LOL! I always do better with a deadline. Don't make me hustle or anything! LOL!
We're gonna have a grand time.
hellenzn, you'll recieve a dmail Blast with the directions when it gets closer to the event. So don't fret. I'll also be giving out a phone # you can call if need be. We're easy to rind and I'll probably have some kind of poster board sign up on the main road to let you know the turn is coming up for our road.
I'm pretty sure you won't be able to miss us.

So. Calif. Spring RU 2010 - FOOD
I think we need something in Ontario for us to hook up again, for another time, so we can be closer to my way. Just whining.
Can't wait to see you again Marie.
Dawn you can hook up with us here and drive down if that's more convenient for you.
There will always be people who are too far I guess. When it was in Rancho Cucamonga it was too far for some in San Diego. Can't think of where might actually be the "middle". My DH and I are used to covering many counties in a day just on business or visiting people. But, it amazes me when I hear people talk of not seeing family members for such a long time because the 'moved away'. I ask what state they moved to and find it is just the next county! We all have a pre-set ideal of what is too far. And if that distance is worth it, which I I guess we are, since Dawn is going the distance. Great idea to carpool.
True so true. My DH doesn't think anything of a three hour commute each way to Bakersfield for the day. That would kill me. Last spring at the mini-RU at weegy's we all tried to find a location that was more centralized for everyone and couldn't do it.
Not to worry hellenzn, we can do mini-exchanges on our help out fellow DG'ers work days! : - )
Say does anyone want some fresh eggs? Since Easter every hen I have is laying eggs. I can't give them away fast enough, so if you want some, Please Let Me Know!
I'll be taking the week old eggs down to our community cupboard, but by RU time the fridge will be full again.
Now 8 days and counting. LOL!
WIB,
SW
Fresh eggs, YES!!! Thanks SW! Looking so forward to seeing everyone.
Jules, I would love some fresh eggs. I have never had a real fresh egg and everyone tells me how good they are. Oh, how I wish I could have some chickens! lol
I have about 10 roosters that need new homes. LOL!
No broody hens right now.
Eggs are yours, I'm sure I'll have plenty. Only difference is mine are probably fresher than most grocery stores have, and since I feed them weeds and worms and snails among other things like lay mash, they taste better and their yolks are orange not yellow. Eggs are supposed to have orange yolks.
If the goose lays another egg, I'll blow it out and save it to show the kids attending. I'm sure they'll be surprised at how big they are. Goose eggs don't taste as good as chicken eggs, but you could eat them. Since I don't have a male goose, these are infertile eggs. No matter how hard she talks those hens into sitting on her eggs they have never hatched.
Got to go!

SW
Thanks Louise but it's fine. I will see you there.
If'n you still have some eggs, I'd take some. Donna, you are in for a treat, fresh laid are soooo wonderful. First time I had them, I was visiting a friend's, married into, ranch north of Santa Barbara. The day before I actually caught an egg as it was coming out of the chicken. Somehow this, then, city girl expected it would be slimey or something. Just warm and dry. The next morning we had fresh chicken and duck eggs. I was offered fresh, just milked, goat's milk but declined since it was still warm. My friend explained such things as how they get semen to artificially inseminate (Eewww) and had a calf, separated from it's dairy cow mom, suck my fingers - up to my elbow! Nancy laughs at the fact that I now can vaccinate livestock and such.
My brother used to raise chickens and he always said the orange yolks "stood right up a looked at you" when they were fresh. ^_^
Jules, if you have a spare rooster, I'd certainly like to give him a home. I'm going to buy his "harem" this afternoon. They want $25.00
for a daggone rooster! I know I need one so we can raise fryers, but the grown laying hens are only $20 and they're already producing eggs. Just don't see how the rooster is worth that much.
I know the goose eggs aren't that great for eating as an egg, but they're excellent for baking with.
This message was edited Apr 17, 2010 12:18 PM
How many hens are you buying? The ratio should be five hens per one rooster. Please take one home. (On my knees hand clasped!)
Do you have a cage for the rooster? If not I'm sure I could find something that would work.
My folks used to use gunny sacks.
They shouldn't be that high unless they are fighting roosters. I don't like the roosters so much (they are loud, and they do fight over the hens), and I don't want to have to do all the work preparing them to eat, so I'm stuck with too many.
I could put out a sign that I have roosters for sell, but out here, I'd be worried about them going to a cock fighter.
I'll probably move them over to the pig pen and let them hang out with her. As long as there are no hens close, they don't fight with each other usually. My poor hens would appreciate it, too.
Got ya down for the eggs, QG, weegy, and SoCal. I'm sure I'll have enough. LOL!

