To kill the rhizoctonia fungi that cause brownpatch in your lawn, mix one tablespoon Arm and Hammer Baking Soda, one tablespoon Wesson Corn Oil, and one gallon water. Spray a light mist of the solution on your lawn and make sure your fertilizer does not contain excess nitrogen.

Ooohh, wish I had known that a few years ago. Formerly nice lawn turned ugly one rainy, humid summer...

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

me too dear, just hope I can remember this solution lol

When you want to link to another page, go to that page, right click the address bar, (this one says: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1061494/). When you right click, a menue will drop down and you pick "copy" from it. Then you go to the page that you want to put the link on and in the text box for posting replys to the thread, right click again. the menu will come up again and you pick "paste". Always make for sure and certain that you have put a space or two before and after the new address or the link will not work. You can edit it to work by just going back and putting the space in.
Here is an example of how it looks when you did not put a space before the link:http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1061494/
Here is how it looks when you do: http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1061494/

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Like I will Lynnie ??? lol Thanks Junie do that all the time on other pages just don't know why I didn't think it would work here, Duhhh. Hey Moon, your turn give us a tip.

Fill a large bucket about 2/3 full of sand. add 1 quart of inexpensive motor oil to it and allow to soak in for a couple days. When getting shovels and spades etc ready for winter, after cleaning, work the shovel down into the oily sand and let sit for a while...when removed, the blade is clean and protected for winter storage (you can use this year round to protect tools from rust) Also works for shears, pruners and loppers.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Cool, do you know how many rusty tools I replace???

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

If ya take a piece of sandpaper to them before you put them in the bucket, they come out looking almost new. The mix also helps keep the fasteners lubricated and easy to open and close.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Can I do that to my car????

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

I think the sand might scratch the paint....lol

To get rid of warts, put a piece of duct tape on it and leave for 7 days. Then remove and file with emory board or pumice stone.

To prevent ear infections, use a few drops of alcohol and glycerin after showering or swimming. You can make your own mix by using 1 ounce of glycerin to a 16 ounce bottle of isopropyl alcohol.

All it takes is 3 or 4 drops into the ear canal, wait a few seconds and drain. The alcohol displaces any water and kills bacteria.

To avoid spreading fungal diseases when transplanting seedlings or plants into pots, clean pots and flats thoroughly by soaking them for ten minutes in a bathtub filled with warm water and one tablespoon Cascade dishwashing powder, then scrubbing the pots in the solution with a stiff brush. Rinse clean and let the pots dry thoroughly in the sun.

To prevent damping-off from killing seedlings, spray the affected part of the plants with a mixture of equal parts hydrogen peroxide and water.

alcoho and vinegar work for ear infections. mix half and half. hold head to one side and fill ear. after about fifteen seconds, tilt head to other way and drain. alcohol dries any water in the ear and the vinegar kills bacteria or fungus. an eye, ear, nose and throat specialist gave this prescription to a friend of mine.

Hi Jim, hope you and Jo have a very Merry Christmas and will catch up on all the fun after things settle down for you. Check out the new poetry thread I started before you go, think you will like it.

I got this in an e-mail today. Lots of good hints.

A professor at CCNY for a physiological psych class told his class about bananas. He said the expression "going bananas" is from the effects of bananas on the brain.. Read on:

Never, put your banana in the refrigerator!!!
This is interesting.
After reading this, you'll never look at a banana in the same way again.

Bananas contain three natural sugars - sucrose, fructose and glucose combined with fiber.. A banana gives an instant, sustained and substantial boost of energy.

Research has proven that just two bananas provide enough energy for a strenuous 90-minute workout. No wonder the banana is the number one fruit with the world's leading athletes.

But energy isn't the only way a banana can help us keep fit. It can also help overcome or prevent a substantial number of illnesses and conditions, making it a must to add to our daily diet.

Depression: According to a recent survey undertaken by MIND amongst people suffering from depression, many felt much better after eating a banana. This is because bananas contain tryptophan, a type of protein that the body converts into serotonin, known to make you relax, improve your mood and generally make you feel happier.

PMS: Forget the pills - eat a banana. The vitamin B6 it contains regulates blood glucose levels, which can affect your mood.

Anemia : High in iron, bananas can stimulate the production of hemoglobin in the blood and so helps in cases of anemia.

Blood Pressure: This unique tropical fruit is extremely high in potassium yet low in salt, making it perfect to beat blood pressure. So much so, the US Food and Drug Administration has just allowed the banana industry to make official claims for the fruit's ability to reduce the risk of blood pressure and stroke.

Brain Power: 200 students at a Twickenham (Middlesex) school ( England ) were helped through their exams this year by eating bananas at breakfast, break, and lunch in a bid to boost their brain power. Research has shown that the potassium-packed fruit can assist learning by making pupils more alert.

Constipation: High in fiber, including bananas in the diet can help restore normal bowel action, helping to overcome the problem without resorting to laxatives.

Hangovers: One of the quickest ways of curing a hangover is to make a banana milkshake, sweetened with honey. The banana calms the stomach and, with the help of the honey, builds up depleted blood sugar levels, while the milk soothes and re-hydrates your system.
Heartburn: Bananas have a natural antacid effect in the body, so if you suffer from heartburn, try eating a banana for soothing relief.

Morning Sickness: Snacking on bananas between meals helps to keep blood sugar levels up and avoid morning sickness

Mosquito bites: Before reaching for the insect bite cream, try rubbing the affected area with the inside of a banana skin. Many people find it amazingly successful at reducing swelling and irritation.

