Greenshed Party

(Judi)Portland, OR

I like backpacks.

Willow, you are putting that greenshed to good use! I'm so happy for you!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Okay. After only 7 days I have green showing on most of the seeds. The Impatients aren't showing yet but the lobelias are all showing and the coleus also. Some of the marigolds are showing. I'm so happy!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Not only is the greenshed pretty, IT WORKS!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

To any of you who got plants from me at the greenshed, don't be surprised if you start to find tomato babies -I used some of my compost to pot things up for the party and for a few things around here as well and I'm getting baby tomatoes all over. They're most likely sweet million cherry/grape or grocery cluster-type tomatoes. Could be an orange mediium sized one, yellow pear, or even a brandywine cross, though.

However, before you start worrying about weeds, I want to reassure you that I'm pretty careful to send most stuff that's seeding (and almost all weeds except grass) to the city to deal with in my clean green. I know my compost doesn't get hot enough to kill everything. I didn't even compost the actual tomato plants last year. :)

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Bummer - I haven't yet seen any seedlings, but I'll be on the lookout out now. Sweet Million - yum!

Rose Lodge, OR(Zone 8b)

Yeah, where are MY weedlings?

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Weedlings.... Hee Hee ^_^ Good one!

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

weedlings, lol. I like that too. I can save a couple for you, Summer. They have to get thinned out of the lily pot soon :)

I received a start of a hardy impatiens that day, maybe from Susybell???. It is ready to go out into the ground now. What shall I do with it?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Yes, I brought the impatiens omeiana. :) It likes moist soil and at least partial shade. It can take some sun, doesn't like complete dark. It stays shorter in more sun and will get taller if it wants more light. It will survive in dryer soil but it won't be too happy about it-it needs frequent watering and gets veeeery droopy when too dry-not pretty! However, it's proven to be very tough and will resprout from small stubs of root. So I think it can spread if happy. One more thing-in fall it has yellow to yellow-orange blooms-they aresort of tube-like blooms, not like the annual ones. Hope that will help you decide on a good home. :)

Thanks for the quick response, Susybell. One more, and very important in my yard, question....how well do slugs like it?

Seattle, WA

I think I ended up with a few of those hardy impatiens starts as well, and I just plunked them in the ground that weekend. Maybe I shouldn't have but they seem to be doing just fine in their moist shade - and no slug damage so far on mine. So I'm thinking they are pretty resistant.

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

I've found some leaves with chomps out of them from time to time but they've never been decimated like some things are. I don't use chemicals, so they're substantially on their own for surviving.

(Linda)Gig Harbor, WA(Zone 8a)

Suzybelle- got some of your impatiens omeiana and I can't wait to see it do it's thing, thank you!! I have them near my fountain that I am always flushing out but they are just sitting there could they just be too wet or maybe need more sun?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Hmm, I think I'd give it more time. I wouldn't be surprised if it's building up the root system. They were newly dug and divided, some didn't have a lot of roots yet. One of mine is growing under a hosta, peeking out to one side of it and not getting a lot of sun and it seems really happy there. Another little piece I moved last fall sat for a long time and is finally growing this spring. If it really never does anything I can give you another one at some get together, or send one along somehow. :)

Thank you Suzybell...sounds like patience is the key here. I love the foliage on these little plants!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Susyb when are you coming to Hawthorne?

Vancouver, WA(Zone 8a)

Judi, looks like it'll be after the weekend. I haven't been very productive this week. :(

Cool - let me know!

Seattle, WA

I no longer remember who gave me the bunny tail grass, but I'm totally in love with it. The grass itself is so soft, and all of sudden, when I wasn't looking it made bunny tails!! So please tell me this will reseed itself. I think I read that it is an annual, or not hardy here - but I'm assuming if someone was giving away divisions that it seeds around.

I hope so anyway, does anyone know?

I think it was from Lynn. I could have kicked myself for not asking for some, so I bought some seed. I haven't started it yet, though.

Seems like it doesn't tend to reseed . . .

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Those were from seeds that someone sent to me from their garden. Mine are starting to bloom now, too. Aren't they cute little guys?

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I bought some of this at the florist for the arrangements for Rachel's baby shower. I fell in love with them! I'll have to look to see if I have any seeds. Too bad they don't reseed! Typical that the one grass you'd like to reseed does not.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

But the seeds aren't expensive or hard to find. And it does sound like you can direct sow them . . .