Thank you Jules, thank you for the offer.
Jules, I'm only gonna have three hens. Don't see that the two of us need more than that. And yes I have a place for him. As to transporting him back here, a burlap bag is just fine for that as long as we don't put him in it 'til we're ready to go. I'll bring one with me.
I'm going to rescue him when your not looking. I am a pet psycic and he told me he does not want to be a fryer. He said he is not the least bit religious.
Oh! I never intended for HIM to be a fryer Dawn, I want him to have his own harem and be the daddy of the fryers I raise.
Oh good, I won't have to live a life of crime, on the lamb with your chicken.
Hi all
Put me down for a seven layer bean dip and tortilla chips. Oh and DeJong's Dairies CHOCOLATE MILK!!! ^_^
Cayte
Welcome Cayte, don't think I have seen your name before - and you live so close! Have I just not been in the right Forums, or are your new? It will be great meeting you on Sat.
Lynda
She's been lurking and enabling minors! You'll like her a lot QG. : - )
Got lots of eggs so if anyone else wants some just let me know.
I get it with the roosters, DP. Be sure to check out my chicken pen, at the RU. We'll talk about the trials and tribulations of trying to raise chickens in coyote country. LOL!
No worries, hellnzn. I am keeping the roosters because I want them all to have their own harems.
Not to be eaten (unless we really are hungry!), but too many roosters makes for unhappy hens.
Enough said.

SW
Shoot, I want a rooster! Well I in the development I'm in I can't have one but I want one anyway. And hens! When we lived down south in Jamul we had both. I miss them a lot! Now last week a neighbor in our cul-de-sac had a rooster. Really! I totally enjoyed last Saturday and Sunday working out in the yard cuz his rooster crowed all day both days. I loved it but I guess some of my other neighbors didn't because I haven't heard him since Sunday. Maybe they ate him. hmmm
Anyway, I'd love a few fresh eggs SW if there are still any left.
And yes quiltygirl I'm a former lurker. I'm so looking forward to meeting you and all of you other too!
Oh and SW my DH has to drop us off early because we only have one vehicle and he has a HAM radio thing to go to in Wildomar at 10:00am. Hope that's okay. I can help you set up chairs or something. ^_^
Thanks!
Cayte
Cayte, you sound like a real kick, can't wait to meet you!
lol or happy hens?*^%$#
Pretty funny Cayte, We used to live in Jamul off Hwy 94 just before the 7-11. We built 3 homes there and named the street Ariana Ln after our daughter. The homeowners changed the name when we left!! We actually had a Spring Valley address, but fell under Jamul land jurisdictions. DD had her horse at Bright Valley for the year we had him before moving to Wildomar in 2004. Now we have more horses and goats too, no chickens.
Oops, guess I hijacked the Food thread, sorry guys.
Ya want a rooster, QG? It's okay, I'll be happy to share the eggs! LOL!
No problem Cayte, I'll probably be wondering around at first. It takes me a while to wake up, but once I'm awake, I'm good. I should have tables and all set up on Friday, but there is always something that needs doing.
Is anyone bringing Ice? I have an ice chest and a round tub we can put drinks in. Still trying to find the keys to the store for the coffee pot. DH says he'll find them.
WIB!
SW
Let me know if I need to bring a coffee pot Jules. It's not a problem.
Also, Lisa and I could bring some ice. It probably wouldn't be a bad idea if a few of us brought a bag or two just to be sure.
DesertPirate, it's very telling when one names a hen after a deceased aunt and or a rooster after a deceased uncle ya know. Did they henpeck you when you were growing up and this is this some form of retaliation on your part? ^_^
It might backfire you know. Imagine your dead aunt's spirit entering the body of that hen (well it was invited wasn't it?). Maybe you should think about some of the annoying little things you did to your aunt when you were younger. Those things might be visited on your head in the form of wild, rabid, seemingly unprovoked chicken attacks. So if you start noticing anything weird about your chickens behavior, well, I'd keep an axe or shotgun close at hand if I were you. ^_^ Especially if the eggs they lay are a little off color!
I'm just saying.
Cayte
DP The photo of your chicken brought me to tears. Our Katy who looked just like yours died last month. She was the nicest of our 3 chic. We could pet her and hold her, very sweet chic. We have 2 others that are O.K. just not as nice and tame as Katy.
Jules we will bring an ice chest full of ice also.
Sylvia
Quilty I am rolling, I so live 300 miles from Jamul but know the area well and the 7-11 you speak of too. I was just telling a story the other day at work, about how they used to have those port a potty things out in the parking lot a million years ago and I got locked in somehow. (Something or other was broken and it was HOT, HOT that day and the smell was so nasty and on top of it, I hate those and am claustrophobic. Dear X husband did not come to look for me, he thought I was just in the store for 20 minutes. His family lives in Tecate.
Thanks Sylvia. It's good not to have to worry about a last minute run to the store. Although, if we need to make one, I'm sending the Eldest Kid I got. He has a Drivers License and no other duties or responsibilities for the day, besides coralling the dogs and cats.
Your sweet hen, DP, looks like my Henny Penny. I don't bother naming them anymore, just Henny Penny and Spikette have names. Haven't bothered naming the roosters either and you can take your pick. You can have any rooster except for the Banty. He was a gift from Jonathan. Pretty soon, you'll have a broody hen of your own. LOL!
Fred is a good name for a Rooster. I kind of like the idea of using family names.
Then again, in some NAI cultures there are prohibitions on speaking the dead person's name. Has to do with holding his/her spirit on this planet instead of letting them go on to the Great Mystery. Unless the name was given away before s/he died or was given to a new born after they were gone, they don't say that name again, they find another way of referring to the deceased person. I digress, we'll talk at RU.
Everything is back on track for the RU, but it better warm up!

