Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

YEP!!

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

That is the culture that made them famous along with the 'Groupies'. The 60's, where young men fresh out of HS were sent to Vietmam, I used to hear the list of men that were alumni read every morning over the PA of those who died the prev day from my HS. It was a live now and forever type of climate. A flame that burns white hot and then extinguishes. - Not a nice 'comfy' place to exist...

Saw an interesting documentary earlier, "A Man Called Pearl". Topiaries to the extreme! Ric

Victor,Didn't think anyone else would know Scarecrow. I liked it a lot.

Another good movie early in the actors' career is Racing with the Moon with a very young Sean Penn & Nicholas Cage. Penn is a great actor in spite of his sometimes sloppy life'

I think they probably had a lot of junk movies in the classic era. We just see the cream of the crop. There are great modern movies too-they're just not the majority. Themes change. Actors then showed charecter, played charecters. Now we look for anti-heroes and serious actors are expected to be much more versatile.

Always glad to hear To Kill A Mockingbird come up. It's an all time faorite and a rare movie as good as the book.

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

One of my favorite authors is Pat Conroy (Prince of Tides, The Great Santini, Lords of Discipline) seemed to have gone dry. But his I just started his new book and it looks like he is back!

Southern, CT(Zone 6a)

I really liked Blindsided. I wasn't sure if Sandra Bullockhad the chops, but she
was great!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

To Kill a Mocking bird was Harper Lees only great novel.I loved the movie.
I'm familiar with Prince of Tides and The Great Santini. Both as movies were great.
I wish there were more "slice of life" films now instead of Pixar manipulated entertainment and ,the worst, Rambo type pyrotechnic extravaganzas. It seems when special effects people figured it out, that every special effects person picked it up and used it. Overkill pun intended.
Maybe its the same blast footage used over and over again on blue screen.

Hah! The Great _______ just appeared in a crossword puzzle. Thanks for reminding me how to spell it!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

"A Man Called Pearl" was amazing!! Saw it some time ago. He was a gardner on a mission.

WC-- I experienced the same thing. I saw the young men in my neighborhood go off to Vietnam and either not return or return on drugs or just a shell of their former selves. It contributed to a generation of "think outside the box" people who did do some great things in music, movies, and helped the ecology. The Celestial Tea company came out of that era.

Dave...Prince of Tides was a moving portrayal of the effects of dysfunction. Loved it. But then anything Streisand is in, does it for me. I'll be looking for the new Pat Conroy.

I think Pixar does a good job of presenting the human condition. There are lots of children films with an adult message if you look beneath the surface.

Wall-E, my favorite, was a testament to over consumption, and the propensity to live fat, dumb and happy with a blind eye to whats really happening around you.

I havent seen Blindside but Bullock won an award for it last night. I was happy tosee her efforts rewarded, she is a survivor.Avatar also won a golden globe for best picture as it should have. And Monique won for "Push" an exceptional slice of real life and a page turning book. A great victory for real sized women.

Just rewatched "Lillies of the Field" w/ Sidney Poitier. I could watch that 50 times and not get tired of it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Poitier is another great. The Defiant Ones was a classic.

Joyce - even Yentl??????

True, Dave. There certainly were many stinkers but at the same time, it is more impressive that so many great performances came out of the grinder that Hollywood was back then. Actors would often do a movie a month!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Victor....The "Defiant Ones" was good! Loved "To Sir With Love" and "Patch Of Blue".

Yea, Yentl wasnt a box office hit, but I liked it.

A lot of the "stinkers" from back then, have become camp classics like "The 50ft Woman". They certainly were prolific. Thats why i like to read the credits. Some actors, from way back in small roles, became box office draws later on.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

'To Sir with Love', 'Blackboard Jungle' and 'Guess who's Coming to Dinner'...All great with Poitier!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I loved Blackboard Jungle.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

"To Sir With Love" one of my all time favs.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Now the song is stuck in my head!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Never saw Patch of Blue. What was the one where he was a doctor??

Appropriate to be talking about Sidney on Martin's birthday!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Guess Whose Comming to Dinner was fantastic.
Spencer and Kathryn were perfect 50's type parents.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Victor he is an office worker who befriends a blind girl. Very good movie.

Spencer and Kathryn in anything together is good! Their was one about a computer that was cute...can't think of the name off hand...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Thanks, Ronnie.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Oh your welcome ☺

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

The computer one was about equal rights for women before Betty Fridane
Was it Office Suite?

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

It was Desk Set.

Eastern Long Island, NY(Zone 7a)

Yes! Desk set, I think that was my favorite as a team. Taylor & Burton was my favorite team loved Cleopatra!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Taylor and Burton were meant to be together!

Call me corny, but I liked Rock Hudson and Doris Day too.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Finally saw "UP" this weekend. I wasn't crazy about it, it was kinda sad.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Yes Desk Set!

I like Rock Hudson and Doris Day, they were good in 'Pillow Talk'.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I want to wake up and be able to play like this guy.

A friend was talking to me the other day about The Deer Hunter. Was there ever a more intense movie. It's a fantastic movie, but very difficult to watch. Felt completely beat up inside after watching it.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

I own it, it's one of those classics.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Who was the actor who played Russian Roulette in the movie?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Christopher Walken, who is from Astoria, like me.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Everyone was great in that - DeNiro, Walken, Streep, Cazale. I know many like Platoon as the ultimate Vietnam movie, but I like Deer Hunter and Apocalypse better.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

I love everything he has ever done except a snuff movie I happened to see in a hotel in Chicogo.I dont know the title, its just as well.
He was the father in the movie about the Imposter .

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ohhh yes. Was Charlie Scheen in Apocolyps? or Platoon?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

He's a weird guy. His parents had a great bakery in Astoria for years.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Platoon.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I just think if you saw those two movies, you got the entire Vietnam experience. Throw in Coming Home for that part of it, and you got it.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Apocalypse was Duvall, Matrtin Sheen, Brando. Based on Conrad's Heart of Darkness, but set in Vietnam. Great novel, great movie. Even the same character name was used - Brando was Kurtz.
