Lily_Love, red-headed woodpeckers are my favorites! Love that photo. All great pics. The lighting is just perfect on your cardinal.

As long as I'm posting -- here's a robin.

Wow... Congrats Marna!! I may have to go cruise the cornfields tomorrow...

Resin...such a handsome bird! I do wish you would post photos more often.

Gp...I was betting that a pileated might show up there!

GP, Your so lucky to have the Pileated!

You go Mr. Red-bellied! Cute Buntings too!

I still have never had a crow near my feeders, nice one nanny!

TT since you are asking, you might lay off the sunflower seeds for a week or two.

Beautiful...howdy! Your other photo made me chuckle too!

Mayo, FL(Zone 8b)

You go and spent a $100 a month on birdseed and they are eating old dried leaves!

Actually this thrifty cardinal spotted a sunflower seed in this curled up leaf and worked to get it out. Of course the ground is covered in seed, but this one must have had some special appeal.

Lily - That is so great that the BB is hanging in there. That will be so special watching the family grow. I haven't had the pleasure of having backyard BB, I have to go down the road to enjoy them...maybe one day. A quick check on them this morning before church resulted in this pair.

JH, fortunately BB do stay here year round. I'm relatively new to bird watching. I'm learning new things about birds everyday by being a part of our group here at Dave's. This is the first time ever I witnessed BB to the non-meal worms feeder. (a substitute feed during the coldest of days). I was beside myself when I first spotted one on the suet. Yesterday, the first BB came, then it brought back another. Today the pair consistently returned for more feeding, so I'm hopeful that I'll see more in the near future.

GP your Buntings are so attractive!

Very nice pics JH!

Sun is out today and my big Canada moochers are gone. A pic of a Red-shouldered hawk from yesterday afternoon.

I can't believe how fast the threads fill up. And I do thank everyone for all your wonderful photos. I have been out of town for a few days, and am now catching up. I did do a couple of hours of bird count yesterday. Don't believe I have ever had so few birds in my yard as I have had this winter and we have had warmer than normal weather, and less snow. Only finches are the Goldfinches and House finches. And only E. sparrows.

Yesterday I saw the first robin of spring, Was nice to see and hear.

Again my thanks to all of you for taking the photos of your birds and the time to send them on so others like me can enjoy them.

Red, gotta to love those moochers from Canada. lol. Some came over the winter, and decided to stay year round here. I'm glad of that since seeing them with their signets never fail to put a smile on my face. Ruth, I heard that you haven't gotten many variety of birds there this winter, nor had enough snow. Hah, they all went Southbound this winter for I've got so much of them. (Both birds and snow -- whatever snow we've got~grin).
Duc I took a liking to your cute Oak Titmouse. Someone help me differentiate b/w Bewick and Carolina Wrens please. They both look alike to my inexperienced eyes. The Ca. Towhee is all puffs up and pretty. Red, those Redshouldered-Hawks do travel far. We have them down here too.

My pride and joy backdoor today: Presenting my pretty boy the Blue Bird.

JH, the BB is so much more photogenic under sun light. ^_^

HOLY MOLY....You guys are really on a roll! I finally am back and can't believe all the postings...actually I am flabbergasted! Well done everyone and Happy Belated Valentines Day. I need to go back and look at everything again...I just did a quick run through. Congratulations on everyone who has added to their list!

Continue on...I need to go check the roadside for Horned Larks!! LOL! BTW...I showed the Horned Lark photos to DH and he said..."yeah, I used to see those all the time out in the fields..they have those little horns on their heads" !!!

DH!!!! "oh yah, i used to see that big wood pecker with the ivory bill all the time!"

Awesome pictures, too many good ones to mention them all.
This is one of my favorite things to do each day, check up on all the great shots.

LOL Marna!

Julie...I agree!

Here is a really terrible shot but a first that I got the other day for the bird count. It is a very noisy female Belted Kingfisher. There was also a male but he flew off as soon as we arrived. We could hear them calling to each other so we didn't stay very long since it was cold and dark and they needed to fish. They are the coolest bird!!

Thumbnail by dellrose
The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Here is the spot where the Kingfisher's stay...there are lots of hiding places so I hope to return on a sunny day. It is just a few miles from my house and a very lovely spot.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Rose, that Kingfisher is on my "want to photograph list" and your photo is much better than the one I have.
Lily, love the BB with the water in the background. The Bewick's Wren is more of a brown compared to the rusty coloring of the Carolina. Also, the Bewick's has a thin white line on the side edge of the tail.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Red...beautiful hawk....I keep hoping to see one sitting out there where they usually are.

Rose...very cool about the Kingfisher!

Love your titmouse Duc!

It is really hard to get the fast little birds with the new camera!! A Carolina Chickadee that it took me 4 tries to get a "good" one!

Nanny, great job with your birds. Love the downy and that junco is brave to stand in the cold snow.

Well, my husband and I were worried about our remaining dog's depression-guess we've had some too-so we decided to find a new family member right away. We're still grieving for our Chipper, but he's in a good place now and not suffering. We found this little girl while doing a search of shelters within driving distance. We were able to bring her home immediately because the shelters are so full and we've named her Maggie. Our vet will help with an ID, but we think she's a mixture of maltese poodle and something else. What a sweet little girl she is already-such manners like no other dog I've ever brought home!

I am so happy for you Duc...she is beautiful and my eyes are definitely flooding over with tears of happiness for you! Too sweet for words and I think you may have to start a forum just for Maggie. Congratulations!

The Ozarks, MO(Zone 5b)

Nanny...really nice shots of your birds, you are doing great with your new camera. I haven't heard or seen a Chickadee for ages...I'm jealous!

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

awww Duc! cute cute cute. Definitely looks like some terrier in there.

that's so odd that you dont' have chickadees around there Rose. My goodness you have everything else!

South Hamilton, MA

I will have to go over the thread another day as pictures are not appearing. I'm sure that the new girl is happy to be in a home instead of a place with barking dogs.