Nerves: Bananas are high in B vitamins that help calm the nervous system.

Overweight and at work? Studies at the Institute of Psychology in Austria found pressure at work leads to gorging on comfort food like chocolate and chips. Looking at 5,000 hospital patients, researchers found the most obese were more likely to be in high-pressure jobs. The report concluded that, to avoid panic-induced food cravings, we need to control our blood sugar levels by snacking on high carbohydrate foods every two hours to keep levels steady.

Ulcers: The banana is used as the dietary food against intestinal disorders because of its soft texture and smoothness. It is the only raw fruit that can be eaten without distress in over-chronicler cases. It also neutralizes over-acidity and reduces irritation by coating the lining of the stomach.

Temperature control: Many other cultures see bananas as a "cooling" fruit that can lower both the physical and emotional temperature of expectant mothers. In Thailand , for example, pregnant women eat bananas to ensure their baby is born with a cool temperature.

Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD): Bananas can help SAD sufferers because they contain the natural mood enhancer tryptophan.

Smoking &Tobacco Use: Bananas can also help people trying to give up smoking. The B6, B12 they contain, as well as the potassium and magnesium found in them, help the body recover from the effects of nicotine withdrawal.

Stress: Potassium is a vital mineral, which helps normalize the heartbeat, sends oxygen to the brain and regulates your body's water balance.. When we are stressed, our metabolic rate rises, thereby reducing our potassium levels. These can be rebalanced with the help of a high-potassium banana snack.

Strokes: According to research in The New England Journal of Medicine, eating bananas as part of a regular diet can cut the risk of death by strokes by as much as 40%!

Warts: Those keen on natural alternatives swear that if you want to kill off a wart, take a piece of banana skin and place it on the wart, with the yellow side out. Carefully hold the skin in place with a plaster or surgical tape!

So, a banana really is a natural remedy for many ills.. When you compare it to an apple, it has four times the protein, twice the carbohydrate, three times the phosphorus, five times the vitamin A and iron, and twice the other vitamins and minerals. It is also rich in potassium and is one of the best value foods around So maybe its time to change that well-known phrase so that we say, "A banana a day keeps the doctor away!"

PASS IT ON TO YOUR FRIENDS
PS: Bananas must be the reason monkeys are so happy all the time! I will add one here; want a quick shine on our shoes?? Take the INSIDE of the banana skin, and rub directly on the shoe....polish with dry cloth.. Amazing fruit !!!

Wow gonna plant a banana tree after reading this one Juny, seems they will cure most anything that ails a person Thanks!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I love bananas! DH is severely allergic to them.. can't eat anything banana, his throat closes up, stomach cramps the old heave-ho.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Yall are bananas!! I don't know any of you lol

Keep dogs, cats, raccoons, and squirrels out of your garbage cans by sprinkling Black Pepper around the trash bins. All these animals have a keen sense of smell. They smell the pepper and take off for someone else's garbage cans.

In French the word for garbage is ordures

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Gotta love that Dr. Oz. Did you know that pepto bismol or cranberrys will kill the H-Pilori virus that causes ulcers and digestive issues that usually require high doses of antibiotics?

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

Is that why I have a cast-iron stomach? I could eat ordures and it doesn't bother me. Because I love cranberries so very, very much!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

That is cuz you are so sweet ya don't notice the tart....grin

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

awww, thanks!

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

8-) truth is easy to say....grin

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

8-) back at ya, Jean.

Watering gardenias with coke increases the acidity in the soil, which boosts plant performance. The surgar in the coke feeds microorganisms in the soil, increasing the organic matter in the soil.

To inrease the acidity of the soil, sprinkle a handful of Epsom Salt around the plants.

Occasionally water the gardenias with a mixture of two tablespoons white vinegar to one quart water. They love acid soil and grow best in soils with a ph below 6.5

Fertilize with instant tea, coffee grounds or tea bags buried in dirt. Will give nutrients they love.

Gardenias wilt quickly if placed in a vase because the stems do not take up water well. Display by floating the flowers in a shallow bowl of water.

(Zone 5b)

Flowers, where did you hear that about watering gardenias with coke? That sounds like crazy talk *grin*

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

You didn't know that Lynnie? Shammme lol.

(Zone 5b)

I don't grow gardenias, they sound fussy ( I wrote fuzzy by accident, boy I'd love my fuzzy socks right now....not done runnin' around) are they fussy?

Kenmore, NY(Zone 6a)

I don't think we can grown them up here, Lynnie. Not outside, anyways.

(Zone 5b)

yup, FUSSY! *grin*

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

Hummm you may find this interesting: When planted as a companion, garlic seems to enhance the growth of roses, strawberries, fruit trees, cabbage, and tomatoes. However as a compnaion plant, garlic seems to inhibit the growth of peas, beans, and asparagus.

To remove garlic smells from your hands, wash your hands with a small handful of baking soda. you can also use tomatoe juice, toothpast, liquid fabric softener,or white vinegar.

(Zone 5b)

I bet Jim knows all about this.....

Delhi, LA

I knew that bathing in tomato juice would help remove the odor of being sprayed by a skunk. I didn't know garlic would help or hinder the growth of anything. I did know that to much garlic powder on spaghetti would make your wife sleep on the other side of the bed with her back to you.

Prairieville, LA(Zone 9a)

LOL Jim. Did you tell her it was a public service? Just trying to keep the vampires away...grin
