Gulf Coast Round Up

Bubba - can you actually grow good horseradish here?

Missouri City, TX

Tastes good to me.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Then I'd like to give it a try, please.

Kingwood, TX(Zone 9a)

I may have the husband and baby, or maybe just the baby, but I'll definitely be there! My flower beds are young and I don't have anything to trade (yet), but I look forward to meeting everyone. :)

Wells, TX(Zone 8b)

dont worry about trading..Come for the Partay!!!! its gonna be Fun!! Im bet youll come home with "stuff" no matter what!

Pearland, TX

Add mother and baby for me. :) We're gonna be late though like 11:30. What time is food usually? And I don't want to miss trading. I have things to share. I've never been to one. I'm so excited.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

My sister-in-law is going to come, too. :-)

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

The more the merrier! Now, just a little reminder, don't forget to bring food! I think I've counted 44 coming so far...I LIKE food. I love pot luck food. I don't want to run out of food... :-)

Also, if you want to be a part of the door prize drawing, bring something garden-related to share for each member of your group, if you would like them all to share in the fun. Everyone who comes with a door prize, goes home with a door prize. (And a bunch of plants they didn't expect.)

There are picnic tables with benches under the pavilion, but you might want to bring a lawn chair - those benches usually get covered in plants.

Check out the map. Do you have any questions?

Marilyn, am I forgetting anything? I'll bring name tags, and tickets for the door prize drawing.

Dallas, TX

WHERE IS THE FOOD THREAD?

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

You know - that list under Texas Gardening that shows all the threads? It has a thread for the food, too. Now, DITCH THE CAPS! Seriously, glad you're still coming - I was concerned since we hadn't heard from you for awhile. OTOH, you do tend to get lost...

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

I'm sorry but I'll likely not be coming. I've held off participating in the conversation bec. I wasn't sure. I'll be in Copperas Cove. Hope everyone has a good time.

Anne

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Awww Anne,,,,sorry you can't come....we'll miss ya!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Me too - I was looking forward to seeing you!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Sheila - Dogs are allowed. Yay!

The RU begins at 10 am, but I wanted you to know that I have reserved the pavilion from 8 to 4, so if you want to get there earlier, it is OK. We have Pavilion B.

The pavilion has six 8 ft picnic tables with seating. There is a grill. The pavilion is surrounded on three sides by a raised concrete wall - good for sitting on, or placing things on, like food, or plants. But try as I may, I couldn't see where food AND plants AND 45 people would fit! (They say it will hold 70 people.)

So, I've reserved the "stage" too, which is adjacent to the pavilion. It is covered, like the pavilion, but is raised. It's a nice area where we can put our food and keep the pavilion for the plants. I'll bring tables - I have three card tables and a 6 foot table. You might throw in a lawn chair or two, just in case the plants take up the picnic table seating space. You who have been through this before know what I mean. It will probably be just fine, because lots of the claimed plants get put under the tables or off to the side before we eat. There is electricity available for the pavilion and for the stage.

If you have a canoe or kayak that you would like to bring, there is a boat launching ramp. No motorboats allowed.

Parking: This is a popular park. I am hoping with all the other activities going on in The Woodlands that day, that parking won't become a problem. If it is, we'll unload your plants and food and then direct you to parking alongside Lake Woodlands Dr, or to parking at our church, just on the other side of the bridge, with DH or I acting as shuttle service. I sincerely hope it won't come to that, but just wanted you to be forewarned and armed with the "in case of" information.

The map: http://www.mapquest.com/maps?address=2505 Lake Woodlands Dr...

If you are into art or jewelry, the Woodlands Waterway Art Festival is being held Saturday and Sunday, alongside the waterway, extending from the Marriott hotel to Town Green Park. It really does have nice things, and we always attend. I'll see if I can get some maps from our visitor's bureau. http://www.woodlandsartsfestival.com/

There is a shopping mall in the same area, with another, more upscale, shopping area called Market Street just across from the mall. The area is called Town Center, and you will also find many excellent restaurants there. "Trolley" cars operate throughout the area, and you can hop off and on as you desire. http://www.thewoodlandscvb.com/trolley/

Magnolia, TX(Zone 8b)

CJ, scratch Sas, her DH, & Painter Allyn.

