Oh man - just watched the American guy in skating. No comment.
Sports Talk!! Part 2 - Picthers and Catchers Next Week!
Weir or the other guy?
I'm just guessing, but I bet he meant both of them.
May not be your cup of tea, but I thought there was some pretty amazing skating by many of the men tonight, as well as a few sad showings. I would prefer less glitz and glitter in the costume department in all the "sports" for both the men and women. I find it distracting. Curling didn't go so well for either of the USA teams today and I must say I saw very few brilliant shots by anyone except in a highlight clip on the news. But the gals hockey team was awesome. I haven't been following the men's hockey...all professionals, so I don't see the point, like the Basket Ball in the summer Olympics. Now watching women's speed skating. Patti
The costumes were rather bizarre---what was with those black feathers on the skater's hands? Gross! CT's own Lindsey J was DQ in the snowboarding----after the awful gaffe at last Olympics---
Yeah, what the heck was that black feather thing going on???
Yes, Weir. The second American did great. It is my cup of tea - always liked figure skating and the men's is my favorite. Much faster paced and a more athletic. Amazing they are doing quads now. But yes, the costumes are really over the top.
costumers are crazy - i cringed when the youngest japanese skater was out there and scott ?? said "great shirt". liked the hendrix song he skated too and his was the most subdued costume at least.
Watching curling now. Kind of boring.
Going to the Army - Navy hops games (men and women) on Saturday. It's sold out. CBS is showing it.
GO NAVY!!!!
Hubby doesn't even want figure skating on when he's in the same room.
Gold for Vonn!!!!!!!!!!!!!
and silver for mancuso!!!
watched the live blog for an hour.
Cool! I only saw the Vonn headline. We're doing very well.
Good for Vonn! So glad she got to compete
Wow - Saun White was simply unbelievable! He gets so much higher than everyone else. And that final mover was outrageous.
Pitcher and catchers!
you got that right!
shani davis goes pretty fast too!
There were some serious wipe outs on the women's down hill. OUCH!
Yes, that downhill course was tough!
Yes on Davis, Bill! Amazing how he accelerates on those turns!
those falls were something - watching the blog live i thought my pc had froze a couple times - then i would scoll down and realize it was another DNF
i thought the quiet f-bomb and the s-word white's coach dropped before the second run while they were celebrating at the top was pretty cool - hey they are snowboarders! - you hardly ever here athlete's or coaches do that anymore with everything so politically correct.
Quiet?? I clearly heard it. He should have known better with the camerman standing just feet away. And what was with all that hand slapping, hugging and bumping before White's run?!!! Getting psyched is one thing, but that was ridiculous. Almost as bad as the painful, seemingly endless coverage of Vonn crying in hubby's arms.
hold on there - he just won the gold and they were celebrating - and it did not seem to efffect the second run.
as for vonn with all she had to overcome with the bone bruise not to mention the pre-olympic hype, give her a break, i would have broke down myself - hell if i skied that fast and was still standing i might have broke down glad to be alive --- and then went to change my pants:)
No, not the post-gold celebration. The pre-run ritual that they did for both runs. It's a bit silly.
I was not criticizing Vonn for crying, but NBC for showing it FOREVER!
well they are not "normal" people to be flying up and down that half pipe and doing those tricks - i thought louie vito and his ipod and nodding head annoying.
vonn was good theater.
Vonn's hubby even knew it was going on too long in front of the cameras.
I think everything yesterday was very exciting. Can't believe people do some of these things. I don't blame the athletes for their superstitions or language. It must be awful to have to edit yourself because someone is constantly sticking a camera in your face at the most tense and anxious moments. Just show us their performance and the after race comment, would be much better for everyone I think. They are only people and many in their early 20s or younger and we want them all to be perfect in every situation. I know I couldn't do that 24/7. No one can and then when they slip up that's all we here over and over again. They have worked for years and years to be there and should be left alone until the race or event is done. Just my opinion.
