Willows Greenhouse

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

It doesn't look to promising for the rest of the week. You areright it won't take to much longer and it will look like a building.

Not good weather for building, especially with nailguns. Better to wait. It's coming together! Cute photo!

Kalispell, MT(Zone 4b)

Weather is pretty good here in Maui. The flower smells are absolutely wonderful this evening. I think I smell pineapple?

Cedarhome, WA(Zone 8b)

Always my favorite part of a trip to warm climate is the initial blast of heat and first smell. Kind of melts away the tension.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Me too. The smells on the golf courses in Hawaii are heavenly. And when you step off the plane-well you just want to take off your underwear.

:) !!!

LOL Willow.

Gosh I took it off packing. I have been busy shopping and am finally done, off to the beach!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

A nice day and some progress. All the sheathing is done and the vents are in place.

Beautiful!

Oh! Very exciting!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

I get so excited when I see there are new posts on this thread!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Me too!

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

Very very nice! When do you expect it to be done?

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

So so so so cool! I swear that I am almost as excited as you are to see to see the progress. It is looking wonderful!

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Patience, Lynn, patience.

Buckley, WA(Zone 7b)

I know, I know. The older I get, the less patience I have. Plus, I have more ideas swimming through my head than ever before, just can't turn it off. Must put on my hat to stop this bombardment. (or turn off the computer)

Seriously, Willow, your new GH is so cool. We need to come christen it.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

That's a good idea.

Langley, WA(Zone 7b)

Yeah, a greenhouse warming! Gotta be careful not to smack the bottle of champagne against the glass!!!

(Judi)Portland, OR

Oh my a greenhouse warming - what a great excuse to buy plants!

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I know I must need some help arranging things in there and planting the outside. HUM!

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

And I think you'll need hanging baskets on the outside, too. Be sure Dean puts a few hangers on the greenhouse before he leaves . . .

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

I think I need to buy a bistro set for in front too.

Woodinville, WA(Zone 8b)

Yes. Keep an eye out at Costco for these in the spring.

After spending some time in my greenhouse this week, I was going to suggest to you that you not put your working table/benches in too low. My back kills me after only a short time in mine.

I have a separate potting bench outside along one side of a shed and it's at a taller height and is so much more fun to work at.

For me, I'd like my greenhouse bench to be slightly taller than a kitchen counter. But certainly no shorter. You can fit a lot more under them, too, if you make them taller. Like a garbage can full of potting mix or fertilizer or whatever. I'm going to have dh make taller legs later in the summer to get mine raised up. My old back can't take the strain anymore.

(Julie)South Prairie, WA(Zone 7a)

I totally agree with Gwen...bench height is VERY important. I have one that is just right in mine (hits me about in the high belly) and one that is a back breaker (hits me right about the hips). If I could do it over again, they would both be the level of the high one.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

That's funny. Dean and I were talking about that the other day. I have the shortest legs. Regular counter tops are to high for me to be comfortable. But I do want small garbage cans under there. Will have to do some more thinking on that problem.

Moscow, ID(Zone 5a)

Willow - wheels on the bottom of the garbage cans will make them easier to move, especially if they weigh a lot. Better for your back, too.
The higher the bench height the better - high enough to keep your back straight.

I have put a high stool in mine and it is perfect for sitting up to the bench and potting seedlings. Lovely. Willow, you will love it. Also, might I recommend looking into using the rubber covered closet shelving that is cheap and easy to install on vertical tracks. You get good use of vertical space this way, can hang your florescent lights from the shelf above each one, and can adjust them each year as you 'adjust' what you will be doing to suit your changing ideas. I have shelves that go almost to the ceiling. These are used for storage for things I don't need most of the time, like seed trays that are used only in the early spring. Here's a photo from last year. You can see the kind of shelving I'm talking about. I buy it at Lowe's. The word 'greenhouse' is not used in the marketing of it, so it's less expensive.

Melissa, you just so gave me the most awesomest idea ever! My big greenhouse is only used to overwinter plants, and I have been fighting for years to get the right shelving setup. Most commercial shelves are too "short" to fit plants in and still get them light (no WAY would I ever buy anthing with "greenhouse" on it...pay at least twice as much!). But with rebar and that shelving.... I could have DH make me just an outer frame with little "ledges" for the re-bar to sit on every six inches or so from bottom to top. Then I could just move the rebar up or down and put the shelf back on, depending on the size of the plants that I am overwintereing. Kind of like an oven rack! And I could add more shelves when I was just putting seedlings or cuttings.... THANKS!!! **skips off in the direction of the shop to suck up to her fabricating sweetie......**

HeHeHe Sounds like a plan to me.

(Sharon)SouthPrairie, WA(Zone 7a)

Willow, you will also want a container for discarded stuff ready for the compost pile. I have one on wheels in the main greenhouse and just use kitchen garbage containers for the others. We have also put in floor mats in the working area to give more rest to the poor backs.

Union, WA(Zone 8b)

Thanks for all the ideas. I do have three smaller garbage cans and one I stole from my daughter has wheels. I use it to soak pots before I wash them. Some have set in there for two years. ^_^

We have the 'glass' in, most of the roof on the front and fascia? boards on the ends but didn't have time for a picture. We went down to the clubhouse for a salmon sandwich and a board meeting. Will get it first thing in the morning.