But Sandy & Sylvia are both due at my house, Friday. Going to 1488 to meet Sylvia. That 76 exit is confusing for me sometimes if I'm not paying attention. Can't tell you how many times I have wound up in the mall or Lake Woodlands in the last 6 yrs. lol

Sounds like you have it all together & know where you put it! lol But I'm available for anything you need after I do payroll this afternoon. LMK
:~)

Spring, TX

I've also been watching the conversation, unsure whether I'll be able to come. I had surgery last week and really thought I'd be up to 100% by now, but I'm not. I'm going to try to stop by for a little while (y'all sound like such nice people!) and if I make it will bring some plants to trade.

Dallas, TX

Come on out Spring! You will feel better when you get here. A couple of years ago I came six weeks after hip surgery. I was worse off when I came before the hip surgery. lol

Buffalo, TX(Zone 8b)

Sylvia, I'm scared to ask, .....but was that surgery before or after the lowboy ride through the cow pasture?
Charlene

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

springtx - No need to bring anything but your body. It will do you good to get out for a little bit and get a group hug. A gentle group hug...

Linda, So sorry your people aren't coming, and I sure hope everything is OK.

Yes, you'd better help Sylvia get on the right road. She does have a tendency to get lost, even sitting at home. LOL! But exit 76 is the one for The Woodlands. Won't she be going west on 1488 to get to your house?

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Carolyn.. I sure am glad you mentioned exit 76... are there signs from the freeway to the park?? btw.. I am coming by myself

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Becky - I posted a link to a map that you can personalize. Just put in your address and it will give you the directions.

Northshore Park is off of Lake Woodlands Dr. Coming from the north on I-45, you take exit 76. You'll be on the feeder road - move over to the right lane and make a right onto Lake Woodlands Dr. That will take you past the mall on your left. Just keep going straight, and the last intersection you will go through is Grogan's Mill (light). Then you'll see a big church on the right, followed by a bridge, and just after the bridge there will be a sign on the right of the road that says Northshore Park, with an arrow left. Turn left into the park.

If you go past the sign that says Panther Creek Village, you've gone too far. Turn around and try again.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Thanks Carolyn... I looked at the map.. guess i missed the exit #, but i went back and looked at the map.. and LOL.. there it was! I saw the aerial map also, and figured the Methodist church was the one you went to, and where we might have to park. That is a really beautiful park, and I'll bring my camera... I LUV talking pics...

I gotta get in bed! I bet I won't get any sleep tomorrow night.. I am soooo excited to see everyone!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

Well, I am not going to make it. DH's back has been giving him a fit on ourn trip, so we are heading home. He has surgery coming up on the 19th, so maybe he will be fit for later RUs. Hate to miss meeting those of you I haven't met, but maybe you will be at San Marcos RU, I plan to be there.

Houston, TX(Zone 9a)

Oh, Sheila, I'm so sorry! We'll miss you!

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Sheila I hate to hear that as well.. I'll miss you, but tell Herman I hope he does well with the surgery!! Hope to see you in the fall!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Rats, Sheila!! Do you realize that we have not been in the same place at the same time since way back when everybody got us confused with each other? I wanted them to see that we really don't look alike at all. LOL And I was looking forward to seeing you again - it's been awhile. OTH, driving makes back pain worse for some reason. So go home, take care of that back, and I hope to see you soon. I hope the surgery will be super successful.

I have a bad back also (avoiding surgery for now), and did a number on it Wednesday when I tried to rescue the bulrush from the trash container sitting at the curb, waiting for the truck. DH didn't realize I was giving it to someone, and had tossed it. We have those tall trash containers that are picked up by a truck, and I had to lean into it to pick up the heavy clumps. My upper back went into spasm and I was in bad shape all day. Took some magic pills when I went to bed, slept great and woke up with just some soreness in my lower back. But for a day, I thought I might not make it to the RU.
Interesting how many of us have bad backs and just keep on agardenin' anyway. But seeing what several of you have gone through made mine seem so minor in comparison. Medical miracles indeed!

