Tulips in the Serpentine Garden (started last year). Can't wait for their re-emergence this April-May. More pix of this winding garden (built into a very steep hill) here: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/2009/05/serpentine-garden-or-how-to-make-heaven.html

Countdown to spring! One garden photo per day - Part 3
Splendid
Victor I am looking forward to the columbines. Yours is very pretty indeed. Love those close-ups.
Beautiful tulips and garden wintergardener. Love the stone work.
Its a good thing you really can't order fall bulbs now, I would be in such trouble. :)
Thanks, WC. Real nice lupine shot. Like the out of focus ones in the back.
Wow! That does it! I'm buying more lupines!! (lol!)
Cool!☺
Very nice, Pirl! The LI lupines are great.
that's so pretty!
Beautiful Pirl
Thanks! Jack and I enjoy how they keep on blooming after the first blooms are done.
wc and pirl nice lupine pics - looking forward to next spring i grew a couple dozen or more from seed last year as well as foxglove all in the same bed - hoping they make through the winter and put on a show like yours
I'm sure I rip out more foxglove than most people ever plant. It self-seeds a bit too well in several gardens. Sometimes I will move a few small plants but there isn't enough room to allow them all to grow.
Nice lupins WC and Pirl. I have not tried them for many years. The last time they got attacked by little ant like insects that chewed up the roots just as they were about to bloom. May put in an order for some. This thread is really getting dangerous.
As to the foxgloves, I did notice a huge amount of seedlings before the snow cover came. I think if they all live I will be weeding a lot out as well. Think it was all that rain this year.
i "planted" any seeds i saw on the foxgloves that bloomed the first year here - can always pull them out.
have not had many lupine self seed here pirl your lucky
Fabby work on the slope Kevin! Prettiful pink columbine Victor. OH :O Pirl cheated! I think it's allowed though under rule 39(1)(q) which is the exception for lupin fields. How in hoot did you get a lupin field dear Pirl? Did they self sow or did you plant plentifully?
Pretty trout lily. That should go well with all those new blue wildflowers.
Luv the trout lily. They look like little ole fashioned dutch girls ^_^
Thanks : ) I'm hoping those blue annuals fill in all the bare soil in my gardens. Lol
I am done with spending hundreds of dollars on mulch, when I can have reseeding annuals filling in the bare spots instead. ; ) I can't wait for spring already! At least in Feb. I'll be able to start planting seeds indoors.
If you want a nice plant groundcover and have a little shade, the groundcover geraniums like Biokovo are just wonderful. They have really taken off for me, and are very weed suppressing.
Great idea! Thanks, I was thinking of adding more Geraniums. I am just bummed they aren't something I can grow from seed. I tried a few different types from T&M last season with very poor results. Do you know if that popular blue one (I think it's called Brookside) reseeds or is it sterile like Jolly Bee or Rosanne and the other similar ones?
I don't know. The best seeders I have had were Johnsons Blue, and Samobor. Samobor seeds anywhere it can get an inch of ground. The leaves have a maple leaf pattern on them, so it's very easy to tell which ones they are.
Biokovo and those spread by runners. I have had them spread one foot in a year. Victor mentioned one of the groundcover ones he liked, too, I forget which? Victor?
Meridith some of the geraniums are a little tougher to grow from seed but it can be done. From the Tom Clothier guide:
Geranium asphodeloides, caespitosum, himalayense, oxonianum, and palmatum, Sow at 13ºC (55ºF), germinates in less than two wks
Geranium endressii, macrorrhizum, and sylvaticum , Sow at 20ºC (68ºF), germination slow
Geranium pratense, and pyrenaicum , Sow at 18-22ºC (64-71ºF), if no germination after 4 wks, move to -4 to +4ºC (24-39ºF) for 4-6 wks, then move to 5-12ºC (41-53ºF) for germination
Geranium bohemicum, maculatum, nepalense, nodosum, palustre, phaeum, psilostemon, renardii, sanguineum, swatense, and viscosissimum , Sow at Max. 5ºC (41ºF), germination irregular, often several months
wintergardener, amazing blog site. Love your doggie, Lily too. I will have to spend a whole day in your garden (site). Thanks.
Love the Lupines Just wish I could grow some. Still trying. I got a wonderful Holiday gift from Boojum a fine Photograph of one of her Pale Yellow Lupines framed by a mass of her Siberian Iris. Stunning.
Meredith79, I have lost a few trout lilies due to my constant disturbing of their spot, but am hopeful that the new batch will be happy, if I don't keep digging them up. Me Bad.
My choice for today will be from a May shot taken on May 3, 2009 of some tulips etc with Viburnum carlesii. Patti
drooooooooool
OMG that is so beautiful Patti!
Thanks for all the Geranium ideas everyone! I will look those two up Polly, I am glad to know Johnson's Blue reseeds, maybe I'll try that one this year.
Dnut, I got one of the mixes 'I think it was called Reflections' from T&M and I got two plants out of 'I think' 8 seeds. They ended up being these little flowered straggly things I would have mistaken for weds had they volunteered in my garden. I will see if I can find a picture of them some where and give a link. They weren't anything like what I was expecting. The pictures were showing types that looked like the pratensis type. I also tried the one that is fuchsia with black eyes, I didn't get any germination from that one. I had put them out on my unheated porch for cold treatment but it didn't do the trick. I'm bummed because I had high hopes for them.
Wow, Patti!
I found a thread I had started on one of the Geraniums I grew from seed here http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1026799/ You have to see what I am talking about, they were really pitiful, but I am hoping they look better this year. I am not counting on it though.
I remembered there is one more that didn't flower the first year, so I am looking forward to seeing what it does next year. The leaves on it looked more like the types they sell at the garden center. The leaves looked a lot like the 'Alba' variety. Keeping fingers crossed I like it. : )
Personally I think they are quite pretty. Definitely wild flowerish, but dainty and pretty.
Here's the Biokovo. If you want a start give me a yell in the spring, I'd be glad to send you one. I also will have lots of seedlings of Samobor, but don't know how good they would transplant.

Thank you so much, that is very nice of you. :) I think they will look better if they were bigger, they stayed quite small. Here is a nice picture of a mass of them. They do look better to me this way. http://www.robsplants.com/plants/GeranPyren.php
After double checking the page on that website where he shows the different leaves, I am pretty sure the unbloomed seedling I have is a pratense. Which color will be a surprise. : )
Those are quite pretty, I might even have some. In fact, I think I do. Rob and I exchange plants.
You're welcome. Like I said just let me know if you want some Biokovo.
Bbrookrd! I saved your tulip picture months ago and used it as a pattern for planting my order fromB&B, and J Scheepers.
I'll send picks when they open.
Not as many masses as you have but DG'er told me a bulb planting trick, hope it works.
Lovely Trout Lily Meredith. I will also be looking forward to your geranium pics this season. I am sure they will be very nice.
Patti that tulip pic is just amazing. All your scenes are so wonderfully arranged. Just love gazing into them.
What a colorful display of coleus Jadajoy. Just lovely with the strong dark purples and light lime brights. A great combination for sure.
