Snowmageddeon 2010!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I was watching the news last night they said this storm has affected 25 states and 1/3 of the population.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

I'm with you Debbie! This morning it just looks like a white wasteland out there, and I'm TIRED of it! I'm also beginning to wonder how all the shrubs that have been flattened will do once the snow does lighten up or (heaven forbid) melt... This could be the year for the overdue drastic pruning...

Holly, when you stop to consider the sheer numbers of people affected by the shutting down of our 3 major airports, and the ripple effect from that, plus the Postal Service (no mail here since Friday!), power outages, road problems, etc. it boggles the mind, doesn't it?

I'm just REALLY glad DDIL isn't due to have our first grandchild until mid-March! Of course, we've been known to have mid-March snowstorms too...

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

None of your photos are showing up on this page for me. Other thread's photos are acting wierd too.

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Same here - I think someone must be "playing" today - photos were taking a really long time to load for me this morning, now some of them aren't showing at all and I've seen a few other quirks as well.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

LOL, I've had several days of OOOOHHHH isn't it pretty. Now I'm done and ready for crocus and spring projects. LOL

Since this snow is up to my butt, I wish I could borrow somebody's waders to go out there. Have a conference call soon, and after that I'll venture out. I think it's going to be a 3 day dig.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Yeah, What happened to my crocus picture? Well it was a just beautiful picture. LOL

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

I'm glad to hear this. I thought maybe it was my computer.

Well, The driveway is now clear. DSO came over and started working his way in from the street. I opened the garage door and started working my way out. He was out there for about an hour before I knew it. He never even called and of course, there was no path to get in. If I hadn't looked out the kitchen window, he'd have probably done the whole thing by himself. He did 3/4's, I only did a 1/4.

The walkways out front and to the mailbox can wait until tomorrow. I may even let everything go except the mail box til we get Monday's snow. This snow, which was only the snow from yesterday, required three shovelfuls to clear one foot. I swear this was more than Saturday's 2'.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Uggghhhh. I am sorry. It was a relief here at only 8 or ten inches. And the sun helped today.

Hm, someone bookamrked ladygardenersfave 'wunderground'
http://www.wunderground.com/cgi-bin/findweather/getForecast?query=21108&wuSelect=WEATHER
I do like that- lots of info , nice presentation- esp the part where it says I'll have clear or only part clouds for three days next.

We got about 20". They canceled school for tomorrow too which is weird since the roads aren't bad. and then with the other snow coming, they already have off Monday for President's Day.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

flowerjen, Maybe they're worried about melting stuff icing over? Our schools here now will be going to school on President's day, and probably into August at the rate things are going...

sally - I couldn't agree more - isn't it funny that we considered 8-10 inches or so NOT THAT MUCH!!! Talk about perspective.

Josh and I went to clean up Holly's parents this AM. It took about 4 hours with the blower. I shoveled a path onto the roof so Jamie could salt the ice damning over the north side, since ice was forming on the front walk. We tried to clean up as well as we could since more is coming Monday. Thanks to Aspen Tree Svc. A major crew has been working our area the last month or so, our power didn't even blink in the last 2 snow falls. Our roads were passable, we had some secondaries down to 1 lane due to drifting, they have to use front end loaders or backhoes to open the deep spots. Some Twp. roads remains closed. We've been fortunate not to lose power and the wind has saved us from shoveling our roofs. Hope everyone else has fared as well! I definitely will be reinforcing the barn roof this summer, I have at least 2 split beams and a small leak in the cap. Ric

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

I had been doing pretty well keeping things cleared out but didn't keep up with the last snowfall. Because it turned so cold everything is rock solid and there's no way it's going to get shoveled until it warms up a little. Long range forecast shows a promising 45 degrees a week from today so it might start melting but I suspect we're going to be looking at "white" for a long time :( I used to brag to my daughter, saying that even when we did get snow here it was usually gone in a couple of days because it melted so fast - not this year!

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

The sun has been helping quite a bit in our area. Even though I am walking around the house in trenches that are waist deep I have noticed that I can see the swimming pool the 4ft+ drift in that area is down a fit and the top of the chimera that was barely seen is now sticking out about a foot. So I do see areas that have melted back. But I agree that it is going to be weeks until most of this is gone.

That reminds me, I need to check on my Harry Lauder. I transplanted him late last fall and I hope he appreciates the insulation he's getting!

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I am sure he will... that is a medium size one.. the bigger one is at the back of the property.. and up the big slope.. would most likely wipe out trying to get back there.. and I have one smaller one buried next to the deck

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

In our county I am guessing its been 'all hands on deck' for the roads and therefore the school lots have been mostly untouched. Oh the other issue here is the side roads aka bus routes are still in bad shape.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

The main roads here are good. Schools are still off and I also thought that not all of their lots have been plowed yet. My shoveling buddy who plows for a landscaper stopped by this morning and finished digging paths for me. But even he, who usually digs nice wide paths, made narrow ones. The amount of snow is so overwhelming.

