing test!!
My grandson has been asked to read a poem at the Vimy Ridge memorial service. His late great grandfather used to recite it every year.My son took his two children to the reopening of the Vimy Ridge monument in France. GGF fought at Vimy.I would love to attend but can't JOY
No more lurking JOY, listen to us, even the most mundane things that I do on a daily basis I post, makes you feel as though you are not so alone..I never get lonesome as I once did on weekends why??? because there is always someone to chat with at the touch of the keyboard...getting your hair done is exciting..Tuesday I was at a point you know where you'll go home and cut it yourself it you don't get it done..was able at lunch to have someone cut it who works in Walmart hair center...so that's important..have you been having hearing difficulties or is it precautionary? What an honor to be asked to recite the poem..does your son have a cam recorder he could tape it for you?
"M" thinking of you this morning..prayers to you and yours...hard times for sure...will you be having a lot of the people from the funeral at your home afterwards? Oooh can just picture a bouquet of peonies on the back deck table...guess the only other option is to travel in the dark and cut from 3 or 4 people who have large plants in bloom....hmmmm..yikes, what do they do with plant thiefs...remember when I was making cement rhubbarb leaves a few years ago and we ran out of leaves, I was teaching a friend, he's an O.P.P. and we went to someones door who had massive gardens on the side of their house, knocked, note on the door said they'd be fishing and camping for a few weeks..ooohhh cut some rhubbarb..nothing like thieving with a police officer is there?
Jenn, I seal the backside with a sealer..actually the same product that I give it 8 - 10 coats with when done, I do it 1/2 product and 1/2 water..if I'm doing a large mat which is 6' x 8' that I buy at home depot for about $39.99 I give a coat or 2 with regular house paint then work with my acrylics...somewhere I have the directions on-line because a few people wanted to make them..will have to search where and post thread link..
Carol, do you think I should buy roots versus the peony 8" potted plant??
Oh/Oh calling for snow tomorrow morning..won't stay though I'm sure for any length of time!
I am taking mom and step-dad Jim to Buffalo on the 23rd. - boss doesn't like to give Friday's off because then all the staff want Friday off so when he was in a good mood last week, leaving for the Islands, lol, what better time to make a deal...no cleaner in this office, we normally clean our own little neck of the woods but lordy, everything needed dusting, washing etc. so I said I'd do it on non-work hours in lieu of Friday April 23rd. and he went for it..originally I said I'd come in on a Sat. or Sun. and do it and then with getting up so early every day thought why not come in an hour early every day..I've done that, even took 8 sets of blinds home to wash in tub and all garbage containers...I'm over my 6 hours, probably will have another 4 before office is back into shape..I'll keep them for another run across the border..lol..
On the 23rd and 24th Hamburg N.Y. has a large spring craft show..can't wait to go and get ideas and purchase a few things...Christmas is right around the corner you know..slap me silly...I'm thrilled with myself because I'm almost done....been a busy girl!!!
well, better go eat my breakfast then can watch a movie and crochet as the office phones are quiet this week..getting losts of crafting done...
Hope you all enjoy your day..raining here, hope you've sunshine in your neck of the woods...
Gab later
Betty I mostly only order roots - that is the best way to plant them in the fall ( thats when growers ship)
I do watch in the local garden stores lately because they bring in ITOH hybrids which start expensive and eventually drop the prices over the summer. I know somebody who bought 10 ITOH hybrids for $10 each in September ( and gave me 2 of them!) -usually $70-80. I bought one a couple years ago because it was half price.I am informed by a peony expert that these plants are tissue culture rather than roots that have been split and potted up and grown on for sale . She says they are pretty good
but the roots are much smaller, fewer eyes.. The one I bought had 2-3 small stems last year, waiting to see what happens this year. The ITOH hybrids are beautiful but if you buy them from a specialist grower they are generally over $100 or more! (ITOH hybrids are cross between herbacious and tree peony)
Going for my hair cut today - my hairdresser had a knew replacement early Feb and I never checked to see if she was back yet Hair is getting pretty long!
Working a private party at LH this evening. Short hair will look a bit odd but still! Wish I could find a nice wig 1900 style! Hair piece won't work because of my hair color.
Wishing I had not thrown out the real hair piece I had made in about 1968, could have had it dyed to match my current color!
That's very interesting Carol..I'll keep an eye out on roots..noticed at the Garden Center they had little boxes with a root, I always stay away from those because to me they look as though they are 'dead' and yet you say they might have a better chance of surviving..I'll be on the look-out!
So LH rents their facility? Guess it must be something like our Toronto CasaLoma..people rent it for weddings..you`d have to be a millionaire in order to do that though..
I so enjoy touring it..been a few years..should ask the grandchildren if they`ve been if not take them one Saturday..
Getting together tonight with Kyle and Noah, doing our grandma thing..I`ll take them out for supper and I`m sure they`ll find something they want to purchase in the mall while I make a stop to Fabricland..lol...
Raining heavy here, dark skies but I can see the tree leaves out on trees across the road...ohhh spring is here, surely is..
Fancy Nope none of my roots looked like that they were not that big.. nor was there sticks sticking out like those..Could of just been bad roots
Betty.. thanks I might just try this, we need a new mat as our other one was that weaved plastic and it was all falling apart after 1 season..
Another gloomy rainy day here.. its rained for the past 3 days now.. Hopefully more stuff starts to grow.. My hosta's broke ground yesterday.. Hubby is also thinking its time to cute the lawn.. Mostly every tree is budding now.. The crab apple tree behind us is loaded with flowers, so pretty to see...
jen
Jen you are so much ahead of us..I'll have to check out the gardens as it's rained here since Monday and some must be up..as for the flowering crab trees, I've about 8 - no leaves yet let alone flowers but my lilac's are starting to have open leaves..
Betty personally I would order from a reputable peony grower and get the roots in the fall to plant - best possible time.
Yes LH rents big time - that is a major source of income for them. It is agreat place for small weddings!

I'll be patient and wait..perhaps the ones I planted last year will surprise me...
When you say small weddings, how many could it accommodate...is it for the wedding service only or does it have a kitchen facilty and/or group that caters?
