Shes about too... #48

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

That is a real beauty! Would love to have any you can root, Let me know on the postage please?
Thanks

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

When I first joined DG I received a package from someone and I'm embrassed to say I don't remember who that person is, but there was this root thing in the box. I planted it and now it is blooming. It's a 4 O'clock. The leaves are lime green with little dark green spots and the flowers are just getting ready to open. I'm growing it in bathroom for now.

So to the wonderful person who sent me this great plant Thank you and I'm sorry I didn't acknowledge the gift at the time.

Marti

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Marti, 4 o clocks come in many colors, and they can be invasive, but so pretty. When outside, they will bloom in the afternoon, and then watch for the pea size seeds, they will be black, you can let them drop if you want more plants.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Thanks. I'll be looking for seeds. I've several things like the 4 o'clocks that can be invasive. I'm thinking about putting them in an area that I have that will just let them go wild.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I'm so proud that I found my pictures I just put in the computer. Don't know if I'll ever figure out where I put them.

Love the multi colored sweetpeas, they are so pretty. Save me some seeds please?

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

ohhhs I love those sweet peas.. more pictures plz...
Marti did I send you some stuff? I know I sent out some tubers this past fall with other stuff..
I collect 4 o clocks.. the more the better.. I have my regular ones up against all the back of the house for the fragrance..
Joyce let me see if I can refresh your memory.. you gave Bonnie the ginger, you gave me a kind of plant that grows in or around water like a pond plant.. it has a stringy top LOL here it is in the middle there in front of the light... Now if this is a ginger, that is way cool..

Debra your picture looks like my garage. It is a jungle out there. Brugs everywhere and someone gave me a ginger for Christmas. It is growing like crazy even though the light is bad. Be curious to see what happens to it when I put it out.

Does anyone have experience with brugs and deer?? This winter is going to be the winter that keeps on giving I fear. The deer are out there everyday under the bird feeders scratching in the snow to find something to eat. I just know that when things start coming up there is no way I will be able to keep them out of it. Thus my question about the brugs. I was going to plant them in the ground this year as opposed to the pots to try to reduce the watering. They never bothered them last year, but I have a feeling they will be desperate this time around. Already my shrubs and azaleas are looking pretty bad from 3 feet of snow piled on them. I truthfully don't have the heart to fight it much. This winter has sucked the very life out of me. :(

I have heard that some brugs are deer resistant, but don't recall which ones. We don't have any deer here, so I don't know that answer.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Linda Kay, I am quite forgetful, so email me in April and I will send you a start of my coleus. Please don't feel bad reminding me I really appreciate when folks do that, I do not take offense at all!
Speaking of memory....LOL Debra that is umbrella palm, if you like it you would love dwarf giant papyrus, I will have to start one for you.
Neener, Missouri deer do not eat them, roses on the other hand seem to be quite popular...LOL I had my brugs all over the yard this summer and none of them were bothered.....my roses on the other hand were quite tasty! LOL

Yes you sent me things. Maybe your the nice person who sent me the 4 O' Clock. I am so sorry I didn't notify you that you package arrived. The 4 O'clock is doing just great and is blooming. It seems to love the bathroom and is about 2 feet tall. The leaves are lime green with dark green spots. The flowers are just starting to open and look dark pink. After it blooms should I pinch it back or just leave it along?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I received a bulb one time and lost the tag from the person who sent it to me. I finally got around to planting it not having any idea what is was or from who.
So it started growing and it was the strangest thing I had ever seen and it kept getting bigger and bigger so I posted it on the tropical site. Well those nice folks told me it was a voodoo lily. Well the sweet person who sent it to me, posted and said I was the one who sent it and it was sweet AuntB (Bonnie) LOL. I was so glad it was a friend who understood me....LOL

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

four o clock flowers only last for the day, maybe two, and they will fall off by themselves. No pinching needed! If you pinch, the seeds will not form.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Being as how its in the bathroom with no bees or anything to spread pollen, I wonder if I"ll get any seeds. Will have to wait and see.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I have a buddah belly plant indoors that blooms all the time and it still sets seeds. So something must be spreading the pollen, (furnance (air), a fly, stray lady bug) I don't know but it does set seeds.

