Snowmageddeon 2010!

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Wow Ric - it began snowing VERY lightly here shortly after 4ish, and is now coming down at a good clip, but nothing like what you're getting. I think the radar shows that you guys to the north and northwest (Jill!) will get more than us this time.

I'd be happy to send it ALL your way if we could...

stormy, thanks for the update on Diane - I'm assuming from what you wrote that she has power back on???? Sure hope so! Even one day without power in weather like this would be miserable.

Here's hoping power stays on for everyone this time..........Barb

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Yes, Diva, Hart is fine, just trying today to get out & restock before this blaster. Holly, you finally got a great pix where the birds didn't fly away. Darned squirrels turned all of my feed holders upside down. Snowing lightly here.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Started here lightly around 7:15 now it's coming down like crazy! They canceled school for tomorrow.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Hi folks! Just checking in... I am snowed in at work now. I just got off duty, and I know I could get home tonight, but I work tomorrow too and I wouldn't have been able to get back in. So... I packed this morning to be stuck at work! I have a room and a bed though so it's OK. It's better than putting our only vehicle at risk, as well as my own safety. Going to bed shortly as I have to get up earlier than usual... so I can give up the room to another that would be coming off the night shift.

Wishing everyone well... stay safe, warm, and well stocked. And stay indoors tomorrow! We are to see blizzard conditions with temps well below zero by mid-morning!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

What kind of job do you have that you can stay there?(if you don't mind sharing)
Hubby used to be a fireman and they had stand by shifts when it would snow like this.

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Well... I used to be a Firefighter/Medic for the city fire department. It was NEVER fun to be out running calls in this kind of weather! I injured my back pretty severely three years ago (for those of you who remember that, hard to believe it's been three years!). I was retired, then had to find a whole new job/career. I work in a hospital... I'm an auditor of all things now.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Okey dokey, at least there's a lot of beds there, huh? and a cafeteria?
How long were you a firefighter/medic?

Fredericksburg, VA(Zone 7a)

Only three years... I loved it and wanted to be there until I retired. Well... I guess I did, but not the way I wanted to. I was a medic for eight years... did medical transport before the FD.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Yeah hubby was kicking himself he didn't go into it right out of high school but was a volunteer for 14 years and was an officer the last 3 of them.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

Checking in before I turn in too...

VWR - glad you are safe and warm and not trying to travel tonight.

flowerjen, how much do y'all have up there now?

We've got 3.5" here as of about 11 PM, and it seems to have lightened up, or is sleeting, right now. Can't tell, but it's not snowing as heavily as it was earlier. If it stopped right now, I'd be really happy!

Hope the power stays on for everyone..................Barb

Looks like a good 3" already

I am relieved that I got to my mom's to day. I took her some food, newspapers and two smiling helpers. The neighbors had done a path to the door--we widened it, cleared the whole front porch (psychological benefit as much as useful) and around back from door to trash, and cut a path through the big plow-mound at the street, and put new salt down all around to try and reduce any build up from this one. And got the TV remote reset--she just got cable and is not handy about the times when you get one thing ON and the other OFF. And got the gutter draining in front so it wouldn't drip on the porch and make a glacier. Our gutters are full of ice now too. I can reach part of mine with a bucket of hot water to melt through- that worked. On Moms I threw two cups of salt up there. A bit later we could hear the gutter flowing- cool! If you try the salt thing watch out--it may bounce off and sprinkle back down at you.

We had snow pretty thick during American Idol and Lost and have about 4 inches, but none since then. Radar showing we may be out of it for awhile and maybe catch another chunk later. PA looks like its getting more this time, and NJ. There was a big front loader working the roads in our immediate area all day. I don't know if that was the county or what. Many main roads today had disappearing lanes and short merges- still have to be one the lookout. State is getting low on salt too. We could use a break before another significant snow.

Near Lake Erie, NW, PA(Zone 5a)

We are in a system that is over the lake, the snow is very fine and wet, not the best to drive in. I canceled a Dr. appt. today it's a follow-up to my scans I had 2 weeks ago. The drive is long and DH was happy I canceled today.
The winds are predicted to pick up around the time we would have been on the road. We get a lot of drifting on the roads we know where the bad spots are but other drivers are sometimes caught by suprise, not a good situation.
Here is a website I alway check for weather conditions. Just type in your city/town on the left hand side.

Good to hear all is well at your Mom's Sally and everyone else, too. It hasn't stopped yet at least 8 new inches and no stopping or letting up anytime soon. They are predicting more snow and high winds later this afternoon. We are getting gusts and you should see the large trees swaying now. I'm gearing up to fill the feeders the number of birds at the feeders is unbelievable. I set up the Tripod in the living room these are the best I can get thru the windows.

