Yes I am! : ) It is a pretty nice day outside today, tomorrow is supposed to be even nicer! 50 and sunny - supposedly no wind, hopefully that's true because if it's windy it just doesn't seem to matter that the temp. is nice. We have a lot of pine cones and branches to clean up so it should be a perfect weekend for that. We had that awful wind that took a lot of trees down and left a lot of people in town with out power for 4 days. Thankfully this time we weren't among them, although they did go on and off for a few minutes. I knew why when I drove down the road the next day and saw one of my neighbors had the top 20 ft of a pine tree on his roof! There were trees all around town down blocking roads and some of them were huge trees that had been up rooted. I remember having a hurricane around here that didn't cause that much damage. They said the wind speeds were about 4 mph shy but there must have been micro bursts because I think there were more trees down than from last winters ice storm.
I have no idea were that all came from lol I wante dto say that I have a nuch of bulb foliage popping up and lots of stuff looking like it's already coming out of dormancy. Like the Autumn Joy already have the new little green buds at the base. I hope those plants know something I don't... early spring! Wishfully thinking anyway. : )
What Have You Ordered 2010 #4
Glad that you had power. Our town took a hit, we had no power for 3 days. A neighboring street had a pole down & when they replaced it, the pole was a different demention & they broke the power line. Ugh!
Glad you got your power back. Lots of wind here, but no loss of power.
I got a big box of bare root roses today. I will have to get up very early to pot them up for growing them out in the greenhouse. They look good as they did last year from S&W in Tn. I guess the season has started. Patti

Wow - planting time already!
Supposed to be warm tomorrow & should go out & prune Pegasus & Pat Austin. Not to order any new this yr.
not sure if anyone is interested but Brinda gets 10 people and buys from NC farms.. they all split the coleus order.. she buys 10 types... and everyone gets 10 cuttings of each one they pick... think she has a couple of spots open still... so if any of you want to get involved
Allison, did she post about it? I may be interested if she is still looking for people.
she dmailed me... but I know she needs a few more.. and I know I am surrounded by coleus lovers!!!
:)
OK, I quess I will send her a dmail. I'd like to give it a try. Thanks.
We'll be expecting lots of rose & coleus photos, folks! I only ordered 1 rose this year, & that's Night Owl---someone posted a pic of it last summer, & it caught my eye.
Have seen that one in a catalog not too many dark purple roses around. Perhaps hybrid tea, but they can be tender here, so can try others. However, our motto: if sun is present plant an iris in that spot. smaller than JMs.
Victor, I've started hibiscus from cuttings (broken new growth) and it works great every time. They get big in a couple seasons. I started it when I accidently broke off a shoot in the spring. Just pushed it into the ground, and got a new plant. I've given 3 sisters some, and have 2 myself from one original plant.
Cool! Thanks, Deb. How are you? Haven't seen you post in a while.
We just got back from a ski trip to Tahoe, it was really gorgeous.
We skied at Heavenly, Squaw Valley and Northstar. There was a snow storm at Squaw, so we could only see about 100 feet in front of us, so didn't see the lake from there. It was the worst weather when we went to the most difficult resort.
I'll post some pictures as soon as I get them downloaded.
Wow - nice!
can't wait!!
NICE! Can't wait for the pics.
I had a friend in Ca who grew up near Lake Tahoe, he said he hated the summers there because of algae bloom, it stunk up the whole area. (lol) I just couldn't imagine such a beautiful place being stinky! lol! I've seen it from a distance, but never stayed there... looking forwards to seeing the pics!! ☺
Received 2 catalogs today one from David Austin Roses and one from Schriener's Irises. Wow!! talk about DROOLING!!!
got that david austin catalog too.
I've got 3 roses from David Austin... 2 more coming this spring.
they do look great - for me i will stay with the knock out roses that do not need a lot of care.
Belive it or not I've found the English roses to be relatively care free compared to my tea roses, very comparable to my Floribundas, except a lot more petals. lol!
i've lost so many rose bushes i just try not to take chances - the catalog is nice - any in particular that are fav's?
So far mine are, Golden Celebration, Scentimental ( A floribunda) & Crown princess Margarita, I'm trying a couple of new ones this spring, (L D Braithwaite and another... can't think of the name at the moment...) for years I used to order from Jackson Perkins but they have gotten really undependable ever since they were sold to another company. I have drip lines to my roses so they get plenty of water and this part of LI has very little damage from Jap Beatles so that helps.
I put in one David Austin Rose last year. I didn't protect any of my roses and I was out yesterday looking to see if they look like they've survived. The David Austin Rose has mostly green leaves and stems still. The top of it has some dead but it looks the best out of all of them! They are supposed to be very hardy here Wha. : ) Mine is Christopher Marlowe, I love the color but I can't say it is a fave because I haven't had it long enough and I don't have any other Austins.. yet ;)
Check the Austin catalog for instructions, they should be pruned in March. check out the ones which are listed as 'own root' as opposed to grafted, although I have one of each. Not much sun for placement here.
I have a love hate relationship with roses here. That DA rose book is a temptation on a large scale. They are all grafted roses in the catalog so be sure to keep that in mind when choosing and planting directly from DA. I have ordered DA roses from sources that have own root plants. I do not spray any chems so the bugs and fungal diseases are a challenge. Any rose that stays here after 3 years must be able to fend for itself and look half way decent more often than not. I also want the fluffy fragrant ones so that adds to the dilemma. 'Christopher Marlowe' is a decent one I agreee. 'The Shepherdess' is another. Short climber 'Crown Princess Margareta' I also agree is decent with lovely blooms. They all get blackspot a little but can be controlled and do regrow foliage quickly. Golden Celebration I am sad to say is going away this year because it is just naked almost all season do to bs leaf drop. The blooms are absolutely gorgeous and fragrant but I can't stand the overall look of the plant here. Roses that do well one place may not preform the same in another climate or locale and the opposite is also true. After a lot of trial and error over the years getting disease resistant, zone appropriate, and inmho own root roses works best for me here in this area and take the least amount of care.

Our 'Pat Austin' is an 'own root' plant. Try Graham Thomas for a yellow? It is listed for a 'cooler' climate.
Not a fan of all those petals!!
One drop of rain will knock it over! (Nice color, though.)
Don't flop after a good rain??
Placed an order with Debbie for some clems. I'll post the list later.
Not if you know how to trim the canes after they flower, that way you get good sturdy canes for the next batch, if you let them flower with abandon and don't trim them afterwards you get the thin scrawny canes. Of course with the climbers that doesn't come into play since they're 'hanging up there' on whatever trellis you have anyway... lol
I'll post a shot DURING a rainstorm this year to show 'ya! lol!
How far back do you trim?
In the fall I cut them all back by 1/3 the volume of the bush. More importantly, when I cut the spent rose I cut them just above the first 5 leaflet leaf under the flower, that assures me a sturdier cane for the next bloom. The climbing ones are a different story, I train them with jupe rope and just give them a trim every now and then. I also add a cup of bone meal and work it in at the base just before the season starts to get them strong and fertilize weekly with liquid rose food.