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

So maybe I'll get seeds. Well, I'll keep watch on it.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Prolly not get seeds unless you do have a few fungus gnats, they pollinate my morning glorys here in the basement.
Neener, I understand how u feel.. I am so tired from winter and work, that here I have a day off and all I want to do is sit.
Marti, can you take a picture? the spots on the leaves are throwing me off right now.. lets see it to be sure it is indeed a 4 o'clock. I can tell you it will keep going upward if you don't pinchit, and it will bloom all summer and set a kazillion seeds once you get it out there.. I like to pinch them to get them to branch out. It sounds like my lime light.. anyway, here is one of the many colours I have that come back in the same location for me..

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Hey Debra I know the feeling. Somedays all I can manage is just "sit". Unfortunately today wasn't one of those days. I had 2 days worth of stuff to do in one day. Then I got to the houses that I check on for people who are out of town. Well one of them had run out of propane and there was no heat. So...I had to call the owners in Florida and get the info. Then get the gas company out there to refill (which they didn't do because there was still some snow on the dome for the tank) and then they had to relight all the pilots. So I spent 2 hours in this freezing cold house trying to get this taken care. But hey, it's what they pay me for. It just sort of ticked me off at the gas company because I had to shovel out the opening for the tank so they could connect. Took me all of 3 whole shovels full of snow while the guy stood there and watched. You would of thought they could have handled that. ;0)

Joyce good to hear about the brugs. Mine have been out 2 summers and the deer haven't bothered them either, but I figure things are going to be pretty dire this year. They are really hungry out there. I'm sure I won't have a rose or a daylily all summer. Such is life. It was their home before it was mine.

Look what I bought this week-end, my very first camelia, a real pretty dark pink one!
Can anyone tell me about them, how big do they get? This was in a gallon pot, and it is already about 4 foot tall.

it is pretty.. have a friend in AR that grows those.. you can find him here:
http://seedexchange.multiply.com/photos/album/185
his name is Frank and he is a DG member but have no clue what is his user name..

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

I don't know about how big it will get in Tx, but there is a garden in Calif where they have them and they are never trimmed except for dead branches and most of theirs are over 10 feet tall. Some of the realy old ones are at 20 feet. They are growing under Calif live oaks as in Calif they perfer filtered sun. The place is called Descanso Gardens and is in the La Cresenta/Montrose area.

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh my, maybe I can keep mine trimmed, or will have to move it so it can grow! I hope they can take this Texas heat?

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

The thing I really hated out there was some people plant them and than have them trimmed like a hedge. The plants try to bloom, but don't do well because of the trimming thats done. I mean, come on guys these are not hedge plants. Leave it along to bloom.

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Pretty pretty, I need to move south! :C

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I do hope I get some sweet pea seeds, the vines are higher than the gate so unless I grab on to the sky hook they may be drooping all over. Had a little rain today and boy do they grow fast then. Had a neighbor once, about 40 years ago, who had them gowing all over the side of his fence. I believe there was a big tree that shaded them. Mine are out in the morning sun, so far so good.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Oh you will love love love those sweet peas, I know I do.. mine grow in the full sun vine corner with all the other vines. Yours will be fantastic!

Who is awake at this hour....LOL

Somerset, KY(Zone 6b)

Good morning Anyone up and about?

(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Goodness, everyone is up late!
Beautiful pictures, they are so pretty!
Hope your snow is melting?

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

We stayed up way toooo late last night...LOL
Dragging brugs out and washing off the stupid spider mites.....ughhhhhhhh I need spring.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

morning.. since I had to work at the Garden Show all weekend, I had to stay up late to clean, prune and what not in the Garden down stairs. Hope you all have a wonderful Sunday!

