SW - I can do name tags for you. Do you need me to make them? That will be more incentive for us to actually get there early, much less on time!!

Glad I could entertain some of you with jello. It still makes me laugh. I don't even like the stuff, it's a consistancy thing.

Lynda

We have a volunteer. : - 0
QG, that would be an awesome thing for you to do. You can be our official Greeter/name tagger. Thank you so very much! One less thing for me to worry about. : - )
I found some of those tree seedlings that proliferate like weeds here. Are you still interested? LMK, so I can dig 'em up before they get any bigger or DH's guys come back! : - (

I have Kanita's recipe for lemon bars. I haven't tried to make them yet, but I could give it a try.....or send the recipe to someone else who wants to try them.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Just so long as they're still called "Kanita's Lemon Bars", sounds like a good idea for someone who can actually cook.

That's what my recipe says right across the top; "Kanita's Lemon Bars". I just haven't tried to make them yet.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

What happened to her brother? He abandoned us.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Whose brother?

SW - which tree seedlings? I sure have plenty of those Breath of Heaven trees and the Wild Tobacco.

Do you want me to bring the nametags?

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

If I disappear for a while, it is because my hard drive is going out, I may need to back up pictures fast.

SW you still want 2 globe willow branches? 80 feet of pure screening. lol

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

What is a breath of heaven tree? I googled but did not find anything.

No. San Diego Co., CA(Zone 10b)

This one is a shrub, but the description says 6ft. http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/111172/

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Dawn;
If you have extra of those Globe Willow cuttings, I'd like to have one.
Thanks so much
Randy

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Marie, Lynda means ailanthus....Tree of Heaven.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Randy, are you home? You posted just a few minutes ago....I'm on my way to drop off a couple of plants to Kathleen. If you're home, I can drop off the vincas....I've been up way too many hours already this a.m......lol...trying to get the running around done now while I'm still in the 'getting it done' frame of mind...

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Thanks Sherry with that name this is what I found
They are fast-growing deciduous trees growing to 25-45 m tall, with spreading branches and large (40-100 cm) pinnate leaves with 15-41 long pointed leaflets, the terminal leaflet normally present, and the basal pairs of leaflets often lobed at their bases. The small yellow to greenish flowers are borne on branched panicles. They turn reddish later in the year and eventually brown. They stay on the tree for a long time; the male flowers have a strong odour. The odour tends to resemble the smell of strong cat urine or the spray of a male cat. Also, touching the leaves leaves an unpleasant smell on the hands. The fruit is a samara drawn out into a long wing with the seed in the middle. The wood is fine grained and satiny.

Hmmm I love trees but no sure I want one that smells of cat urine. With the name tree of heaven you would expect some thing else!!

Lynda what do you think fo this tree since you are growing it?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

This is the food thread.....right? So yep, K, I can bring coffee too. I also have so many lemons I don't know what to do with them all so I'll bring some lemonade as well.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Yup, we're way off topic. It's all good.
In answer to QG, I think I have name tags. No, they aren't Trees of Heaven, or Wild tobacco. They are weeds and I have several seedlings. Grow fast in arid climates and send down lots of seedlings. I will take a photo to post on the plant thread this aft.
hellenzn. Yes, please. I need them to screen off the rental house which is on top of a hill. Since it is so exposed and my renter has small grandchildren, I could use 80 feet+ of screening. Thank you~
DP, you the man. Thanks for handling the Coffee and lemonade.

Marie - we had a discussion on that tree in the "Spring is on it's Way' thread, starting Feb 25th. I found out this self seeder can be quite tenacious. Although it fits the 'get free, grow fast, get shade' desire, it has a lot of other undesirable traits. I will keep the dozen or so we have, but will not let more get a foothold.

Now, I return you to the Food Thread. Sorry to hijack.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Yes I can bring a Globe Willow Cutting for you DP, (What is your name?)
We call Tree of Heaven Weed Trees here. I like them but they will sucker ALL OVER YOUR YARD, WORSE THAN ELMS, THESE SUCKER.

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

I refer to them as Bermuda grass in tree form. Just as invasive and a total pain.
Randy

Tolleson, AZ(Zone 9a)

Ok I hate bermuda grass and I already have an extremely weedy tree that rivals the bermuda even here in the desert!!

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Sorry I got us off task. lol

Why is Kanita coming with her famous Lemon Bars?
Her brother used to be on, his name was Pinipinranch or something like that.

I will look at recipe's this week and figure out what I'm bringing.

Jo is not down for the Sopapilla cheese cake so let me put her name down for that.

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

I was wondering if anyone has heard from Kanita, her lemon bars are so wonderful.

I thought I would bring a desert, maybe some breads like zucchini, etc. and some cream cheese to spread on it.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

MMMMMM! Who really needs food anyways.

No Central, AZ(Zone 7b)

Pegi - Bring the zucchini bread, you know that comes under the 'eat 5 fruits & vegetables' section of the Food Pyramid!

