Countdown to spring! One garden photo per day - Part 3

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Pretty, love pulmonaria! I love how you get the mixed colors on one plant. And some of the leaves are so distinctive.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

very nice polly and dnut

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks.

Actually they kind of go together.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Great shot, WC. Beautiful path, Patti. Nice coleus, Joyce.

Physocarpus Coppertina from May.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

How beautiful! I just got a flat of those and Summer Wine to sell last year. Do you have Summer Wine, too?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - I like it too, but Coppertina a bit more.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Nice Victor, I had to look that one up. Its on my spring to buy list.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

It's fantastic from spring to fall, Joyce. One of my fave plants. Have about six or seven of them. Great to pair with bright foliage plants.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Hi Pixie. Hope your puter is better soon. Great crocii pic WC! Luv tiny daffs too ^_^ I SO have a spot for a coppertina! Thanks Victor.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Yes, it says it changes colors in fall, flowers, and grows fast (up to 8ft) . Doesnt get better than that for a shrub. Thanks for posting it Victor.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

And you can easily prune it to keep it smaller. The seed heads are also very pretty.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Do they get tall and not very wide at first, Victor, or is the growth pretty even? In the containers they look like the height is way out distancing the width. I'll prune in the spring, but I was wondering if that was normal.

I think they are hardy to like z2.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Taller than wide, but not dramatically more. I've had to prune the width - don't like sagging branches.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Lovely pics everyone! I agree with Polly. The redbud of Bill's, the s. iris from Polly and the lungwort from d-nut would all look pretty in the same area.
That is a great shot WC and wouldn't it look nice with Pirl's daffs planted around Victor's coppertina. Can you tell I am in garden planning mode? LOL
Here is a clem from the end of May, 'Elsa Spath'.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks. They are markedly taller in the pots.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Gorgeous clem!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very pretty, Pat!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

One of the loveliest clematis I've seen.Pretty blue color.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Looks a lot like Ramona.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

elsa is nice patti

almost picked up a couple more coppertina's last year at the end of the season and passed - i always like to mix in darker colors with green/yellow and blue conifers - might have to reconsider next year have an area along the driveway that is very dry. amended it a couple years ago and things have improved a bit - still i watch it closely as it has been a plant dead zone - will have to look up coppertina again to see how it does in that environment - nothing red there right now.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

They're fantastic with light conifers, like deodars.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

not a deodar or pinus fan - have a huge list of others (picea's, psuedotsuga, cham's, tsuga, and larix) from a couple sources i am considering.

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Thanks. It is a nice reliable clem usually. Unfortunately this year not long after that shot, the slugs got after it something awful before I realized that was what was attacking it. Found the slimy suckers six feet up crawling and munching during that long stretch of endless cloudy rainy days in early summer. Yuck!

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Thanks all, I do love me tulips!

I also adore geraniums. Rozanne is my favorite blue, closely followed by Jolly Blue, and I adore one called 'Double Jewel' that is a white with a dusting of purple in the center and a new one for me last year called 'Jenny Archibald' which is a very intense magenta with a black eye. 'Splish Splash' is growing on me as is 'Espresso' with it's nice dark leaves. Orion has a nice long blooming period similar to it's parent Brookside. I will have a full report next summer of a bunch of new ones that I planted last spring (Orkney Cherry , Mavis Simpson, St. Ola, Cheryl's Shadow, Sweet Heidi, Dragon Heart, Muldoon , A. T Johnson) Oh heck, I like all the others in the garden too especially good old 'Ballerina' and 'Album' etc.

jadajoy, love the shot of your coleus mix.

Pirl, I agree about the tiny Narcissus. I can't get enough of them or any Narcissus for that matter. I have 259 cultivars in the garden now. I have added a new mini called 'Little Rusky' this fall which I am anxious to see. "are we there yet?"

Victor, I still don't have a Physocarpus in my garden even after seeing you mention it often. I will get with the program this spring.

Ngam, lovely Elsa Spath Clematis. I have planted many and keep hoping for the big leap thing in the third year, but I am long past that for many and they are still not what I would call vigorous though General Sikorsky showed promise last summer.

PollyK, Loved my Shaker Prayer's last year from you, but I loved the one I got from you called 'Here Be Dragon's' more. Here it is on June 13th 2009. Patti

Yea, slugs are a problem here in the summer too.Hate them!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Very nice, Patti!

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Patti, what are you doing getting all those irises to bloom the first year, you good iris mom, you.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pollyk, I did nothing but take them out of the lovingly packed box by you and planted them. Tis' you gal. But I think 4 of 11 did bloom. Not bad. Patti

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Thanks Patti. I do think it's unusual to get them to bloom the fist year, though, so I still say good job, Patti!

Valatie, NY(Zone 5a)

Patti - Your tulip beds are nothing short of fabulous! What a spring picture!

I adore the spreading geranium 'Rozanne' (or 'Roseanne'), and have it beneath a dwarf lilac hedge. It bloomed and bloomed until nearly November.
