About 25 miles south of Boston, 6 inches of snow (and some sleet), so we were lucky. Our sympathies to NY, NJ and others who got socked hard.
Today's Weather in Your Garden - 63
wc what do you have for bonsai? - i am just starting to get interested in them, and pictures?
White-throated sparrow---they sing "Oh, Sam Peabody, Peabody, Peabody" Love them! Your other bird was a house finch---they are raspberry colored. We had 2-3" only---hard to tell with the drifting, but the drive is mostly clear & dry. Hope all to the south of us are OK---my stepdaughter is in Aruba instead of Long Island---she lucked out!
Temp supposedly is 39. Not warm enough to take gloves off for very long. Bright & sunny. Still difficult to see if there is any new melting. We just had a dusting overnight & that didn't seem to be all over, just in some places.
Wha, I have (2 )25" Juniper bonsai, (an upright and a cascade)

an acer palmatum and an indoor ficus.
Cant seem to post any pics, so added links above, (the pics not up to date, those specimens shown are 30-50% larger now). They're all in dormancy, just have to water them once a month in winter.
* Lost 5 pine bonsai to an unusually rainy/ cold spring last year... The ones I have left are the strongest, ...the ones that are the most adaptable to the weather.
Crazy website.. one second things are working and the next they're not! lol!
those are nice wc - did you bonsai those yourself or purchase them? i have one juniper bonsai my wife got for me - there are two jm's in the back i am thinking to bonsai.
Beauties.
Thanks! ☺
(that's part of my backyard this afternoon btw, lol!!)
- I bought the trees from a bonsai supplier and the pots and media from another supplier(s) then I made them myself, - it's easy, just have to keep them in shape every now and then...
They're left outside, correct?
Yes, up until the outside low temp drops to ~25° then they're brought into the breezway until temps get back up to the 40°s as a nightime low. Windchill causes a lot of damage if left outside in too low temps.
same here i keep my one on the floor of the garage
I'm amazed at how the roots don't freeze in those tiny pots.
... They can if left to dry out, that's why you have to water them in the winter and make sure they dont! lol! -just enough to keep them a tiny bit wet, so that it can turn to ice when it gets real cold like 12° etc. The water has an insulating effect...
oohhh nice shots Victor if we have a contest this year.. that might be a winter winner...
winter wonderland WC!!
Snow cover must be a welcome sight for them.
Thanks, Allison!
victor they are not out in the snow - wc keeps them in the breezeway which i am assuming is enclosed - the bonsai place i go to recommends to bring them in after t-day
Right, the breezway is enclosed and gets a lot of light, but the temp is only about 10° warmer than the outside. - After Tday is a good rule of thumb.
No, he said the breezeway is for 25 degrees and below.
???
(they don't ever receive direct snow outside because of the canopy, it only allows water in not a snow cover) - the same canopy I have to rebuild now ... lol! It's a canopy of special 15% sunblock material on a frame which keeps them from burning in the summer heat.
Not beneficial to cover the pots with snow??
i was told to throw some snow on mine or water them
You can, but sometimes it can be deceiving. I like to know just how much moisture the soil has absorbed...
I didn't mean instead of watering - I meant for the insulation.
I let my little ones get covered in snow for protection
I leave some JM's outside, as well as others in pots. They have a nice cover now.
Only lost power after I left for work this morning, and it was back on by the time I got home. Quite a few roads closed due to fallen trees and telephone poles. I have a LOT of very large tree limbs down. One fell on my neighbor's car, crushing the roof and windshield. His son came over about 11:00 last night to move mine from under the trees after his Dad's got crunched. I have great neighbors!
Wow! Thank God no one was hurt.
cartoon in today's Salem News--man walking in deep snow in D.C. (obvious as W. Monument has a snow cap on it, WH & capitol building drawn with snow on roofs). Caption reads: 'whadia know, Saints win the superbowl & hell has frozen over'.
Hee hee! Good one.
Very Funny!!!
Nice fence & matching trellises Venu! - The snow was heavy- not as much as we got back in the end of Dec when I got 24", but much heavier, caused more damage!
what a shame Weeze
Aw, that stinks.
Guy was killed about an hour north of here shovelling his driveway, got hit in the head with a falling branch.
Beautiful night here, 30° and clear! ☺