(Pegi) Norwalk, CA(Zone 10b)

Well, went back and read more posts. Sounds like a lot of good food coming. I'm on a eat healthy kick so glad the zucchini bead is in the 5 fruits and veggies section. I printed out the lemon bar recipe from Kanita, but who knows where I put things. Haven't tried them either, but they were the best I've ever eaten. I'm all for eating desert first myself, but trying to lose a few pounds.

Will be shopping at Costco soon so I put that Chinese red rice yeast (?) on my list. I worrying about clogged arteries a lot more now since that is what I lost my son to 5 years ago. Well this is food thread so better stick to food.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Sami sorry for the loss of your boy. I get teary even thinking of it. I have cholestrol issues too and have since my 20's, it is hereditary I imagine, since Grandma died from heart issues too. They said her heart was like a 100 year old woman, when she was 71.

The best lemon bars that I ever had are these ones from this restaurant/bakery Delicatessen that they have in Northridge. They have one in West Lake too, the same chain, the name alludes me though. Oh yeah, Brent's.

If I had the recipe, I would try to make them, since you all like them so much.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Well, we can have Michael stop off at Brents and get them for us. lol

Rancho Cucamonga, CA

Pegi, I am so sorry to hear this.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

Do any of you know Frank (Herbie) from here? I asked him for a recipe idea, he suggested this;
all you need are bonelesws, skinless chicken breasts cut into bite size pieces
beaten eggs
bread crumbs (either flavored or plain)
3/4 cups dark soya sauce
3/4 cup sugar
one thumb sized grated ginger
o8l for frying

pour oil into a fry pan under medium high heat
dip the chicken pieces into the beaten egg and then into the bread crumbs
and cook until they are nice and brown and cooked through.

when they are done put them into a container with a tight lid.

mix together the soya sauce, sugar and ginger and mix until well blended

pour the mixture over the chicken and mix well. place in fridge and every so often turn the container over to make sure everything is coated.

I don't know what you guys were thinking, if you still were heading toward more deserts or what, he was trying to help me think of stuff that would travel well, but I did not say deserts. Did you guys have enough food, food stuff?

I am fine if you found the recipe for Lemon Bars and want me to try those? What happened to Kanita, if you have her email or dmail then she can give us the recipe. Maybe if we search on the food threads, it would turn up.

Otherwise, I can do something like this or let me know what else sounds good. When I look at Recipes it makes me want to eat all of it and make all of it. help me! help me! she says in the FLY voice.

Here's the recipe for Kanita's lemon bars.

Kanita’s Lemon Bars
Ingredients:
Crust
• 2 sticks (8 ounces) butter
• 2 cups flour
• 1/2 cup confectioners' sugar
Mix above and press into an ungreased 13x9x2-inch pan. Bake @ 350* for 13 to 15 minutes. Crust will still be very light. Remove from oven and allow to cool.

Layer 1
• 1 8oz pkg. Cream Cheese (softened)
• ½ cup sugar
• 1 egg
Mix and pour onto crust.

Layer 2
• 4 beaten eggs
• 2 cups sugar
• 4 tablespoons flour
• 1/2 cup lemon juice
• 2 tablespoon finely grated lemon peel
• sifted confectioners' sugar
Preparation:
Blend eggs, sugar, 4 tablespoons flour, lemon juice, and lemon peel. Pour over first layer of cream cheese filling. Return to oven and bake at 350° for 18 minutes. Loosen around edges, cut into bars and sift confectioners' sugar over the top while warm.

Dawn, SW and her DH are providing BBQ chicken.

Rosamond, CA(Zone 8b)

OK WILL MAKE THE LEMON BARS THEN. PENCIL THAT IN.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Gee, I get busy out in the garden for a couple of days, and find out that someone is going to bring Danita's Lemon Bars! Yippee! : - )
hellenzn, thanks for that great chicken recipe. I've to make my son try it out. I am forcing my boys to learn how to cook. LOL!
Thanks for providing the recipe DP. :- )

It was from Herbie on DG. He freaked out because I suggested coconut would be good in it, and he was the typical chef, don't you dare change a thing. lol I am going to have my family over for dinner in a few weeks and make it for them. Sounds yummy.

You thank me now for the lemon bars, and hope I deserve it once you eat them.

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

I'm allergic to coconut, so I'm glad it isn't in the recipe. My cousin, who is an excellent baker, tortures me with confections she makes using coconut in them. Then she gets me to sample them knowing I'm going to break out in hives. That is just mean. I ask now.

deadly potentially too. Does she like you????(*&^%%

Menifee, CA(Zone 9a)

Nope, she'd be the first to tell you that she only calls me when she wants something. I wish her well, and have no idea why she has always been like this, even as kids.
I haven't seen her for about five years and don't anticipate seeing her ever again. Might happen, but only because of her kids, who spent most of their spare time here with me, as teens.
It's okay. I don't miss her a bit.

Good, I would be worried if you did. I can't believe the RU is next week already. Are you posting directions?

Fallbrook, CA(Zone 10b)

Lisa has decided that biscuits and coffee are not enough for us to bring. She has something in mind, probably some kind of dessert, so we'll be there bearing gifts. I'm really looking forward to it. T-minus 9 days and counting.
