Coming from here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1053394/

The last thread was getting long. Here is the rock i am using for a mushroom cap.

And this is the underside. I've chipped into the rock 2 1/2" so far. The rock (stem) it will sit on is about 4x5" and comes to a point at one edge. That is the reason i have created the triangle like hole in the bottom. I am having trouble getting the cap to sit flat because of the angle's involved - so the plan is to chip out the whole 4 - 5 area i have marked up and flatten the "stem" this spring. Will hopefully have a nice stone mushroom when done.

This is going to be very nice when you get it done. Sounds like a much easier thing to flatten the stem rather than trying to match up angles with a point.

'Where's Bill?'

'He's working on his mushroom cap.'

Hmmm.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

yup - have to stay busy - chipping out the rest of the stone for a 4x5 flat indent should be easier as i can use a larger chisel and make for a more stable cap ounce the stem is also chipped off flatter.

i would like to point out the cap - although not perfectly round (which i kind of like) it does have a lot of character with moss and lichens and very weathered granite - what really made me choose this one other than the look of the top is that the edges are rounded to the bottom with no sharp edges - i have another top in "reserve" if i mess this up that has sharp edges.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Cool, can't wait to see it.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

I agree that will make a great mushroom cap. Looking forward to seeing more pics as it progresses. Holly

South Hamilton, MA

Knew that the snow would not save the rocks from being bothered this yr.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

Nice rock Bill!

Have you always been into shrooms?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

what ever do you mean dave - have them with steak, chicken, and pork

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Always been happy with my mushroom head.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

But no one else has been?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Why ask?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Sorry - should have said - why would I even ask?!!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

is it done yet?

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

funny joann - i did get about another inch down in the part that was not chipped yet - making a mess of the basement - i have a box around it, that does not stop the flying dust and chips

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I gotta go get red wine.Just to have while I wait.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sounds like progress to me. Prop a beach umbrella up over your work area, it will help contain the dust that goes skyward. No pressure Bill. No really none. ;)

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

better get a couple cases joann :)

pat i chip away between 6:30 and 8PM when there is only trash on tv - no pressure at all

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I'll add the wine to the pot roast then.

Southwest , NH(Zone 5b)

Bill, that looks even better than I had imagined. It really is a perfect mushroom shape. What an imaginative idea! It doesn't look like the weather is hampering your efforts very much!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

nice going

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it was so warm today and after all that rain i went out and was able to pull up the "stem" - i bought a circular blade for cutting granite, small blade only went in about 2" so there was lots left to chip - the stem had some cracks and while i was gently chipping it the &%(*&^% thing broke - to compound matters my neighbors cat left a present that the bottom of my shoe found - not a good day

will have to go for another hike and pray i find a replacement stem - those are real hard to find

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Ugh. Sorry, Bill. At least you have no squirrels!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

i wish i could borrow your pet to get this cat - also left a nice pile on the driveway last week - almost got that one with the snow blower

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Get the dog your wife wants!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Its really unusual for a cat to leave messes out in the open.
It was either a dog
OR
This is good news for you - - - The cat has major problems and will probably not be around for long.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

it is the cat - i am its problem and you are right it may not be around long

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Don 't be hatin', Bill!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Sorry to hear about the stem demise Bill. Hope you locate another rock to do the job. Probably a good thing to find out it was weak before you got all done and placed the cap on in garden and have it crack and fall. Be nice to kitty.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

started to winter sow today and found another pile of cat doo when i brought the containers out

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)
