Daily Pics Vol 278

Cramlington, United Kingdom(Zone 8a)

Time for a new thread. We came from here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1070430/#new

Some wonderful shots as always from our DG birders.

In the UK we had quite a sustained period of freezing and snowy weather in early January which is unusual, especially as the temperatures got down to around -10-15C.

Here's a group of birds at my feeder, goldfinches, dunnock and blue tit.

Wonderful shot Knip! I love the Blue Tit. Thanks for starting the new thread!! Sorry about your weather.

From the last thread:

Duc, Loved your pics. The Titmouse and others were beautiful!

Tonasket, WA(Zone 5a)

Thanks for the new thread and the Blue Tit.

Duc, Your pictures great, when are you sending those birds on north to my area. Have plenty of Goldfinches. Just attached new net socks filled with nyjer seed so they will be happy. Our snow is mostly melted and gone and my private lane is passable now without water splashes.

Nice start to the thread, knip. Over here, there was extensive TV coverage of your weather, including reports of a huge increase in broken bones from falls in the icy conditions. Wild stuff.

GP, that is a wonderful shot of the woodpecker telling you off.

Duc, from the previous thread, that Oak Titmouse photo is so beautiful.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

kniphofia - Thanks for starting the new thread. Based on past experience, it won't take long for this one to run it's course.

That's quite an assembly at you feeder. I think my favorite is the blue tit.

I'll not take the time to actually speak to the many photos on the last thread - but they are really nice. In my opinion, many are "field guide" quality.

It is supposed to be sunny sunny tomorrow, so I'll be out with the camera. I re-filled several of my feeders this evening.

I didn't know that wps ate lizards, or do they just catch them?

Melbourne, FL

He took it around behind the pole and sure looked like he was pecking at it.

South Hamilton, MA

strange, but we don't have the lizards here

Grand-Falls, NB(Zone 4a)

Knip, It's been a while, since I've seen your Blue Tit, and your Goldfinch. Thanks for posting them again. It made a great opening to the new thread.
Lots of wonderful shots as well, on the last thread.
GP, Looks like, your RBWP had a good chapter to tell you!!! Love that shot. :)

A Blue Jay trying to decide, to which feeder to go too.

I didn't think the Purple Finch stayed in the area in winter, but I was wrong, I found this one, near a wooded area.

I was wondering if any of you birdwatchers subscribe to Wild Bird or other birdwatching magazines? A child is selling magazine orders for a school fundraiser. I haven't read any before.

Thanks,
Teresa

I get Wild Bird and enjoy reading its articles and seeing contributions of fellow subscribers. However, there's another mag I enjoy even more and that is "Birds and Blooms". The one I am looking at now, as I type this, is the Feb/Mar Issue whose cover features a pic of a Bluebird, with the caption Welcome Spring.

I like Bird Watchers Digest and Backyard Birds newsletter.

Norman, OK

Enjoyed the English birds. One of the great things about this board is seeing the birds you can't see in person.

I've been traveling so don't have any new pics. In TX for a week. Here is a Chipping Sparrow from last week.

I too am a BWD subscriber. The cover art they use is spectacular. It has a good mix of interesting, informative articles for the amateur birdwatcher without being too technical. Birds & Blooms has outstanding photography as well as interesting articles and ideas for homeowners. They welcome subscriber input.

Hey did anyone see the Audubon Magazine with the photo contest winners? lovely.

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

Thanks for the wonderful new start Knip. Your birds are beautiful. Hope it warms up for you soon.

Donna, I've told the birds you said it's safe now to travel! LOL

GP, great photos, especially that one of the wp "too close". Thanks for my fav-the grackle! Love that attitude look.

Hack, after you've enjoyed that sun for a day would you mind sending it my way? I'm so tired of taking pictures from inside the house.

Burn, that jay sure is a pretty one. I like the starlings, but am only seeing a handful of them. Pretty goldfinch.

Teresa, I subscribe to Birds and Blooms and Birds and Blooms Extra-love the photos and information.

Red, your sparrow is pretty.

Mrs Ed, I got that Audubon magazine and really enjoyed the photos.

Still raining here and the lake is rising beautifully, but the poor birds.....

duc, thanks for spreading the word.

I have subscribed to all the bird magazines listed above for many years, and read them all. Think maybe my favorite for info is BWD.

Not many wild birds here yet for the season, but had to laugh at one of my two guineas this morning. It was on top of my redwood fence (around the entire 2 acres to prevent deer access). really talking, I don't know what had caught its interest. Stayed there fo quite a while then decided better to return to garden.

Finally a blue sky, lot's of birds in and out at the feeders. The only birds I was able to get a picture of so far today is a hawk and blue jay. I'm enjoying all the photos that are being posted, I just love the Red bellied with the lizard, that was just too cute!

Thumbnail by misseymarie

I doubt if the lizard thought that it was cute.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

ducbucln, the weatherman LIED. It's been heavy overcast all day and is to rain tomorrow.

But today, I did add 1 GB of RAM to my Dell Dimension 2400 desktop computer. It was REAL easy to do. My Dell came with only 256 MB of RAM, no wonder my computer was slow. I wanted 2 gigs (my max), but Office Depot only had one, they were on sell. It was a Kingston 1GB DDR PC3200, 400MHz and comes with a Lifetime warranty. This 1 GB module has made a great difference in the speed of my machine - it is a LOT faster. Now, I'm really looking forward to getting that 2nd gig module, to see it go even faster.

BTW, I'd forgotten, I too, get Bird Digest.

Putnam County, IN(Zone 5b)

Knip...love the opening shot! Thanks for the new thread.

GP, great catch on the RBW with the lizard!

Well I must be in a really bad moon phase here...Turns out they sent camera to the wrong place city. It is in Seymour Indiana across the state. Don't know HOW they did that! Anyway it should arrive next week. They say we may get some sun next week too. Well see.....

Manzanita, OR(Zone 8b)

So sorry to hear that Nanny. Talk about being let down after being so excited.
Hack, sorry about your weather.

Columbus, GA(Zone 8a)

Well, I made the most of today, lousy as it was. Saw 17 different species of birds in about 1.5 hrs.

I sure was surprised to see this American Robin here, is it spring, yet..
