Indoor Blooms & things that get you through the winter #2

Phoebe - nice arrangement!

Every time I glance at the title to this thread, the song with the line "whatever gets you through the night, all right, all right", I think by John Lennon, pops into my head and won't go out!

Hi Wintergarener, welcome and what a lovely window you have there! I can see why Phoebe likes it so much, but her's is none to shabby!! Noticed a lovely Orchid Phoebe, holding out on us?

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Ha! ^_^...I dabble...

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Phals are great.

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Thats what I do with AV's. ^_^

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

LOL! I wasn't gonna say anything...but you have a couple of secretes yourself!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

LOL

Boojum, that particular window is in my upstairs bath. I've designed several windows in my house similarly, with glass shelves and brackets. It's very easy to do. Here's how: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/2009/09/creating-window-garden.html

NICE, Kevin.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - very. Could never really get into houseplants - especially with cats.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I have two cats and since they showed up, my houseplant count has been cut to 1/3. That being said, I still have 50. I've learned a lot. Some plants they just don't bother with. Those just need to be bolted in place so they don't knock them over. Hanging them from the ceiling helps - especially for the tasty plants, of which, I have very few left. I also grow their own oat grass. The male cat could mow my lawn considering how much grass he eats. The female lies down and rolls around in the catnip, so I keep buying a new one of that for her. It helps keep them distracted from the others. They don't bother with cacti and succulents. They try to use my yucca "tree" as a scratching post. Had to move it. It's at a bad angle for them now.

Kevin, I tried building shelves like you have - 'cause I love 'em! Too bad, though. My windows are vinyl so the brackets have to go into the wall. The southern most, brightest window is a double and has too wide a span to put a shelf without center supports. I'm 'boo-hoo-ing' over it! : ( Yours sure is pretty! I can only have a shelf like that in the bathroom and kitchen: see photo. I have such tiny windows! : ( super sad.

is that a pakaderm in the window

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yes, there's two plastic ones and a wooden one.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

"Those just need to be bolted in place so they don't knock them over. " The cats or the plants? LOL

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Nice shelves--I like the cacti, and would that be a clivia in the BR?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Cats love to eat plants.

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yes, but they only eat some plants. Bolting the cats down is a good idea! But, I guess that would be inhumane, so I meant the plants.

Yup, phoebe, that's two clivia.

Valatie, NY(Zone 5a)

Sofonisba - Looks like you found a solution to the vinyl window issue, by mounting your brackets to the wall.

I have two cats. Only one, named Tiger, has shown any horticultural interest, and that, mercifully, is limited to my spider plant. Cat grass solved the chewing problem. I planted the seeds in a six inch clay pot, and two weeks later kitty had her own, special pot to devour, and left the spider plant alone. Here's proof: http://www.agardenforthehouse.com/2009/10/tip-got-cats-plant-cat-oat-grass.html

i have a bunch of wooden elephants all over the house

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I like your window gardens, Harper. No cats here but I found a baby slug in one of my orchids today......

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Bill, the wooden elephant is my favorite.

Your cats will love you for it Victor!

Thanks Kathy. Sorry about the slug. They were my no. 1 enemy this year.

Love the cosmos painting, Jo Ann! Very nice window gardens, folks. I have a shelf under the kitchen window, but we have a porch, so it's too dark to grow much---and the shelf in the LR is not very well organized---that faces west---I have no south windows!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Lots of houseplants. Very few blooming ones. I really wanted a jasmine. Just too dry here for that. Have lots of epiphylum/jungle cacti type plants. THey aren't old enough to produce any blooms yet.

Here's the room with the most light. It used to be a much more dense jungle... before I had houseplant overload and then the cats. Please forgive. Haven't gotten around to renovating this room yet.

Used to have dedicated shelves in the basement for plants too.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Do you still have those shelves? Great plants! I have small inadequate light shelves--wish I had your space! The reflective material is a great idea. What is the hanging plant in the corner that looks like dreds?

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Yes, I do. In the spring I grow my annual and veggie seedlings on them. It's just aluminum foil in the back. The plant in the corner was a rat tail cactus. It's gone now. A casualty of neglect, I think. I have it logged in my journal. I'll have to look it up.

Vet bills are atrousus.Dental surgery for Ben today ,approx $400.00

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

harper does the foil help?

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Wow, Harper you got some houseplants there.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Nice set-up! I'm sorry about the rat tail cactus...It was a beauty!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I'm sorry about a lot of my houseplants. I had one year of overwhelm and lost so much. Oh well. Live and learn. Thanks everyone!

Bill, I put the foil up when I assembled the shelves, so I have no comparison. That being said, yes, I think it helps. Wish I could put it on all four sides.

My amaryllis bulbs just showed up!!!! The UPS man banged on the door so loud, I think my heart jumped out of my chest. I gotta go find it...

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Silver mylar also works well as a light reflector, and might be more durable than foil
Whadja get? whadja get???!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

Yeah, whadja get??

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

I got: Amaryllis 'Dancing Queen', Amaryllis 'Double Record' and 10 large Narcissus Ziva bulbs. Still have Amaryllis 'Aphrodite' on its way. Yippieeeeeee!!!!

South China, ME(Zone 5a)

All very pretty!!!

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Should be Abbaryllis 'Dancing Queen'.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

GROAN!!! Victor! (Did you know my cell phone ring tone is "Ring-Ring" by Abba?)
