Dont they dance in the water?
Sports Talk!! Part 2 - Picthers and Catchers Next Week!
True, Lucy, but then so is dancing (regular). Remember, I like it! Yes, some of these selections are strange. Curling, sync swimming, etc. And they canceled baseball! If curling, why not shuffleboard?? Darts?
Curling has been confined to the northern states here, but it seems to be gaining in Europe. I would hate to do shuffleboard on ice. I think people often look down on sports with which they are not familiar & while I am disappointed iwith baseball being dropped, more countries play cricket.
The skiing was exciting, but also liked the ice dancing----didn't see much, because I kept falling asleep---think I need a tonic.
I kept yelling at them to be careful and slow down.
Exactly! Sports should require being athletic. I'm in Curling shape.
Maybe they will introduce Nintendo.
heehee
Speaking of athletic:
UConn women keep heading toward history
UConn men are suddenly not dead yet
Silver for Davis!
Yeah, curling boggles my mind. Who thought it up?!! Other 'sports' that are not 'athletic' are archery and shooting.
Army men kicked Navy butt today.
I agree. They are skills. Those people can be very talented. But they aren't athletes in my book.
Only because they were on land!
Hee hee. Great atmosphere with the competing bands, etc. Very noisy!
Its a classic. Must have been great!
Curling was invented in Scotland like golf. It does take some athletic ability to shove 40 lb. rocks over the ice. It is not as easy as it looks. who's against archery?
Ever pull a 180lb bow and hold it while you hit a dime dead center? lol...
No one is against either. Just a question of what is a sport vs game of skill. Poker, darts, scrabble:not sports. Track, skating, basketball: sports.
Then people argue the case for curling, archery, golf, car racing, etc. It doesn't mean they are easy or don't require great skill.
My opinion is sports should require athleticism.
They should have an Olympics solely for wanna be jocks...
As a teenager I couldn't handle a 16lb bowling ball. Takes some ability to handle a 40 lb rock. You have to be in shape. I was pretty good at ping pong. game of skill except the way the Chinese play it, athletic.
Well put, Dave/David.
"Although many are small in stature, archers are not limited in terms of strength and stamina.
The average draw weight of a man’s bow is 50 pounds.
In an average tournament, the bow is lifted and drawn more than 312 times for a total of 15,600 pounds (7.8 tons!) pulled over four days.
Women pull about 5.3 tons with their 34 pound average bows.
To put this in a different perspective, the world's strongest weightlifters lift up to 3,000 pounds (1.5 tons) in a competition."
From http://www.archeryweb.com/archery/olympics.htm
☺
I had a 13 & 21 lbs bow (without extra stuff on it). My dad's 44 lb, I could not even bend. Sadly the equipment was lost in a move, My dad used to shoot at rabbits in the backyard (target arrows, not hunting). I don't think that he ever hit one, but once split a blade of grass to the amusement of all, including himself.
OMG! Does it never end?! What IS with all this curling?!
I don't mind watching it per se; I even enjoy it to a point, and have no problem with it being an Olympic sport - but why is it taking DAYS? The pairs and men's figure skating was over in two days; some of the skiing events and skating events were over in a few days (or less?). Why on earth does this curling take two weeks to get through? I guess I need to pay more attention to the competition hierarchy or whatever you call it - you know, how the rounds are done, etc. - but this is getting tiresome. Every single time I put on the TV to see what's on, it's curling!
I'm off to watch the Russians/Czechs play some hockey. Now there's a sport!
Not watching hockey as I don't follow it. The curling is in the round robin stage to see who goes on., sort of like early games of a basketball tournament. Just watch the biathalon which was interesting, as you don't see it very often. Not putting hockey down, used to play field hockey myself. Just not interested.
No----I don't follow hockey, either. Watched both UCONN teams win yesterday, Dave---that was expected, but with the guys, you just never know.
Hockey ...YucK! I'd rather watch curling, more interesting.
Edit: added YucK!

"...Hockey ...YucK! I'd rather watch curling, more interesting...."
?!?!?!
Had several answers, deleted them all, and then just decided to let it be.... :) Besides, the third period is about to start and it's a great game.
At least pitchers & catchers are signing autographs. Interesting interview with Shaun White the orther day. He said that he signs for kids cause he remembers asking athletes as a kid & being brushed off. Of couse some kids can be fresh>
...Good idea! lol!!
Gold for Bode Miller!
Again, not minimizing the strength/skill needed for these things. I used to carry cinderblocks, mix cement etc for a living.Doesn't mean bricklaying is a sport.
Definition of sport
"an athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of a competitive nature, as racing, baseball, tennis, golf, bowling, wrestling, boxing, hunting, fishing, etc."
So it's an activity that requires a skill OR physical prowess
Wow! Great game by team USA in hockey! Incredible play by Miller in goal.
Here's a definition of olympics:
(used with a pl. verb) A group of modern international athletic contests held as separate winter and summer competitions every four years in a different city. In 1994 the winter games were moved ahead two years so that the winter and summer games would alternate every two years.
'athletic'!! The Olympic committee should take note of that!
You guys don't know what athletic is anymore if a Budweiser commercial doesn't tell you! lol!!
Wikipedia Definition:
A sport is commonly defined as an organized, competitive, and skillful physical activity requiring commitment and fair play. It is governed by a set of rules or customs. In a sport the key factors are the physical capabilities and skills of the competitor when determining the outcome (winning or losing). The physical activity involves the movement of people, animals and/or a variety of objects such as balls and machines. In contrast, games such as card games and board games, though these could be called mind sports, require only mental skills. Non-competitive activities such as jogging and rock-climbing, are usually classified as recreations.
unless you are rock climbing for time against another
Then short track skating should be out as there is a lack of fair play. The american & canadian team have to back home & play with each other as well as against. Hope there isn't trashing of hotels like the american team did before.
there is no one from medford, ma on the team this year so all will get their hotel deposit back.
i agree ohno was pushed last night
