We planted some cukes Tuesday. We use plastic mulch. Seeds are planted every 19".
Planted Scorates, Tasty Jade & Fanfare. Don't know about first 2, but Fanfare is a great cucumber!
Row was 325 feet long.
CUCUMBERS for 2010 - WHOSE IN?
Well, you should get some cucumbers out of all of that for sure!
Oh...and I also got some Mouse Melons (Melothria scabra) ....which are very close to cucumbers.
Y'all have given me so many for my list next year!
I've got lemon cucumbers going here is the Phoenix area. Is their vining different from other varieties? Also, having never grown cukes before, what kind of fertilizing do they require?
Good questions, Crista! This is the first year I've grown lemon cukes, so I'll be watching for an answer.
I've grown lemon cucumbers a couple of years now, and they are not that different than any other type in terms of vining (perhaps not quite as prolific foliage as some varieties). I grow mine in Earthboxes, which have fertilizer planted into the box, so have never had to consider anything besides that. I don't think they are exceptionally heavy feeders, so a good all-purpose fertilizer should be fine.
Just brought my baby cukes in the house from the GPS tonight.. weather mand say severe frost... uGH! Well mightnot be the first time we have seen snow in May...
Yep, we have a frost warning tonight also. I'm so tired of carrying flats of plants in and out. My tomatoes still haven't been outside, and theoretically next weekend is our last frost date. How sad is that?
One of my cucumbers are really taking off. I think its my National Pickling. They have flowers that are just about to open. I am waiting and waiting and waiting for them to finally open. It seems like forever. Maybe...next week.
My taters started coming up, but they crawled back in the ground.. Cant say I blame them, but now thats sad.
Sad will be tomorrows corn report adn how many farmers might have to do a replant. Now I remember why we always olanted later than most... Its ok to combine in the snow! But planting? NOT!
Corn shouldn't be a problem. The growing point is well in the ground yet & I don't think it will get cold enough to freeze 2" down into the ground.
News media likes to scare the town people!
I'm not sure it will freeze here, & I am way up north. Isn't that cold yet at this hour.
Well, we got corns that are 3-4 inches already. The frost did not seem to harm it. In fact Im not so sure we got any frost. It got reallly cold, the air had a strong nip to it, but we got lucky. North of here though, not so sure. I brought my vegs into the house. Next time they go in bigger pots and outdoors
Hi just popped in here to look around! I put in Pepino and Lemon Cukes this year. I plant my cukes along my fence and they do great. I wanted to try the Pepino becuase it looks like the English ones I normally pay $2 or more for in the grocery. They seem to be doign OK so far. I planted the seeds in pots in April and they have been in the ground about a month now.
Deb
Hi Crista!
I have never had much luck with regular cukes here in Phoenix. It always gets too hot too fast for them. I grow Armenian cukes until the cows come home though - lol...
I would make sure the cukes get afternoon shade now that we are getting hot temps. I would think a general purpose fertilizer would be fine, maybe higher on the P as they are a fruiting plant...
Well, my 2007 cucumber seeds failed to sprout - so guess what? I was in Earth Fare today and a package of cucumber seeds jumped right into the cart and came home with me!
Honeybee it must be catching! I had a bay and a chive plant do the same thing to me when I was at Whole Foods yesterday. Then they carjacked us and made us drive over to Abide a While Nursery to pick up their accomplices, Oregano, Lime and Chocolate Mint, as well as Sun Sugar and Tumbling Tom Tomatoes! Then they made us drive home and swear we would put them in the ground!
Deb :)
Deb - why do we let them do that to us? While I was in Earth Fare drooling over all their lovely fresh produce, I wondered why I grow vegetables at all. It would be soooo much easier to buy theirs.
I was up early this morning sowing the black turtle beans my hubby loves so much.
Can't answer the former, but I'm sure it has something to do with the latter (big smile)
podster - I can taste it from here. I keep looking at cucs in the supermarket, but the price puts me off. I can't understand why they cost so much when each vine produces so many fruit!
I think I'm gonna try Spacemaster next year. What do you use as a support for them, pod?
They are small vines. One I built a trellis for and the others are growing on tomato cages. Tomato cages are what I used last year too. I kept them picked while small and they produced a long time. You still have time to plant them for this year. I make successive plantings thru the summer/fall and have a steady supply of fresh cucumbers.
I have some planted, 3 of 3 different varieties. Will check into the tomato cages. Great idea!
I have a tiny patch of sun at the corner of my patio. I stuck a trellis in the ground and planted cuke seeds, just to see what would happen. We had so many cukes from that spot that we got sick of eating them. My new SIL couldn't believe it, all that food from such a tiny patch of dirt. Now I do 2 or 3 trellises every year, so easy and plenty to share. If you have lots, remember that your local food pantry can use the extras.
cool stephanie!
Great idea, Stephanie! I love recyling old things into new ideas, too.
I finally got around to sowing my cucumber seeds this past weekend. It's rained ever since, so I hope they don't rot in the ground. If they do, there's still more in the package. These are "Marketmore" haven't tried them before.
Usually there are lots of volunteers coming up around the garden, but this year there don't seem to be any. Perhaps the very cold winter we had was too much for them.
Love the new trellis Steph!
I like that too! Been thinking bigger though.. NEED SWING SET! LOL!
Ha ha ha - a swing set!
Or ho's about a jungle jim? hehehehe! Zukes, cukes, loofas...all things viney!
Very cool, Steph. A great find for your plants, and an awesome job of recycling.
My DH thought I was insane when I asked him to go buy it while I was on the way out the door to work! LOL
That trampoline inthe background would make an awesome plant climber! hehehe!
Except it's in the neighbor's backyard! LOL
We will not tell! I picture wisteria, trumpet vines, clematis, aww what the heck, loofa too! LOL!
Well, I bumped up the cukes a couple of days ago, they grew 4 inches already and some got flowers.
My Tiller chickens are not working fast enough to prepare their site for planting.. so there goes my back... They are supposed to de-grass and weed this area, but it still looks like Area 57.....and now I got rains coming again.. hmmm.. that ought to make the weeding go faster, unless the humididity is a killer..
I think wisteria and trumpet vine are on the invasives lists for Texas, so I wouldn't plant those.
Well somewhere between Thursday morning at 6 a.m. and Thursday evening around 5 p.m. my cucumbers sprouted! They must have enjoyed the rain because on Sunday when we looked out the window, that particular raised bed looked like a lake. Thankfully, all my beds have "well drained soil"
I also have soybeans in that bed, and they look okay too.
