With all the talk on enviromental issues, I personally feel as most that natural remedys should be tried before dragging out the harsh artillery. This post will be on remedys for any or things that get our goat. Feel free to chime in
Natural Home and Garden Solutions
Found this interesting------to get rid of moles, place a transistor radio in hole playing hard rock music. That would run me off for sure lol If that doesn't work put laxitive in hole. I'm serious folks this is a remedy and might get your lawn fertilized too smile. And last but not least you can always put oil of peppermint on cotton balls and stuff in hole they hate the smell so I hear.
Venice here is one for your knat problem. Put basil in with catnip, it repels insects. Or you can put a garlic in plants to ward off insects.
I have a few gnats around. I'll try the garlic thing.
Ever notice that they fly around YOUR head, not anyone else?
Just never could figure out where they come from Smilely, just pop up out of thin air.
Great idea Flowers. Everyone has tried and true natural/organic solutions they use in both home and garden. This should be fun and informative. Smiley, you need to post the remedy you use when bringing outside plants in for the winter.
ok here is another one:: Put hot sauce in water in spray bottle to get rid of cock roaches never heard of that one.
sprinkle the tops of the pots you plant seeds in with a little cinnamon, it's a natural mold repellent
good one Trina.
ants won't cross a chalk line.
a lemon juice/baking soda paste is a great brass polish!
cat manure or Irish Spring soap will deter deer or racoons from your vegi garden.
Fabric softner and water makes great wallpaper remover
toothpaste will fill nail holes in plaster. Oh Oh gonna try this one-----white vinegar mixed with pennyroyal in water spray bottle will get rid of spiders in your home. Just spray corners ect
Put vitimen D in dog food and lavender oil or foam rubber in bedding to get rid of fleas
soy sauce will make the pain of a burn go away. tested this one already.
So will WD 40 tried that one. It also takes stains out of clothes just spray stain before washing. Took mustard and grease stain out of table cloth
powdered dishwasher detergent in a bucket of the hottest water will get motor oil out of anything! even white dress shirts!
Rub old tennis ball on floor to remove black marks on wood, tile and vinyl
Use old panyhose to keep wrapping paper rolls from getting ripped and wrinkled.(slip roll of paper into leg)
I like this Flowers.
Dryer sheets pined to your clothing will keep mosquitos at bay. I always do this when I'm mowing the yard. Usually just one on the back of my Tee shirt.
Baking soda and dishwashing liquid in water is about as good for powdery mildew on roses as anything I've tried.
A gal. of water laced heavily with dish washing liquid is great to kill wasps. Just dash it on the nest. You'll get every one of them.
Rub a wasp sting with moist tobacco is a good one or clorox is even better.
Avon skin so soft is a good mosquito repellent. Course the boys will kind of look at you funny.
One from Jo: Put celery stalks in cabbage when you cook it and it will help keep the odor down. When it's done just remove the celery. Doesn't change the tast
Another from my cook: Fresh ginger cooked in dry beans helps cut down on the flatulent effect. Figured jjs would like that one.
Golly, didn't know I knew that many.
One more, a birth control pill in your potted plants works wonders. A friend who worked for a doctor would get all his out of date birth control samples and use them in her plants. She had the prettiest plants I ever saw.
Very interesting tidbits everyone! I put a carrot in my sauce. It takes some of the acid away without having to add sugar or anything like that. Doesn't change the flavor.
yeah and who wants a pregnant begonia LOL Those are great Jim. Thanks everybody we are doing good and learning lots.
Cinder Blocks make great containers for sedums and succulents can also be stacked in various ways then planted with hens and chicks. Planted gourds with holes punched for drainage make cute annual flower pots for the garden. Can even be used for hanging baskets. Welcome not mats for slugs by sprinkling red cedar shavings the kind used for hamster cages around your plants slugs hate to crawl over it. Can also wrap foil around thestem and base of your plants Sew pockets on knees of old jeans and put foam rubber in pockets this is knee pads that won't slip while crawling around in garden
I know most of you folks don't have fire ants, but for those that do...Windex sprayed on the bites helps take the sting away and reduces the number of sores that form from the formic acid. (you can use a little sudsy ammonia, just be sure to rinse well after a couple minutes)
Did you know that grits sprinkled on a fire ant bed would kill them? Works.
A couple of moth balls in a potted plant will keep the cats away.
Jo uses moth balls under the car port to keep snakes at bay.
Moth balls under your bushs will keep wasps from building.
Sulphur around an out building will also chase snakes.
A dose of bird shot from the 20 guage will stop your neighbors dogs from pooping in your yard. Maybe I should have left that one off. Can't wait to see the comments.
Big problem we are having now is keeping the bears and cougars out of our yards.
We use a paintball gun Jim....gives proof that animals were where they shouldn't be. had a neighbor who met complaints with...Not my dog....when he started coming home with a bright orange backside, it kinda quelled that argument....grin
Mothballs in the attic keep squirrels and mice away...also keeps DHJim from doing any work up there....lol
Revitalize Azaleas with S.O.S pads, Bury the pads directly in the soil surrounding the plant. Watering breaks down the steel pads producing the iron that these plants need to survive and perform. Pouring beer on them will make them bloom profusly
I bloom profusely when you pour beer on me too....grin
LOL youre a nut moon
That's me. flowers.....grin
Coca Cola poured on a compost pile helps jump start the microorganisms and increases the acidity and the sugar feeds the microorganisms increasing the organic matter in the compost. Just make sure the coke is the real thing and flat. Put four tablespoons Tabasco Sauce and four tablespoons Ground Red Pepper in a quart of water and sprinkle over a turned pile, this keeps dogs from digging in it. Things to put in the pile are:fallen leaves, grass clippings, kitchen scraps (uncooked vegetables ad fruits.),peelings, eggshells, coffee grounds, teabags, newspaper. Keep it moist and turn occasionally with shovel and wait three to six months for nutrient enriched compost.
Put out coke in a pan and kill mice or rats. Doesn't matter if it is flat.
Really?? Do they die fast or crawl in the wall and smell?
they can't burp JJ and their eyes pop out lol
thanks flowers!!
and then they panic and run blind into the wall or cuboard and play hide and seek till you find em rofl Sorry Jim I couldn't resist.
Flowers, you have a weird sense of humor. Sounds a lot like me.
You usually find them dead a foot or so from where they drand it.
Flowers, Jim...I perfer the truly natural remedy for mice....Let the cat do it...no carcass to clean up ....grin
You soon have as many cats as mice. Remember the days when Momma had about 100.
Jim, does that coke work on moles too???
And no, I'm not sending Simba in to get them!
Fruit flies?
Try putting some apple cider vinegar in a small glass. BF found a shot glass works. Mix a little liquid dish soap with it. They love the vinegar, but the soap keeps them from getting back out :-)
Oh and Jim, put the gun down and back away!
