2010 Philly Flower Show, Passport to the World, 2-28 to 3-7

Norristown, PA(Zone 6b)

Sorry folks, but after checking today's work email, it doesn't look like I'll be able to get to the show on Wed. There's just too many meetings to be rescheduled because of the snows. I appreciate all of your efforts to accomodate my schedule.

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Nuts! I'm sorry, Stormy. Hopefully you can get there another day.

They're only calling for an inch of snow around here on Wednesday... and a mix of rain/snow with no accumulation in Philly... so hopefully we'll be OK. If that changes, I'm thinking Friday might be a workable alternative, but we can cross that bridge when/if/hopefully not!

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

I haven't been to this show in a lot of years but I love it & if I didn't have so many irons in the fire this year, I would go. The WORST thing about this show is the sales area. If you can't control yourself, like me, your plastic credit card starts melting from overuse, and so does your account but there so many neat things to buy there and a lot of rare & unusual plants. Here's a little tip for you photographers: When you are lining up to take your picture, try to hold your breath right before you push the button. It steadies the camera. I had this problem for many years until I read one of the photography forums on this site and Eureka! It works! I know it is difficult at the flower show because of all the people pushing & shoving but if you can make yourself cough like crazy, they will all move away, leaving you time to sneak in a shot. Well did y'all end up going???

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Ric and I didn't make it. His arthritis was too bad for us to go. He had a really rough couple of days. We had talked about going Friday if he was up to it but it doesn't look like that is going to happen. He is better today but I think he will take it easy tomorrow. Critter should have a ton of pictures.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

Hope Ric is better.. these cold damp days are not good

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

So sorry Ric, isn't feeling good.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Ric, Are you taking Celebrex? I used to take it but the Doc got me off it and I am just fine. Bob still takes it and it works greatl. You have my sympathies. Maybe next year, huh? We will look for the pix. Holly, I hope you can go to the Hobby Greenhouse meeting on Saturday. Judy S.

Mount Bethel, PA(Zone 6a)

Bob and I met up with Jill and Terri for a while, which was GREAT!! Bob was a good sport about walking around with me, but he was more interested in tools and other things. We arrived there at 9am, so by 3 o'clock he was done and we left without dining and continuing with Jill and Terri.

We did miss Stormy and Holly and Ric.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

No Judy he doesn't take Celebrex.
R_R_R, Yes I was so looking forward to seeing you I think we would have had a great time at the show.

Carlisle, PA(Zone 6b)

Mitt, I have the plant that is in this photo: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/p.php?pid=7594528

But I would love to know the Scientific name of the plant to the left of it. Thanks. Judy Showers

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks for the pic Mitt. I didn't look at them earlier as I didn't want to see them before we went but now that I didn't go I am loving all the pictures.

Dover, PA(Zone 6b)

You caputred some of my favorite things. Love the doorway competition.
Stormy those look like the Reticulated Iris maybe Katherine Hodgkins. I was so looking forward to seeing the display of Reticulated Iris. So far I haven't found a good spot for them in my gardens but when I do look out. LOL

Frederick, MD(Zone 6b)

Reticulated iris... anywhere that gets spring sunshine (shade from deciduous trees -- no problem, they're done by the time the leaves grow out).. wonderful along a pathway, at the front of a border, between clumps of yellow daffs...

I haven't picked up any 'Katherine Hodgkins', though, because I think the delicate gray of the coloring would make them get lost against my weathered mulch. I've planted a bunch of them, though -- often, I just put in whatever is on sale at B&B or VE at the end of the season. :-)

Terri (aspenhill) & Terri (RosesRRed) & I had a fabulous time at the show! We really missed Holly & Ric & Stormy. We didn't head home until they were broadcasting "the show will be closing soon!" announcements. LOL

I took loads of photos and am making my way through them. Hopefully I'll get a slew of them posted early next week, but things are busy this weekend.

I liked these flamingos...

I have planted a few but they just don't do well.Either lost or never flowered and didn't spread. I just put one in last year near the Blue ball Bubbler. We will see how that one does. Love the pink flamingos they are a favorite of mine and the gator with the flamingo feathers in his mouth. LOOL

Mom and I watched the blacktie preview on Saturday night on Channel 6. I'm glad, cuz I didn't go. You only see snippets of things, but it loooked lovely. Anxious to see your pics, Critter.

Very cute, can't wait to see the rest.

did they seriously hav a display in Childrens Garden with a sign about prostate cancer????!!!
"what's a prostate Daddy?"

And Daddy said, "Ask your mother"

Yes, Sally they really had that sign posted. It was in the Campbell soup display just on the other side of the walkway from the Children's garden.

Judy, sorry I can't help you with the scentific name. I limit my plant addictions to the bearded irises. I'll send out a few emails to friends and see if I can get you an ID on that plant

Thank you everyone for your kind words. I swear it's the camera...it's not me. I'm glad everyone enjoyed the pictures especially those who couldn't attended the Flower Show. I hope next year everyone can stop and check out the displays and take in some of the history and sites of my home town.

DSO and I made it to the show on Saturday. The flowers were still looking very good. It was wall to wall people. I really liked that there were quite a few displays that highlighted native plants. Also, there were at least 5 displays of shade gardens.

One of the nicest and most frequent themes was incorporating fruits, vegetables and herbs into the ornamental plantings. The row of row houses with small porch gardens was wonderful. There were several displays showing how to maximize small planting areas. Some were very ingenious.

There was a surprising amount of red in the plantings this year. I particularly enjoyed the exhibits from the different plant societies, universities and enviornmental groups. The Fern Society's display was very nice. The people working these exhibits were all very friendly and willing to discuss the exhibits and the plants. These exhibits were much closer to something a gardener could achieve.

There was plenty of glitz and very urban modern displays too. The display winner for Creating an Oasis was incredibly serene and beautiful. The pond displays were also fun, although I was unsure of whether or not the "Horsetails" were a good idea.

There were many wonderful entries in the individual plant categories. I liked the "Oldies but Goodies" category. All of the plants in it had to be at least 15 years old. Most of those were magnificent. The dish gardens were wonderfully creative, as were the terrariums.

The vendor section was hugh and very well attended. People were very busy shopping. Lots of flowers, plants, bulbs, seeds, tools, decorative and useful items. Some prices were very reasonable, others were not. The best values were not actually in the vendor section. They were at the Philadelphia Horticultural Society's display.

This is a show that every gardener should attend at least once in their life. I've been to other shows in other major cities and have yet to see one that comes close to this show. It does require comfortable footwear and an entire day. It takes at least 8 hours to get more than a overview of the show. This year, I breezed through the vendor area in order to see more of the displays as the crowd thinned out during the evening hours. Being able to grab a cold beer right on the floor of the show was a real plus!!
