I'm really proud of this Velvet Leaf Philo. It resides on a shelf in my master bath. It was much smaller when I got it and I find it to be a slow grower. I have shared cuttings with other DG'ers and created another plant that I took to my office.
I just wanted to gloat 'and share'...
Velvet Leaf Philo
That is lovely! Great growing Tracey! I have two of the velvet leaf Philo's, always a favorite.
Thanks Linda.. Will it climb? I'm not sure if it will or not.. It dangles well though..
I've always grown them in hanging baskets or just little pots sitting on tables, but I imagine they would climb if given a trellis to cling to. The two small ones I have now are just sitting on tables and trailing out of the containers.
If it will climb I may put a trellis behind it. I would love to see it climb up that wall, on a support of course. Hmm.. Guess I'm off to 'Google'.
I was wondering if you gave them the room and the right climbing conditions if they would get as big as some of the other philos do
What a beauty! I've had one of these for about 12 years, but had never seen another like it. Mine is small still, but I've always just enjoyed it an never tried to get it to grow more. I almost let it die out once, but luckily was able to revive it. It's great to see one as pretty as yours, and now I'm determined to keep mine healthy and growing.
So they grow slowly? I snitched a bit from a friends hanging basket yesterday :). Lucky me, she didn't care.... I think the leaf is so, so pretty on this one.
3jsmom,
They grow slowly in comparison to other philos. I think my Philodendren Brasil grows slower than this Velvet Leaf, or just as slow. Maybe I need to do something different with it.. but I assumed it too was just a slow grower... Seems it, and my Satin Leaf Pothos grow at the same snail speed... If anyone has tips on how to make those two 'step it up' please, please let me know.
Thanks to all for the nice compliments.. of course, that is what I was fishing for!! : ) I was hoping others would find it pretty too.
Makes a novice feel good to hear someone else say, "That plant is just beautiful!!" : ) : )
I know HOW to make them grow faster BUT I warn you, if you get the mix too strong it will kill it...quarter strength MG liquid fertilizer, every time
And probably best to try that in the spring, right? I would even mix it weaker than that for now. What do you think?
Trina, Is that only for the Velvet Leaf or for all 3 I mentioned above?
weaker now yes, and yes for all three...however do NOT do this for the golden pothos or it will be become an uncontrolable monster that WILL damage drywall and plaster trying to climb!!!!!! Learned that one the hard way LOL
No worries Girlie, my golden pothos doesn't need any help at all. I have one that was massive and some less smaller ones of different sizes. I just pruned the biggest back a few days ago.
Ha! I also discovered a bit of disappointment. I have a 'heart leaf philo' that I moved to a different location a couple weeks ago, with a tad more sunlight... and it appears that it is not a heart leaf philo at all.. I guess it is a jade pothos., since it is starting to variegate. Will it go back to solid green if I put in back in the spot I took it from? I really like having one that is solid green.
never seen a jade pothos, what colors is it variegating too?
Hmmm, I don't know if I have ever seen jade pothos. Wonder how you can tell it from the philo? I'm gonna go research.
LOL...nope not gonna do it...I'll just HAVE to have one then! LOL
Not this year, but maybe in spring, lol :).

Scroll down to see the actual difference between pothos and philodendron if your inquiring mind wanted to know :).
Jade Pothos: This is an uncommon variety that is often confused with the Heart Leaf Philodendron. It is simply a Golden or Marble Queen that has been allowed to lose its variation. The leaves are glossy and pure green.
This is where I got my info from... http://houseplants.suite101.com/article.cfm/guide_to_pothos

btw, I think those I talk with the most are viewing and posting in this thread...
I am the Negotiations Manager for the financial company in which I'm employed... and they decided that I needed a brand new computer as my job has expanded greatly in the last several months (due to the economy I'm sure).. In the process, about an hour after receiving the new computer.. they also must have seen the 'need' to block DG from my accesses.. So now I can access absolutely EVERYTHING on the world wide web... EXCEPT Daves Garden!!!! Jerks!! I thought it might have been a fluke or accident. I rechecked yesterday so now I have been ticked off for a full two days.. as I only access it during lunch or breaks. They have never had a problem with it before... and we have employees that surf FaceBook and IT has not been blocked!!!! JERKS, JERKS!!!
So if you don't see me around during the day M-F, you know why...... JERKS!! Why they do that???JERKS!!!!
Hugs. We'll just be happy to see you on the weekends/evenings. It will be alright :)...
Wow! When that pic is enlarged that window looks filthy!! I actually just got up to go look at it and check it out.... while it is not perfectly clean, most of that is due to it being 'frogged' up.. cold outside, and warm inside... -- Now, I have to clean my windows!!! I cant have ya'll seeing that....lol
yeah! and I don't do windows, of course most of my windows are taller than me even in my best imagination! LOL
Miss Daisy, I have the heart leaf philo, and it's pretty big, so come spring trades, you'll have one too.
oh yeah between us will make sure we all have the same aroids...LOL
Awe!! 3jsmom.... That is so kind of you.. Trina is right.. We's gotta all stick together.
and well as long as you all have room...as many of them as we can get...LOL
That is too cute.. and I am no longer concerned about my window being dirty.... ; )
LOL thought you might find it funny! Mekos sent it to me
I see you have learned to post links now. Good Job!!! and yes, it made me smile and I called the boys in there to look at it. The 8 yr old (oops he'll be 9 Wednesday) got a real kick out of it.. he giggled at it for what seemed like several minutes..
Thanks for sharing!
I totally forgot you have younger kids that would enjoy that....did you see my answer about the 2 places....tcs showed me how to do it so I wanted to put both on there cause I'm very proud of that place in Missouri....33 acres all mine...PAID FOR is the biggy started buying it right after I graduated HS...there were times I almost lost it but it's paid off now...and my yearly taxes are really really cheap...but at least I know I always have a place to go no matter what
Now Dave why'd ya have to go show me that? Now you know I'm gonna want one! LOL
Hmm. Dave you have done two things here.. You have enlightened me on another dilemma I have been trying to figure about for a couple hours now..
and
You have me confused... It was sold to me and later ID'd as a Velvet Leaf Philo, though we know the confusion with common name. (funny that is what I'm better at remembering)... it has a velvety texture.. Hmmm...
Back to the first issue at hand....
In a trade, another DG'er asked for some of my Philodendron verrucosum.. Didn't know what that was so I had to go look it up. It said Velvet Leaf Philo, so I sent her some. When she got it she said that she received the "Velvet Leaf Philo, but was wondering if I had forgotten the Philodendron Verrucosum.. -- So I guess we are both confused...
Aha...
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/90662/
and
http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/100643/
They both go by the common name Velvet Leaf Philo
I just love when someone asks me for something by it's botanical name I always send back the following
"for us lay people who have no clue what you just said what common name are you refering too?" or "I'm not sure which one tha is in my very large collection can you please post a picture for me?"
Dave, that leaf is so lovely. It makes me think of an angel flying... P. verrucosum is a climber, right?
