Merremia siberica is now vining.. gosh.. I have alot of species plants going here, but pandurata and bindweeds from buffalo are still not doing anything. I bet they needed stratifying. I am stratifying another few right now, this is their third week in the cold and dark. I will bring them out at the end of the month and try them too. You guys if I sent you any pandurata, please be sure to refrigerate them for a few weeks. native kansas ones are used to being frozen for while.
Group Seed Swap Discussion2
Becky, do you start yours out in smaller containers too?
would it be easier if we did this on another forum ;) and if so, which one? instead of two places?
I started doing taxes and working on a b'day present so I havent planted the first thing yet.
and i got a wild hair to make bread. =) omg. i wish i could share it with ya'll.
Fresh baked bread sounds really good. I haven`t planted a thing but sure I could eat a slice of bread and butter. Karen
how come everyone stopped talking?
is everyone you know where?
well, drum roll, ...... I have two MGs up!! wooohoooo
I planted Mauve Splash first and then Tie Dye, but Tie Dye came up first.
Phyllis.. I got your envelope for the yellow primrose.. ;)
good. After I sent that, i thought about other stuff I should have sent you.
no hurry either..its still winter.
Oh My goodness.. unless it is an envelope to stuff full of seeds, I sure do not need anything else right now! LOL
I have about 8 or 9 different MG germinated, also both white and lavender moonvine.
That is fantastic, Nicole.. I can't wait to see them! ;D
Bet you are having fun too!
I love it! Can not wait for snow to stop falling and temp to rise so I can plant them!!!
Phyllis - Congrats on the MG sprouts! Watch the watering, girl! :-)
Debra - You would probably win hands down on who has the biggest variety of living plants! LOL!
Congrats, Nicole! Keep us posted on your new babies!
I finally got my rear in gear and planted 18 MG seeds. Hopefully they will all germinate. Got some exciting ones sowed. Fingers crossed!
i just saw 2 wilted. I must have overwatered them. :( I hope I have enough seed to replace those.
awwww Nicole.. ... I know how you feel... I just dug up my albevenia from last year and it had such a nice tuber going.. I just planted two more in the same container... I over watered that one for sure.. If it is a special seed let me know I might have one or two to spare..
Becky, I am going to Use your tub idea, when I move the pond form that is down in the corner of the basement filled with soil, to the back corner patio, I am lining those tubs up around it in between the cement cinder blocks and some large lime stones to put plants around there to give me my room effect. The pond will have a pump sand and I am getting me a couple of goldfish. Right now those tubs I collected are full of sand..:P~ My son has been nice enough to take them to his beach and fill them up for me. I am making a mini raised beach for the Beach morning glorys this year. Plan on decorating his place even heavier down by the lake area. I found some cool looking black, blue, and white plastic trash vans in a nice curved shape and I think I will have those filled with glories in the middle going up natural branches, and then impatiens and petunias around the bottoms, along with some trailing sedum and I. Batatas.
I think I should have enough seeds to start some more. I have so many from the swap that I don't feel so bad if these didn't work out.
ok i wonder IF blowing in the baggie give the sedling Co2 as opposed to oxygen sa plantlike carbon monoxide, maybe using breath on sedlings is real tip that should be used as regular as possible?? In private of course...OK, back to earth the lights in the bathroom are calling me to water seedlings! THESE were all the same seeds, i know i put ONLY one type in the container, waiting to add another sprouted variety later; however the preleaf (forgot techy term mow, am tired!...and LAZY) are diffeerent: there are pointed and rounded ones. any ideas? HMPH.
Darren - You cotyledons do look different. Are you sure that you planted all the same cultivar/species in your container?
I think I'm not holding my mouth right.
Ive planted 3 seeds and two have already wilted down. but I'm not giving up.
i'm just going to pay attention more!
I finally planted the Jasmine from Nicole and the next day the leaves fell off.
it had LOTS of roots, so I think it will be ok, but cross yer fingers for me.
and its mid march already! how did that happen????
I ran across some pictures of my WS from last year dated April 10...yikes.
nannie the jasmine will be OK. If you kill it, just let me know and I can send you another cutting.
That jasmine has gone dormant I bet, just let it be, don't over water it, mine loses its leaves in the winter even in the basement garden, but it is blooming right now..
As far as cotelyns falling, try mixing a bit of cinnamon in the soil amd seep a bag of camomile tea, and use that to add to your watering can .. works for me..
never heard of that. what does cinnamon or chamomile do for the plants?
the leaves fell off, but I can see new growth on the jasmine.
I think it's ok still.
i didnt know that about cinnamon either
Me either. I'll have to remember that! Will make it smell nice, too! LOL!
hmm. have to go get some. I don't have any cinnamon but nutmeg. :)
I get mine at the dg for 2 for a dollar, I blow it on everything.. sprinkle on the pots surface and stuff. Someone on a different forum told me about last year when I was fighting fungus gnats. Also, the tea acts as an antifungal and mold preventer. I am growing camomile this year and will use the leaves to make my own tea.
all my tomatoes are about 6 inches tall now.. peppers are right behind them, my okra and bean plants are up, all the petunias are up and some are ready to go into the petunia basket now.. I saved the seeds from the basket my DD got me last year for mothers day..
here is a shot of my tomatoes and mgs together..
please read here about the Cinnamon.

