Garden Projects - 2010

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yes, they love those fresh green new sprouts don't they? I think I heard Sophie mutter something about them being the MOST "Tender vittles" of all. LOL

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i think the bunny was eating my cukes last year - until the urine went out

South Hamilton, MA

DH has used fox urine in chipmunk holes. Drove them from iris bed into the grass which while not gone, a preferable site for holes.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Sorry to hear about the %^#@ stone Bill, I how frustrating that can be.This winter has not been kind to some of my stones. All the moisture and sever cold has been causing a good bit of flaking and cracking. Some of the brick surfaces will need to be reset as well because of heaving and settling. The to do list just keeps getting longer. Ric

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i have thought of a temporary solution for my stone mushroom(s) - have have a couple white oaks i still need to cut up from last years ice storm laying into the wet lands - i will use some of the branches that are about 4" around for the stem's - now i need one more mushroom cap to make three - i will set them at different heights - with the cold front coming end of this week the ice should thicken - almost went to my knee a few minutes ago:)

should be easier now that i know that granite saw blade works pretty good - i will cut down a lot on the chipping on the underside to hold the cap. i will grab stone stems as i find them which could take years.

will also make a stone bird bath out of some nice large granite boulders (barely fit them in the wheel barrel sideways and muscled them upright, let alone carry them in the wheel barrel). Will cut 2" deep cross cuts with the blade and chip out the inside. that will have to wait till spring when the snow melts.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sounds like a good solution Bill. I will be wanting to see that birdbath when you get it done, sounds really nice.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

sorry to hear about the mushroom stem wha :( Maybe it was spreading spores? Can't wait to see the fabby new shrooms with wooden stems. What is your bird path for? Is it a path for birds to walkabout on? Most of the birds here prefer to fly but maybe if I had a bird path they might walkabout more hmmmmmm.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

balderdash! another typo!

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

ROTFLMAO---Sorry I was doing REAL good till I read Dnut ask about the bird path!
Anyway sorry your stem broke, still want to see what you come up with with the white oak base & how it turns out, heads look cool, lot's of work you have chipped out for yourself:)Anita

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I need a nap. This is too tiring for me!
Seriously, though, Bill. It's a wonderful thing you do.

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I want a bird path
dnut you're always good for a laugh

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I have a brilliant plan for where mine is going to go debilu. It's going to be aerial. Very Jetsons.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Oh, Man I want a Jetson's Bird Path!!! I want it NOW!!

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

So glad I wasn't drinking anything when I read bird path. I actually busted a gut laughing. Oh my, I can hardly see for the tears.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Oh my gosh, too funny!!!!!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

You guys are a riot. But good news Dnut, we have one already. It is called the NE Flyway, but all those honkin' geese are road hogs and you have to watch out down below for the back fires. Hard hats required. ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sadly, there is a bird path, as the passengers on the Hudson flight learned last year.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

just cut a wide bird path in the wet lands in back while cutting up a 100 ft white oak that fell during last years ice storm - it was pretty rough going walking through the snow and climbing through the brush to get to it all - was able to cut most of it up some in frozen in the water - and got some pretty good looking stems for the mushrooms - all have nice rough bark and are covered in lichens - should do the trick - and picked up a third mushroom cap today - they should look good in a small grouping

still need to get the second half of the tree out of there as well as the canopy of branches - two or three smaller trees got hit by it on the way down and they will need to come out too - and there is one more good sized oak to chop up on this side of the pond.

there are a couple on the other side which will be for next year - need to spread out my hardwood supply for the fireplace.

Corning, NY(Zone 5a)

Will the mushrooms be on or just near the bird path? jk, can't wait to see your pics of them:)Anita

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

excellent question of where they will end up haven't decided yet

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Methinks the mushrooms would make good owl roosts near the bird path. The owls will like to roost and watch the other birds on their walkabouts.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

pretty sure they will be going in this bed here taken in 08

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

your beds are so pretty!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Too dang neat!! Bill is a type AAA personality gardener.^_^

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

I know I couldn't be that neat

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

That's how hubby likes it(garden wise that is) otherwise he's a slob ☺

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

come on - the grass needs to be cut - the butterfly house is tilted (and gone now as is the spruce) and there are not stone mushrooms yet:)

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

oh geeze

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I know. That ruined it for me too.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Wha, I think that is the perfect spot except for perhaps in my Japanese Maple Bed. Thanks, I'll pick it up next time through. I just ordered a couple new Japanese Maples from Topiary to replace a couple I lost to my being unable to water last summer. Patti

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

what did you order patti?

The Monadnock Region, NH(Zone 5a)

I guess I should get busy chipping away at the ice if I want to have a garden as nice as Bill's!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Looks like a good spot for the shrooms. Maybe you could leave a few stray leaves or weeds here and there, so the rest of us won't feel so bad. ^_^

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Looks like the perfect spot for those shrooms.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

That IS the perfect spot for shrooms! LUV the pickety fence. Where is that bed wha? I can't place it in your garen. I am SO looking forward to visiting everyone's garden when we roadtrip around the NE cuz I have mind map designs from the pics everyone posts that are probably SO not right. wha you are too persnickety IMPO. When I visit your garen I will dump a bag of leaves and let them blow around willynilly (and then run really fast ^_^)

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

It is great Bill. The slope, stone, wooden fence, plants make a great combo.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i will catch you dnut and you will pick them up - lickity split or no chocolate!
thx dave
first bed i made here when we moved in - back yard to the side - it now has three jm's in front of it to the left and the rock i moved this past fall for the bonsai is in front of it to the right side.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

You wish wha. HA! I can SO run really fast. Sides I am bringing Bernard Callebaut chocolate with me. You are certainly free to not want any of my chocolate due to leafage upset. The more the merrier for other merriers as I always say ^_^ Are you going to be so grumpy about it that you won't come to Pixie's for Woodstock? Victor is going to play Smoke on the Water and maybe Come on Baby Light My Fire. O WOW missing great chocolate AND Woodstock. Bummer but I guess if one is persnickety they must stick to their persnicketyness values. I respect that inside voice is saying, " Loser, Loser, Loser"

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Ah! Ha ha ha ha!!! "Lickety-split or no chocolate!"

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

forgot that you were bringing goodies - be a nice little dnut and leave the leafs home

as a side note - my sister's boyfriend finds humor in throwing trash in my yard that i have to pick up - he does not know how short his life could be - i find zero humor in it