Ngam - I agree. It would be really difficult to live life with a camera in your face all the time. I always tell myself that I'd be famous by now if I didn't value my privacy as much as I do. The only thing is, I just don't know what I'd be famous for.
Random and very small claim to fame for the day: My aunt used to have a day care center in Park City, Utah and Vonn was one of her kids. They used to go skiing for field trips.
The camera business goes both ways. They love the limelight, but want it on their terms. It's not like they're taken by surprise when the camera is nearby! And Whit's coach is certainly not in his 20's. He's a grown man. It's not the end of the world that he dropped the f-bomb, but he should have known better. School is off and kids are into that sport. My kids were watching and heard it. I would rather NOT have to explain it.
Cool story, Sox.
They should have the 7 second delay on all programs, then that wouldn't happen. It would be bleeped out. That's the way some people talk specially when they are excited. I think the network should have the responsibility to insure that sort of thing doesn't go out on the airwaves. I think I would be tempted to make a gesture or two if the camera was in my face like some of the shots I saw for the cross country skiers. I mean they aren't saying anything, would not a longer shot be just as informative. Some of the shots were so close you could count the pores in their skin for heaven's sake. The other thing is they probably get used to the cameras and forget about them after a while. They wanted candid, they got candid. Too bad they didn't take measures to make sure it wasn't too candid.
Nice story about the day care and field trips.
Yes, NBC has the responsibility.
Yeah, where was that 7-second delay? Now that I have teenagers, unfortunately I have discovered that swearing in public is not as taboo as it once was. Even swearing in casual conversation seems more acceptable.
Last year when I dropped my daughter off for hockey practice at 4:45 AM, I would go to a local diner and have breakfast (not worth going back home because I had to pick her up in an hour to bring her to school.) So I thought I would have a leisurely, quiet breakfast, read the paper, etc. Well, every morning I went, there were two contractor-type guys (couldn't figure out what trade exactly) and every other word out of their mouth was the f-word. Sheesh. I just wondered "WHY?" Why the need to talk like that? I'm not a prude by any stretch, but I like to think I have a bit of class in public at least, lol, if not in private. Oh well.
I can only imagine athletes have more of this tendency, especially those doing a team sport. I've heard some of the conversation coming out of those hockey locker rooms (my son's AND my daughter's, lol) and it's some rough stuff!
Yes---I find myself cringing ----I feel it's a lack of respect to the people around you---but to some, it's part of their everyday conversation! I remember being at our friend's farm in NH when a granddaughter of our friend---she was probably 10 at the time---said "Jesus" about something---her father, a tough kid, was nearby. He said I hope you're talking about a church experience, Liz, otherwise I don't want to hear it---thought that was pretty good.
Stop f-ing complaining, Dee!! ^_^
DH has a theory that there is more physical violence now as swear words are used in nomal conversation so when something goes wrong they resort to the physical.
Yes, White had won the gold so teamates were suggesting extra tough tricks not only as celebration but 'give a show' as if something went wrong, no points would not be deducted.
"...I feel it's a lack of respect to the people around you..."
I could not agree more!! It's a lack of respect for those around you, (an indifference to them, really) and a lack of self-respect too.
Another story - I was bringing my daughter and her friend home from school one day when they were in about 8th grade. The girl, who I knew quite well, says from the back seat, "Oh man, I gotta take a piss!" OMG! I almost drove off the road! My daughter would never say that in front of an adult - even now that she is 19, lol. I guess I didn't know this girl as well as I thought, lol. Not really a swear word, I know, but it just sounded so crass and vulgar.
Oh well, back to sports....
LOL, Victor! I was f-ing waiting for that one!
Hee hee!
I agree.
IrisMa, I like your DH's theory! The more common a cuss word becomes, the less weight it carries with people so those that resort to cursing to express themselves have to find new and heavier ways to communicate their anger and frustration.
I think I only heard a girl say that a few times in my life, Dee. Guys say it all the time.