It's fantastic for US so its gotta help the plants, lol.. like Rosemary helping preserve meat or lavender as an antiseptic. Cinnamon is fantastic. I have at least a teaspoon every day~
cheers
:Darren
Darren & Debra - VERY interesting!!! I wished I had the time to study herbs and plants as used in medicine. I'd rather take a herb supplement than a prescription drug. Less side-effects. That's what people used for thousands of years before the pharmaceutical companies came along.
my parents and grandparents grew up drinking stuff from herbs. I remembered going to an herbalist and they would mix them some stuff and put them in paper and wrapped them up.
my aunt is a heavy believer in herbs and teas...I just dont know enough.
maybe next week things will get back to normal and I can finally start more gardening.
my uncle's funeral was today but we still have family in town ( flying out monday and tuesday). i just want normal. boring old normal. and sleep.
{{[Hugs}}} I am so very sorry that you lost your uncle so unexpectedly like that! I hope the funeral gave you some peace or you find some inner peace as Spring arrives. I am a woman of faith and Spring ... in my mind ... is God's way of telling us that after death their is renewal in Heaven. Just like everything dies in Winter only to return in Spring more beautiful than ever. I know that you will miss him. That is the hardest part for those they leave behind. It may really hit you after everyone returns to their homes and you have time to think about everything. The memory of my Mother's passing is still very vivid in my mind. It has been over a year, but it hasn't gotten much easier yet. I miss her very much. Phyl - YOU and your extended family are in my prayers. I pray that God blesses you with peace and gives you comfort as your mourn your loss.
well said Becky.
Very well said! I agree with every word you said too. With all the family in town, it seemed like every word that came out of my mouth had something to do with my Mom.....mom said, mom did it like this, mom, mom, mom. in August it will be 3 years and I STILL miss her terribly. I wish I could say that part will get easier for you Becky, but my aunt who is 80 something says she STILL misses her mom who died 55 years ago. But, the memories get better. and you will smile when you think of her. that part gets easier.
My uncle was a bargain shopper. And he was the greeter at WalMart too. So to everyone that he knew, and this is a small town, he would always say 'come here' and have a coupon or an ad he'd show them with something on sale so WM could 'comp' the same price. I have heard SO, SO many stories about things he did for other people, including a man who was getting birdseed for his mom, so my uncle got her email address and sent her a bunch of stuff that she could get for free as well as links to birdwatching sites. like one that he tried to get as many to do (that I never did) by watching birds on certain weekends and counting birds and which kinds were seen. His house is full of stuff he'd get on sale. I'd find stuff on my porch that he'd drop off for me, and so on. Well, at the end of the funeral service, my dad, the Big ham that he is, stood up, spoke a bit and invited people back to the church for a lunch they were preparing for us, and then he said " oh, and another thing, Food City has ice cream, buy one, get one free....." and the funeral ended on a happy, funny note.
which is how Charlie would have liked it.
(know you know where I get MY sense of humor from, lol)
((((hugs)))) to all. now i need another tissue =(
awww phyllis, that was such a nice thing to read. I am sorry for your loss, I know you will miss him alot. Isn't it great tho, that we can have great memories to get us thru the hard times? It is so cool your Uncle had such a great personality, and I bet it runs in the famliy...
Phyl - Your uncle sounded like he was a wonderful and caring man. He will surely be missed by many, many people! Loved what your dad said to cheer everyone up at the funeral. How appropriate indeed! This must be very hard for your dad, too.
{{{Hugs}}}
Blessings sent your way and hugs too.
Hang in there....
phyllis, that was a wonderful story, reminded me of the the "yellow shirt", another one I just love that always brings a tear. Thanks for sharing.
((((hugs, ladies)))) well, part of a funeral should be to celebrate that person's life...they shouldnt be so solemn. i think (shrug) his granddaughter spoke too and made us laugh a few times. and cried.
we took a road trip to Lowe's yesterday...then chinese for dinner. it was a good trip. he told the lady at Lowes that he had one foot in the grave and the other foot on a banana peel. he's fixed all his insurance policies to change beneficiaries to us (he still had my mom on them). I need to follow his example and get a living will made.
Becky, he's doing as well as can be expected. There's a lot of questions about the sequence of events and he's pretty angry. and the Dr who did the cath is also my dad's dr so he's unsure whether to go back to him. but he's been his Dr since 1986. But...when he came in to tell us what had happened, the Dr didnt even recognize my dad.
not sure what I think about that.
oh, and, Hey Charlene, did you know there's a Mules Day Fesival in Columbia, TN coming up soon? a 3 or 4 day thing. looks like a pretty big event? someone in the TN gardening forum mentioned it. lemme know if you are interested and I'll send the link.
I would love to have the link. Probably won't make it this year but maybe next. I love Mule Days, anywhere.
I have several people from the horse club that will go. They drive wagons. What fun, it i. have you ever been there?? Nice people and all kinds of mules...Thanks Nanny.
I think Naomi Judd is the Master of Ceremonies or the parade or something.
if they love mules, they gotta be good people, right? =) =)~