I think that I need to call the township and complain. The snow plows piled the snow up so high on the cornors of where my side street intersects with the main busy road, that you can't see over them to pull out. There's 55 mph traffic on that road and now it is quite dangerous. I'll wait until this afternoon and see if it has gone down any., The height of the snow here is shrinking and hugh chunks of ice keep falling from the roof.

I use that Wunderground site all of the time. It's much better than the Weather channel's site. What's with this upcoming storm? I keep hearing very conflicting reports on the accumulation expectations. I'm getting low on salt and the other white stuff.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

LOL... Jim tells me that this latest snowfall is known as "Snovertime" (snow overtime)

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

LOL Been watching the forecast for the next "Snovertime", I think the weathermen are hesitant to make predictions - latest report: "Snow of varying intensity" with no amounts being reported for Monday's snowfall. One of the sites I watch has increased the "chance" of precipitation from 30% to 50% over the past few days and now it's at 90% :(

Fleming Island, FL(Zone 9a)

Balt stations are snow saying 4-8" - unless the front stalls!!!!!! Then it would be more.
The front end loader was clearing out street last evening. Stopped just as it got to our house. It was amazing to watch how they can maneuver that huge machine and dump snow up on the yards.
We won't see sidewalks till June!!!!

cambridge md, MD(Zone 7a)

The trash have not been picked for over a week I am glad that we are only two people plus the kitty litter otherwise we would be overwhelmed... Yesterday they picked up the recyling I can't get to it....Some hopeful people put their trash can on the stree,t that was not picked up... who know beside mountain of snow now the city will have to deal with mountains of trash at the time.... We need a weather break and this morning does not look too promising ....

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Well the one piece of encouraging news for this morning after checking all the weather sites we visit is they're predicting temperatures of 55 degrees two weeks from today :) Rick always tells me there's no way they can predict that far in advance but anything that starts creeping into the 40's or above means the snow will melt! You might be surprised Qwilter to see sidewalks "before" June :)

Lexington, VA(Zone 6a)

Our trash isn't picked up here but it's usually an easy stop on the way to town to throw it into the county dumpsters. However, it's quickly piling up on our deck because the slope in and out of the dumpsters has been too slippery. I'm up to 7 bags at this point and unless the driveway clears soon we're going to have to drag it all up the hill just to get it into the van :(

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Last night evening news stated that there was measurable snow in 49 of the 50 states yesterday. Only state that didn't have snow was Hawaii. Should have seen those kids in Alabama playing in the snow. LOL
Yeah, Jamie has been getting a whole lot of that "Snovertime" After living at work for days he came home and could barely get into his own home. Deb had called a local guy with a backhoe and he was coming over and called back and said he couldn't do the job after seeing their driveway. So they called another guy he came and dug out a small area just big enough to park two cars and left a 9ft high pile right at the bottom of the drive. He didn't charge them just said it was the best he could do.
Stormy, Yes, Yes, Yes, I was driving around in the higher Explorer and then took out the lower Subaru and all of a sudden I couldn't see around corner. It's really bad because the roads are pretty clear so people are driving at a normal speed while I am slowly sticking my nose out there. There are some places that even in the higher Explorer I can't see over. Holly

You'll have to resort to the "New England" look this winter. Everyone used to have brightly colored styrofoam balls attached to their antennas so they could be seen coming out of those side streets!

Last time I was at Disney I pick up a few antenna characters for my car, I had just traded in cars and didn't realize there was no antenna. That makes it really hard finding your car in a crowed parking lot.

We are getting a fresh dusting today. The newspaper announced today the Lake Erie is frozen over for the first time since 1995-1996 a 241-mile stretch all ice.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Qwilter, I would love to see one of those front end loaders at work. The next town over is the county seat. It's like a mini city with narrow streets full of row homes and store fronts. They never plow their streets. This year they brought in one of those. Let's hope that storm doesn't stall.

It's supposed to be sunny here today, but it is overcast and grey. Sure looks like a snow sky to me. My neighbor had someone come to plow their drive. I was able to way lay them long enough to knock those corner piles down a foot or two. The township fines people for obstructing the view of intersections, and here their own people did it.

I'm going to have to put the trash dumpster & recycling out in the middle of the street for pickup tomorrow. The curbs are full of giant snow mounds. Whenever it's going to snow, I bring the recycling bin into the garage and wheel the dumpster from around the side to right in front of the garage door. I know that I'll always shovel out the driveway, but don't always get around to the side of the house. It makes it a lot easier to put stuff in it too, as I just have to open the garage door & lift the lid.

My giant old Norway Spruce has a couple of hugh broken limbs far up towards the top of the tree and my Birch out front has 4 completely broken trunks.

RCN, I don't think most cars have antennas anymore. Heck, I can't even find mine in the supermarket lot, what with all of the minivans blocking the view.

You know what you're right! Shows you how long it's been since I bought a new car :)

I remember some of the goofey things we used to tie on antennas when we'd go out clubbing or just driving around.