The weather is supposed to be fantastical tomorrow!! Right now at 10:48 am it is 64 degrees with 50% humidity. Supposed to get down to 50° tonight and tomorrow's high is in the mid 70s with partly cloudy skies. It just doesn't get better than that.

If any of you are planning on going to the Arts Festival, I'd suggest bringing a hat. Not a lot of shade there, and you'll be much more comfortable...

Sealy, TX

Hi, everyone!

As I've never been to a RU before, I'm wondering how ya'll's plants are "packaged"? I know some things would need to be in pots, but I have crinums that I'm bringing and they've been dug up, tossed into garbage bags with a little dirt, loaded onto an 18-wheeler and shipped from Tx to CT and back again a year later and they never missed a beat! So, my question would be - would anyone be offended if I had them seperated into plastic bags w/names on them? My DH told me that was a horrible idea, that it wasn't a very "nice" presentation, etc., so I'm just wondering!

Deb

New Waverly, TX(Zone 8b)

dstar - When I go to daylily farms, they dig and put the plants in plastic bags. I would not be offended by the packaging!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

No problem. I'm digging up the yellow rainlilies tonight, wrapping the roots in some wet paper towels, and bringing them in plastic bags... Bulbs and irises are often done like that.
Crinums are tough things.

Sealy, TX

Great! Thank you ladies for your info. Now I'm not so stressed about having to "package with a bow" all my stuff! I'm looking forward to meeting ya'll tomorrow. Will we have name tags? I'm really bad at names!

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

Yes, name tags with your username and your real name.

Don't forget your cameras if you're so inclined. We'll have a post RU thread with photos.

Willis, TX(Zone 8b)

Deb - actually,....crinums can be dug...shaking the dirt loose and brought as is...and they;ll be OK for a day......wrapped in wet newspaper or paper towel is good too...in a plastic grocery bag is convenient....we're not going to complain! (smile)

Oops.....just read Ceejay's post.......I've posted redundant-Lee

Sealy, TX

No problem, Lee! And these crinums are tough as nails, so no worries there. See you tomorrow!
Deb

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)

I will coming and maybe with my wife.

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Hey AJ.. it will be good to see you and your wife... Momma isn't coming??

Beaumont, TX(Zone 9a)

Thanks Becky. Just me and my wife this time, if she deceides to come. She had knee replacement about 3 weeks ago.

College Station, TX(Zone 8b)

ok, I'm calling it again. My knees have been killing me. As much as I hate taking pills I just went to take pain meds I just went to take some and found that I'm out. Bill is coming up this weekend to help me in the yard. I can't very well tell him that I can't help out in my own yard but that I can go walking around at a round up. I've been trying to lose some weight in order to ease the load on my knees so I knew that it would hurt in the short run. But this is getting ridiculous. I bought some things yesterday at Lowes and can't even get out there to plant them. It's so discouraging.
Ceejay one of the projects that we have around here is to dig up all the copper canyons and salvia in that bed and raise it. Let's make arrangements in the next couple of weeks to meet and I'll bring them.

The Woodlands, TX(Zone 9a)

I'm sorry you're hurting so much. Take care of those knees, and we'll meet another time. If you change your mind, you know where we are. :-)

(Becky) Colmesneil, TX(Zone 8b)

Gosh AJ.. I sure hope she's doing well after the surgery.. it will be good to see ya'll!!

aww Anne.. I was looking forward to meeting you, but i understand pain, and I also understand when someone comes to help... you better take it..LOL.. you'll be missed!

I am through loading.. yay!!! Last call if you want anything.. I might can find a spare inch or 2 to put it in..LOL

Austin, TX(Zone 8b)

We're coming... might be a little late. Figure 3 hours from here. I'm ready for bed. Had to wait till the cupcakes cooled so I could frost them. See you tomorrow! Night, night!!!