My mom thought is was a good tribute to her sister so that's all I need. Annie Mae is a sweet hen that lets me pet her and appreciated the worms I gave her as a "thank you" for the egg she laid yesterday. She already comes up to me for petting and she's only been here for two days.
However, I'll keep in mind the admonition Cayte. Aunt Annie Mae might not like the fact that I named a chicken after her. I'm sure I'll be the recipient of plenty of pecks and floggings if that's the case.
DP, in the old days we often find multiple children with the same name in one family. The custom was to name the next child born after one who had not survived. I sometimes have to add numbers after their names to keep them straight! I'll bet Aunt Annie Mae is pleased - as long as you don't name a snake after her! LOL
LOL!!!! Really!!!! I do have a relative or two I might consider naming a snake for, but not her.
Didn't George Foreman? Name all his kids the same thing? You know the grill guy, former jock?
Ditto what Randy said, although that could be insulting the snake. (Not the part about his Aunt, but the relative part). LOL!

Yes, there was George the 1st through George the 5th! Weird. I prefer to eat meat that has not had a name - or really, that I have not met and talked to. DD and I are definitely not vegetarians and instead of calling out 'MOO' the a heard of cattle (why do people do that anyway, like the cows need to be taught?), we call out "hi t-bone, hi hamburger", etc.
hellnzn - One of the girls in DD's Jamul Folklorico dance group was born at that 7-11! Child #4 came faster than expected and what with the drive out of rural Jamul, only made it that far before they needed to pull over!! Still had the porta potties when we lived there. Your story sounds awful, I feel the same way about those things, almost better to use the bushes, but it is too busy there, LOL.
It's finally here, the big day I actually visit a working farm. So looking forward to meeting everyone.
Jules, I've never had a fresh egg, would like to try some. Only eggs I buy is from the supermarket and who knows how fresh they are. Oh, my memories are coming back, I think about 40 years ago we bought eggs from some farmers in Fontana, I do remember the pullet eggs were so great for Easter.
Sorry I don't have any plants, etc. to share, maybe someday.......................
Oh Samigal you poor thing! Never a fresh egg? In your whole life?! :-( Then you probably shouldn't start now. You will be forever changed! ^_^ So unless you can locate a source of fresh eggs close to where you live you will spend the rest of your life pining for some. Either that or you'll go and secretly buy some hens to keep in your home.
Just like KaperC said. The orange yolks will stand right up an look at you. (so don't freak out, especially if the yolks start to follow your movement while they're in the frying pan.) but then you stab them with a fork and watch them disappear into your mouth so they'll STOP staring at you (OMHeck am I sooo heavily influenced by my 12 and 14 year old sons or what?!?!!). ^_^
Well maybe those staring yolks can do a colonoscopy while down there? ^_^
Twenty-two hours and counting!!!
Cayte
Cayte, I thought you were rushing me, because by my clock I still have 24 hours and 15 minutes, but then I remembered you were coming early. Oh, you crack me up. Definitely raising boys changes the way you look at the world.
Samigal, no worries, but do bring something to haul your loot home in. : - )
Most of us enjoy meeting with each other just as much as we do swapping plants. Don't worry about that, okay?
Cayte can be the count down clock, I've got a few things to do do still.
With gr8 anticipation!
