Daily Pics. #286

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Very nice Nanny, must be fun to see the sun!!
Sorry about this pic of the Hawk, The sun was behind the subject. Had to lighten quite a bit. I don't know which one he is. Couldn't get ID for lack of details.

edited; to correct bird info.

The Black-capped Chickadee posing for me. Wish he had been in better light, so we could see his twinkling eye.

This is the third time I have seen snow this winter. It normally takes ten years for me to see three snows. Other than the Bluebirds the local birds seem to have stayed home today. Mostly all I saw were northern visitors. Here is a Goldfinch right at home in the snow.

holy smokes frank!

Melbourne, FL

Glad somebody has birds. Love the Finch combo.

Marlton, NJ

Great pics Burn and Frank!

That is a good variety of Finch.

PERTH, Australia

Beautiful birdies, everyone. Frank, that's incredible!

jhowdy, I love the osprey in flight shot. Well caught (both of you).

For 4 years this little Grey Butcherbird has coped extremely well with a leg that has been displaced backwards. It is able to rear babies and can certainly catch its own food, but it comes to us for supplementary feeds. When this first happened to the leg, we had our doubts about its ability to survive, not being able to preen, etc. It comes an sits on our laps for a feed.

Sitting beside it on the rail outside the kitchen yesterday and staring directly at me was this Kookaburra, who has been hanging around a bit lately.

PERTH, Australia

It stayed there as I moved out onto the patio. We never feed Kookaburras - they will become a menace, they get so bold and if the door was left open they'd come into the house. Providing the Butcherbird with supplementary feeds would become impossible because it would be there and grab the food straight from your hand and believe me, they aren't likely to discriminate between your fingers and the meat.

Whoops, same photo. Here's what I meant to post

Thanks for all the compliments of my pics - this is fun.

jhowdy - That's a cool pic of the Osprey during "warmer" times. Real clean pic.

pelletory - I liked the two pics of the Coopers Hawk. I wonder if it would ever tackle a grown squirrel?

nanny_56 - your new camera is doing real good. You must be getting more used to it. Nice capture of the Cardinal and Mourning Dove sharing the dish.

burn_2007 - the moment I saw the waxwing, I knew I had me a new bird. All your pics looked good, especially, the Goldfinch sitting pretty.

f_chisolm - Wow, you are covered up with Goldfinches like I was yesterday. Not nearly as many around today.

MargaretK - I still can't get over how comical that Kookaburra looks. Cool pic.

Here are a few more snaps I took yesterday.

Here's a Tufted Titmouse perched on a limb.

Went for a quick 10 minute ride on a back road and got one of the new bird's I was looking for. Horned Lark...plan on spending more time tomorrow afternoon looking for the Lapland Longspur's. Picture's not great but I didn't have the tripod with me.

Burd_Fotos - I had to look up the Horned Lark. I liked your second pic best, because I can see the "horns". I guess it was pretty easy to spot in the snow, huh. Really, all three pics show me what I saw in my book - good capture.

Thanks Hack. I was sitting in my truck... with all the snow covering the field's they are forced to look for food along the side of the road..which work's because there may be left-over corn from the harvest to hold them over. When I heard them making calls to one another it was a sound Ive always heard but never knew it was them. Funny how that work's.

Mayo, FL(Zone 8b)

burn - Great variety of subjects, they all look "very" well feed.

Frank - I guess my finches have gone your way. They have mostly cleared out here. That's quite a group you have there. The first image of the gold in the snow is a great capture.

Margaret - great images (especially the last one, wow) and info. We had a crow with a similar affliction and he seemed unaffected. Actually probably did better than most since we often catered to him out of sympathy.

Hack - great sampling of your visitors, I need to come sit in your yard one day, impressive variety.

Wild Rose - Nice contrast against the snow on the Warbler, thanks for sharing.

Burd - I like to make those short excursions too, to see what else is visiting my area. Often they get me in trouble when I do so on the way home from work, when 10 minutes turns into an hour! Very nice find, congrats.

Marlton, NJ

Very nice pics everyone!

Love the Butcherbird Marg. Thanks for feeding him. The Kook is cute too.

Hack, Nice ones. Love the male Eastern Towhee!

VA, Congratulations on the new bird; Yellow-rumped Warbler.

Burd, Love the Horned Lark!

Hack, Yes Coopers will eat squirrels given the chance.

No sun here today yet.

Whiteside County, IL(Zone 5a)

Congrats Burd! I've been looking for those here too.

Marlton, NJ

Burd, Your pics of the Horned Lark reminded of the List of Top 20 Birds in Decline which the Horned Lark is on.
