Cost effective vegetable gardening?

I did that with my cabbage this year, but they bolted instead of making little cabbages. It's sure not anywhere near hot here yet, but there must some sort of timing trick that it only works earlier in the season. (I've done it before, I know it works, but it's been a while and I can't remember any details.)

Linda please don't take my word for it but I think the leaf mold should be great for your taters, I wish I had some, but I actually was thinking of driving to one of the parks tomorrow and grabing lots of leaves so I could fill my potato bags as well, they are just getting a little too tall. By the way is it O.K to bury some of the potato leaves underneath the leaves as well? I am just wondering.

The cabbage idea I just got from a book, I like to read organic gardening books when my little ones let me, I have learned all kinds of tricks of the trade, but I have never tried doing this myself, I don't think it would hurt to try with a couple to see what happens.

Thanks, guys. Gotta go 2 plan B cause there wasn't as much leaf mold as usual, and what was there had been cat-pooped... Have 2 retrieve the garbage bags from out back.

P.S. I snapped the tip on a vine while trying 2 fill a container. I stuck it into the mix and hilled around it. We'll see what happens.

I am so glad to hear this because we had tons of leaves that we saved to blanket the fig trees. But my potatoes haven't arrived from Pinetree yet; I'll have to check on that. It went down to 28º last night, so maybe it's just as well.

Gymgirl, I am awe of your cabbages. I have only twice been able to make them head. Both of those cabbages were not nearly as big as yours in the picture. It always seems to bolt in our early Summers in the CV. Even letting them grow over the Winter doesn't seem to help.

I am going to start another thread to continue this disccusion. This one is becoming too long.