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

I heard Wichita has a really nice garden show. I hope to make it there one year. Did you get any cool stuff?

I yank everything out of the solar room and washed it all down and scrubed and clean.....my my. Felt good to be outside and do something. I have a brug blooming and it smells so good at night. One of the brugs that has not bloomed, never seen a bloom I thought ok you are out of here, well guess what I found 2 little buds, good thing cause I have had it over a year and not one bloom! I thought I had been pretty patient with it. waiting and waiting.

Got half of the garden room clean, now I just need to finish the room. Bought some bulbs, dahlias and lilies I want to get started indoors for our plant sale in May. Very nice productive vacation for two days, now back to work.

Have a great one everyone. Rain expected here which we don't need the ground is saturated with snow water now.....worried about my iris if it doesn't dry out. I removed all the leaves yesterday and stuff so they would be exposed to the air and sun.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

mornin' hey Joyce, good job on the clean up work! I have never grown iris so this will be a first year for me with the iris corms that I got at RU last year.
those white ones took like 8 yeARS LAST YEAR SO i WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE ONE BLOOM. oops
anyway, didn't buy anything at the Garden Show.. I just worked it.
Looks like it could shower here today.. Off to work I go hi ho..

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Debra, I love iris. They are sooo beautiful and just bloom their hearts out and beautiful colors. Course I live by an iris farm so that is way bad/good for me. Course I haven't met a plant I didn't like.

Didn't you get any freebies for working? Our garden show is really getting bad, every year it is less and less and more about food processors, jacuzzi's, and decks.

Kind of like hgtv not much gardening on there any more. We have disconnected fromt he satellite world as of today......I don't think I watch much on it, but we will see.....LOL

Have a great day ladies.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Joyce I went to the garden show back home with my Mom on Friday. I've never seen such boring "gardens". I know it is early, but the best they could do for color was azaleas and daffodils. Lots of hardscapes. Did get my picture on the front page of the paper though. :))

http://www.ydr.com/ci_14520537

If we didn't have satellite such as it is here, we wouldn't have TV. There will probably never be cable out here. Too far from the source. Ain't country living grand!! Living here always reminds me of "Green Acres"...

Neener

Kansas City (Joyce), MO(Zone 5a)

Know what cha mean about "Green Acres", there are times I love it (weekends) and times I hate it (commuting to work or anywhere!).

We are just going with plain old regular tv no cost. We do need an outside antenna tho. We are out in the country but on top of a hill and luckily we do get DSL by the skin of our teeth.

Are you in the hills or mountains of VA? Satellite is a saving grace, even in the ozarks of missouri which is hilly.

I really don't watch much tv, love LOST, and then on Sunday I will watch Desb. Housewives, and Sisters and Brothers, but that is honestly all I can tell you is on. Imagine I might check into netflicks...now that spring is coming (hopefully) I won't care about that until winter sets in again.

FLOYD, VA(Zone 6a)

Joyce where our house is situated, there is a big "hill" behind it, so we just barely get sat. with all the trees.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I really could live without TV, cell phones and stuff.. I kinda like my lap top tho...;)))) this Eagle was right across from me in one of the Garden Displays.. its name is Callie

Thumbnail by joeswife
(Linda Kay) Amarill, TX(Zone 7a)

Oh my, isn't he beautiful! Hello Callie!
Well, I have been ever so carefully trying to get my brugs to root, but just about all of them are now all mush. I had a t least 80 cuttings from ine last year, and what you all have sent, and maybe 10 have growth on them. So sad!
So I am asking one more time for anyone that may have extra's. I will gladly send you postage.
Thanks
LK

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

Linda, didn't you send me some cuttings? I thought you did, but if not, I have several rooted, just need postage money, sorry.. I am broke. ( I have been helping out unemployed children for about half a year now) they finally all have jobs, but it took alot out of pocket to maintain their homes and cars. sheesh!

a Garden Show display by my area..
