Willows Greenhouse

Kathy, My Diana has stayed very nice and compact this last year..... but who knows what next year may bring! I was very surprised to see that it had sent out a runner.... has yours ever done that? Maybe I planted her too deep and it is a branch coming up from below?

Janet- I adore the HL Walking stick as well, and that was my first inclination for a pot, but MY version got so big in just a couple of years (kind of like Kathy's larix!) that I would have totally regretted putting it in a pot. I did buy the red one last year though, and it is still a very manageable size and would look awesome in a blue pot.....

Katye....well said!

Buckle up (!): I want to take a cutting off of what's left of my HLWS.
Julie/anyone - any ideas on propagating?

off to check out the Larix - must have missed those along the path while looking at Shiny Things...

So Willow, you're just going to dump dirt on that cardboard and plant on top of that to smother the weeds? Sort of like lasagne gardening? I tried that one year in a spot. The weeds eventually came back but I think the biggest problem is that it abuts a lawn and the grass is what keeps encroaching over the worst. I keep wanting to put some kind of barrier between the lawn (drain field) and the 'flower' bed.

Julie - I haven't seen a runner at all on the Larix. And, too funny, my contorted filbert is staying small in its pot. I can't envision it in anything but, so I'm not sure where I'll put it.

I absolutely loved by 'Twisty Baby' contorted Robinia, but it died in the cold last year (imagine that - a Robinia). I would get another in a heartbeat if I could find it. I absolutely love locust trees.

Patricia, I've been thinking a nice 3 ft grass with interesting seedheads would look great in your container and would be relatively low maintenance.

These thread will show yall a little more about me.

I sure wish I could come, as that type of conversation is the way I grew up. When ever any of the family got together everyone talked at the same time and would break in on conversations so they could say something, cause if you were to wait till folks came up for air you would never get to talk..... I know to some folks it is considered rude to interrupt folks, but in our family that is the only way to speak. lol

How about grasses such as Golden Forest Ornamental Grass as it would flow over the container and down to the ground, almost like a waterfall.

I think I will stick to annuals. I have no place to put a tree later. Although I really like some of the ideas. The golden forest grass sounds neat.
That why you found us meadowyck--you fit right in with this bunch. I just read through your thread. WOW! You've done a super job. Hope all your troubles are behind you now. Best wishes to you and yours.

I don't know how to continue this thread and this one is getting long. If anyone wants to take on that chore, feel free to do so at anytime.

Yes Gwen, I'm will just put on inches of soil and wait until the cardboard rots down to plant anything else.

Brooksville, FL(Zone 9a)

Willow you don't have to wait for the cardboard to rot. as you saw in my thread I didn't wait. I did a tester bed before I undertook the front yard and it was with cardboard and the soil on top. by the end of the first summer I could barely find the cardboard and the worms were all over the place along with a stinking snake that kept eating my toads.... and one right in front of me.... if I had had my shovel I would have chopped that snake in half. I know snakes are good but i hate them and won't hesitate to destroy them if they hang around long enough. LOL

Meadow, wow, what a difference in your house from the 'before' to now! I like your choices of plants, too - we have the same taste. I also really like your front walkway with the stones.

What an amazing transformation, Janet!! It all looks so good, the way you laid out the beds, the plants, the pathways. I"m sorry you had all the health problems (that can really take a huge toll), and I hope you are doing better now.

I love your Collies too. They are surely beautiful dogs.
