CUCUMBERS for 2010 - WHOSE IN?

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

I grew Marketmore 97 and Poinsett 76 this spring, they did well. I planted Babylon last month. They were up when I left for vacation. I'm anxious to see how well they handle TX winds. We use cattle panels for them to climb on.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Calalily - did your Marketmore have a nice crisp, bright taste? I don't care for cucumbers if they are bitter.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I'm growing Marketmore this year, too.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

stephanie - I found the seeds for Marketmore at Earth Fare. Every seed I set seems to have sprouted. I'm going to surround them with Sluggo Plus and coffee grounds tomorrow to keep the slugs and pill bugs at bay.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Whalaah! All I know is that it is a burpless pickle... I had to cheat this year to get plants going...

I have a wisteria that is not invasive. But that dang trumpet vine has sent runners everywhere.

Blossombuddy - Marketmore is a pickling cucumber?

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Dont think mine is Marketmore.. its a bigger cuke according to the lable... Should be a salad pickle.

I have heard Market mores are good picklers, but never tried them so dont go by me!

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Blossombuddy - oh, good - yes I think they are a salad cucumber, which is what I wanted. When I lived in Tennessee, I grew pickling cucumbers. I don't have the time or the space to put them up here in NC. I like "bread-and-butter-pickles" best.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

I hope someone will correct me if I am wrong on the Marketmores becasue I am not sure if they are a salad pickle or not..

The pickle I have though was the lable I was saying was a burpless salad cuke! Sorry if I confused you!

I love bread and butters too.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Blossombuddy - I'm sure you are correct. I seem to remember the lable on mine had a picture that looked like a salad pickle. I was a little confused, but no worries :) :)

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

It's a slicing cuke. I got my seeds from Bunton's and I think all the ones that the stupid squirrels didn't dig up germinated. I was ready to kill the squirrels! LOL

Bread and butter pickles are some good eats! Would you mind sharing your recipe?

Lewisville, MN(Zone 4a)

How about a brand new recipe?
My wife came up with these last summer when we were real long on 4 to 5 inch cukes. Each jar has one hot pepper of choice. Oh, so goood!
I'll get the recipe when she returns home later.

Sqwarrel stew and cukes....mMmMm! LOL! New recipe! BBQ the nut buckets! LOL!

I will toss you my rabbits. Man I got wild hares like you would not beleive. I done mind a few,but just about every time I turn around I am dang near tripping on a bunny. Then its like they are almost tame too.

Summerville, SC(Zone 9b)

Yum I am looking forward to your new recipe country. I buy the most wodrful pickles from a place in SC they are called Spicy Garlic Dills and they are divine! They are in cut in chip style and hotter than hades with all the garlic and caynne that is in them but they are sweet too and crunch when you bite them I love them. I wish I had a recipe like them. I pay $6.50 a pint but they are so worth it LOL!
Her eis how my Pepeno cukes are looking! I have baby cukes all on them now. Still waiitng for the lemon to start producing they are slow growers compared to the Pepinos so it seems. I grew both from seed.

stephanie - I haven't lived in Tennessee since 1977. I did have lots of recipes at one time, but during one of our many moves over the years, the place where we had excess stuff stored burned down, and my old recipes went up in smoke!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I have 2 lemon cukes on my vines!! Woot!

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Here's my first Armenian cuke of the season... The vines are loaded!

Looks great, Kelly! It was too dark for me to take pics of my cukes tonight, but I'll be out there first thing in the morning!

Here's my first baby of the season.

Shapely! Yet curious!! LOL! Awwww! May you have many more!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

This is a lemon cucumber, so it'll be a short round cuke. Not your typical cucumber. It's my first time growing them, so I have no idea what I'm doing really.

Phoenix, AZ(Zone 9a)

Let me know how they taste - I was tempted to plant them but didn't. I have rotten luck with regular cukes - never can quite get the timing right. The Armenians rock and love my heat so it's pretty much a no brainer for me - lol...

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Honeybee, Marketmore has a good flavor and is crisp.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Thanks, Calalily. When I checked this morning, the cucumbers were starting to sprout their "true leaves"

So far the slugs have left them alone - I'm assuming the Sluggo Plus and coffee beans are working.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Man its pickle growing weather here....I really got to get my containers situated so they can get climbing, I have buds butmy area is not ready!

Just spent the morning moving umteen pots around to wher eI think I want them, but still much work to do and still working on potting peppers

Deep South Coastal, TX(Zone 10a)

Has anyone grown Babylon cucumber? I planted those a few weeks ago.

Pittsboro, NC(Zone 7a)

My Lemon cucumbers are blooming like crazy! And finally I see some fruit setting. One or two have what looks like bloom end rot.

I'm growing the Armenian cucumber for the first time this year. It's doing great but I wish I'd put it on a bigger trellis, its going over the wall, but has lots of little cucumbers on it so won't be long I'll be dippin them in some veggie dip.
Someone mentioned trampoline. I put my kid's old trampoline up but with high poles, then put field fence around it to grow gourds on, next year it will probably be for my cucumbers and yard long beans. I left an opening on one side like a door and will be adding some solar lights in it so the kids will have a neat place to hang out, if it gets too hot in there I can easily add a mister. They're already talking about a camp out in there.

This pic was taken a couple weeks ago, its alot bushier now.

Here's one of my lemon cucumbers this morning. It's starting to turn slightly yellow, from it's green state. When are these things ready to harvest?

stephanie - I have a melon that looks just like your cucumber!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

LOL I bet your melon is bigger than my cucumber, though!

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

Right now it is ^_^ How big's your cucumber going to get?

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My cuke wont' get much bigger at all, but it will continue to turn more yellow. My DH isn't a fan of cukes, just pickles, and I read that these were sweet, crisp, and perfect for one person, which is why I'm growing them.

Charlotte, NC(Zone 7b)

stephanie - I love pickles. Mount Holly has some "sugar free" ones that I buy.

Watseka, IL(Zone 5a)

Well, my cukes are in containers.. A couple weeks ago I lined these guys out in the planting area and I had intended to dig the pots into the ground, yank that daylily and with all the rain was not able to so now the cukes have climbed the fence and have to stay as they are! Owell.. Im sure they will be fine! They are blooming like mad now!

ANd drat, memory fails me as to that DL... what is it? Dont know! I got it last year though.. hope I can find the tag!

My new favorite cuke is 'Yellow Submarine' from Burpee. They can get HUGE almost overnight, but are never bitter. The vines are very vigorous and disease-free. My main problem is harvesting - the fruits are a light green color and are really camouflaged within the plant. So I've ended up with a couple of 11" beauties as a result. But they still tasted great! Few seeds too.

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

My first Marketmore 76.

Ditto on Stephanie's question. How do you know when a lemon cuke is ready to pick? I've got lemon boy tomatoes and have finally figured out when to pick them after letting a few go too long, and don't want to make the same mistake on these cucumbers!

Fort Worth, TX(Zone 8a)

I picked my lemon cucumber when the yellow stripes just started to show up on the top of the cuke near the stem. If you wait too long, the prickly things on the outside are not fun to handle! I washed the cuke using a vegetable scrubber to remove those prickly things and it worked great! I've only gotten 2 lemon cukes so far, but I saw TONS of females on the vines last night when I was out inspecting, so hopefully, we'll have lots more soon!

Gilbert, AZ

Thanks!!