I had been thinking recently about pruning back the butterfly bush. So glad that I didn't. I know that the birds like to perch there while they wait their turn at the feeders. There were 6 male cardinals not sure how many females and juncos plus a couple of blue jays just in the bush not to mention all the birds on the ground you can't see them all because of the snow drifts. Then there are some in the trees and bushes a bit farther away.

It's thundering and blowing like crazy here. We must have about 20 new inches on top of Saturday's. It's a total white out out there. I tried to hit the power line with the broom to snap some ice off of it. No way. It's frozen solid. The evergreens are in really bad shape. No signs of it letting up. Glad I brought all of my work home for a few days. The phones are out at my office.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

Us too- mobbed with hungry birds.
I have to think (HOPE?) that the only people out trying to drive in this are essential people WITH 4 wd. My friends DH got to the fire dept for the last storm but tore up his exhaust on the way.
We have about 9 inches of new which sounds light compared to Saturday but doesn't look light. stormyla--REALLY?? 20 more!!! How much was your Saturday? I wont ask you for any leftover attitude, you just may need it all for the next couple days.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Sal, I got 2 feet on Sat. The Philly airport got the most of any of the airports at 29" Saturday's snow had compacted down to about 15-16 inches by yesterday afternoon. Now it's unbelievably deep out there. It's a total white out. In the last hour, my windows have gotten completely caked over. I have to open the door to see out.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Uh Oh, The lights have started flickering.

Anne Arundel,, MD(Zone 7b)

ughhh. I don't like it when it sticks to the windows. Needless to say if the gods of Electricity are going to take anybody's power away, I hope its mine and not moms. I better get my lantern out cuz you know if you're ready it does not happen.

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

My neighbor just called. The power grid across the street is down.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I measured 21-23"s in a protected spot in Buddy's yard about 11/2 hours ago, my coal bin was gone in a drift, about 4'6"s. Our juniper hedge is one big drift. Here is a fair weather shot. Ric

Sally, This might give you some perspective. This part of the deck was shoveled clean on Sunday.

Further out where I didn't shovel, The snow below the table & grill has now met up with the snow on top of the table and grill. This is the only door in the house that will open.

My front door won't open at all. Had to take this through the screen. My walk & driveway had been completely clean.

We got some snow, we had a whiteout - now it looks like we're done...hubby spent 2.5 hrs shoveling and got both cars cleared off - I'm back to work and am up to my eyeballs in it - will be pulling an allnighter it looks like - ah well, cleaning can take place on Thurd nite/Friday morning, my aunt and cousin is flying in on Friday for a 10 day stay - crossing every appendage and hoping there will be NO MORE snow!!!! I need to do the tourguide thing & show them our nations capital - covered in snow! I'll load some pix I took earlier - got some pretty good ones of the birds and the whiteout :)

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Bec, Has the snow stopped yet? I think more snow is called for on Monday.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

"Our" snow stopped hours ago - and yes, more is forecast for Monday!!! Better not be another blizzard - I am sooooooo over this!!!

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Still going here. This was taken about an hour ago, the deck was cleared off around 3pm

We lost power for 4 LONG hours this afternoon - got it back around 7:30. We'd just prepared to hunker down under about 15 blankets and many layers of clothes for the night when the lights came back on. THANK YOU Dominion VA Power!!! Seriously, we were amazed that they were able to fix this relatively quickly, given the horrendous weather condtions today...

As I wandered through the house, WITH my flashlight, I was bemused to note how many times my hand went up automatically to turn light switches ON in the dark house. DUH.

I think we got a little over 10 inches, but it's hard to tell with all the blowing. Whatever it was, it is ENOUGH... Don't tell me there's really a chance of more on Monday? It's still snowing here, but very lightly. Doubt there will be much more accumulation.

Looks like you guys farther north and west got the worst of this one. Hope there were no major problems.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Glad you got your power back.

Falls Church, VA(Zone 7a)

We are too, flowerjen! It was going ot be a L-O-N-G night otherwise. We were very fortunate, and I hope everyone else is doing OK tonight too, especially Sally's Mom and any other elderly folks on their own.

Nice shots, Bec! They do capture the wild winds of today - I get cold again just looking at them! Love the junco photo - as someone said earlier, it could be a black & white picture.

Thanks for sharing. I'll look at mine tomorrow and see if there is anything interesting to add.

Sequim, WA(Zone 8a)

Last, but not least - Mama's 'little' man, can y'all say 130 lbs puppy with cabin-fever?!?!

I'm not even taking pictures of the snow any more - I just want it to go away! And yes, it looks like they're predicting another 1"-3" for here Sunday into Monday :( Talked with my daughter in Maine last night - she said it's like we've "switched" winters. It was 44 degrees there on Tuesday and they're actually seeing patches of green grass! I'd be happy to just see the temperatures rising above 35.
