I might try a few, but will also try using my rooting pots (air layering) on them this year.
What Have You Ordered 2010 #4
Thanks Joyce. I really like some of the newer hybrids that I have and would like more without buying them! I did collect seed from one and will try it, along with layering. Thank you.
wow - i have tried to grow them from seeds i've collected with no sucess - maybe i am weeding them out?
The one I inherited on the property seeded itself all over! Even though I cut it down two years ago, I'm still removing many seedlings each year.
Jada I believe that is a Rose of Sharon which is in the same family as the Hardy Hibiscus, but the hardy hibiscus aren't shrubs they are herbaceous perennials that max out at about 4' and die down each year. Correct me if I'm wrong of course, I've just never seen a double Hardy hibiscus before and I've seen a ton of Rose of Sharon's that look like your picture. : ) Here's a link to the plant file http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/788/
Wha it is funny you say that because when I checked my journal I found something relate dto what you said in it. http://davesgarden.com/community/journals/viewentry/173182/
JoAnn's post cheered me the most today! Yesterday, my doctor handed me a chocolate & said "Way better than sex"--I was kind of depressed---how old does he think I am---oh, wait, he knows!
trouble - big trouble - just received the new 4th edition of the complete guide of japanese maples - information on over 600 varieties!!!
I'll probably get mine today. How many NEW varieties compared to the last one?
Wha, you are in trouble for sure.

Nothing specific, Robin. Parents are Shigitatsu sawa and Kasagi yama. (There were rumors about them.) Description is very nice.
By the way, mine is signed by the author, Peter Gregory - in Japanese.
Hope the book is in English. Patti
Thanks, Victor---I have kasagiyama, one of the parents----it seems to have survived the winter in my garage---guess I should be putting it back outside soon---you think?
Yes. I have left a few JM's outside in pots all winter.
Victor, Do you mulch them or what? How big are the pots? Sunken in the ground? Thanks, Patti
In a sheltered corner on the step outside the porch. They are mulched, but not heavily.
Working again. Patti
Remembered that I left another one out front - exposed - as an experiment. Looks fine - has nice big buds. It did have some snow cover for part of the winter. It is Peaches and Cream.
How big are the pots and do you water them or just ignore them? Patti
Different sizes - smallest is probably 2 or 3 gal. I ignore them. They get hit when it rains.
what kind of pots are they? wood, terra cotta, or porcelian?
Victor, I just want to know where they are and a good description, as I might do a drive by and take them home with me. But dang you have an alarm on your drive. I could leave that Jade tree I am still growing for you.
Plastic.
Ha ha - you can take a deer!
i ask because in glancing at the jm book yesterday i recommended "breathable" containers such as wood or terracotta - mine are on porcelain which like plastic was not recommended - want the roots to be able to breath
bring a deer decoy and be stealth patti - if you need help count me in!
My potted JM's were never out of breath.
you don't give them exercise? do they are "breathe" :)
I didn't order these, I got them at the dollar store, they were only 25 cents a pack! They don't have a ton of seeds in them, but that's a goos thing because I never use them all from the larger packs.
Pea 'Alaska'
Lettuce 'Grand Rapids'
Lettuce 'Iceberg'
Pepper 'California Wonder'
Squash 'Dark Green Zucchini'
Squash 'Straightneck Early Yellow'
Carrot 'Danvers Half Long'
Dill 'Long Island Mammoth'
Watermelon 'Sugar Baby'
Zinnia 'Giant Cactus Mix'
Forget Me Not
Gee, Meredith----your garden is all set! Thanks for the heads up on the JM, folks----it's going outside today. It is in a porcelain container, but looks great to me---all budded. I will plant it in its permanent home next month.
Nice buy Meredith. Looks like you are all ready for spring.
