Coffee Break #23 - Counting down to Turkey!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

maria i am the only one here who likes giblet gravy - pearl onions in a cheese chream sauce is a must as well. no turnips. pumpkin pie and apple pie.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

Giblet gravy, of course, is there any other on Thanksgiving???

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

That thread on the boiled eggs was interesting. Never had it like that but my dad was from New Orleans and made oyster dressing for the holidays. My mom used the giblets from the turkey in hers.

We always had potatoe salad too, with mayo, mustard and boiled eggs and diced celery. Had Thanksgiving at a neighbors and they put vinegar in their potatoe salad. Anyone ever had it like that? Does potatoe have an 'e' at the end?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

jadajoy I have had potato salad with vinegar before but I like it with mustard better. Potato used to be spelled potatoe but no longer used. In Canada we used to spell it potatoue, well not really but we should have. In the the dahlianut dictionary one potato is a potat (with a soft "a") and 2 potats are potatii. Go ahead say it out loud...potatii. It's better than potatos.

South Hamilton, MA

'potatoe' spelling which caused such hilarity when Dan Quayle spelled it that way, is the second varient spelling after potato. It is not incorrect. Plural--try 'spuds'.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

LOL! Does that also work for tomatii?

'taters works too

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

I put vinegar in my potato(e) salad

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Like 57 states!

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

jada how did your dad make the oyster dressing? that i would like to try.

although maybe not with turkey and no hard boiled eggs either - i'd be banished to the shed for a couple days.

dnut when your dictionary goes to print i want a autographed copy please!

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I like 'taters' too! I lie 'ii' for all the botanical plurals except garlic which is just always garlic which is funky weird. English is not very sensical: I goose, 2 geese so should be 1 moose, 2 meese; 1 caboose, 2 cabeese.

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

LMAO dnut! LOLOL!

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

wha..I really don't know. Because my mom was from Georgia and did most of the cooking, whenever he was in the kitchen making that NOLA food, we pretty much stayed out of his way. ( I wish I had paid attention thou cause he made a mean gumbo).I would think instead of adding the giblets just add the raw oysters and bake. I wouldn't use oyster dressing to stuff the bird thou.

I second the autograph copy :-)

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

mmmmmmm gumbo mmmmmmmm

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Choose, cheese?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Good catch Victor! I have made a note that this must be corrected too! And what about 1 Snooze, 2 Sneeze :O

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Booze, beeze?

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

1 booze, 2 beeze. 1 beeze, 2 booze. 'I will have a beeze pleeze" I LIKE IT ^_^

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Beeze kneeze??

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Beeze don't have kneeze but they do have armpits.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

I know - I took a real nice pic of one and entered it in the contest and NOBODY voted for it! I went blind getting that shot.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

I voted for that one ^_^ but I also voted for pics with hoses in them.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Hoses??

S of Lake Ontario, NY(Zone 6a)

I cook turkey breasts instead of the whole bird - usually 2 for lots of leftovers. And I've been brining for many years now - makes the best, juiciest turkey that way. Giblet gravy too.

My son will be coming home on Wednesday next week, but told me he might be going to his girlfriends for dinner instead of here even though he doesn't like their cooking. So maybe just the 2 of us this year, so probably a lot smaller dinner. It will be only the 2nd time he hasn't been home for Thanksgiving dinner. Unless he talks Lindsey into coming here anyway.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Always a problem which house to go to. My son in laws mother is divorced, so she is willing to go wherever and it works very well for everyone.

Walmart is advertising you can do Thanksgiving for four for $20.00, including turkey, stuffing, potatoes , cranberries and pumpkin pie.

South Hamilton, MA

ordered sugar free pecan pie for thanksgiving. With butternut squash we won't need pumkin.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

Love pecan pie! Surprisingly the Wlamart here has excellent pecan, pumpkin and sweet potatoe pies. 2 for 6.00. Crust is not the best, filling is wonderful.

Jersey Shore, NJ(Zone 7a)

I had a pecan pie once and loved it! Sadly, I have never had it since. Does anyone have a recipe? Last year I brought 3 pumpkin pies to Thanksgiving dinner, all different recipes. The one that won the taste test was the simplest to make. It was the recipe on the side of a can of condensed milk!

Questa, NM(Zone 5b)

Just finished looking at all the winners of the photo contest. Wow!! Great job and congratulations to all the Northeast winners!!! Some of you that didn't win, know that I didn't know who you were, but voted for you because I loved your photos, then discovered you were my friends! I love it when that happens.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

4 daughters
Three take turns hosting. Its always Pot-luck with Host doing the turkey and potatoes.
None of the Holidays are goung to be lavish this year.
Kids dont care to decorate a tree and 2 daughters dont have jobs.

Salem Cnty, NJ(Zone 7b)

Weeze, try the pecan pie from Delicious Orchards on Rt 34 in Colts Neck. Deeeeelicious!!! with a capital D.

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

sorry about your daughters being out of work Joann - i know the feeling - although we (me) will be decorating a tree and celebrating although gift sharing will be limited.

Hannibal, NY(Zone 6a)

My two grandkids come the week after Thanksgiving to spend the night and help me decorate. We make a big party out of it. Tons of fun. Of course I get them some presents, but not a whole lot, but we just have such fun decorating.

It is horrible to be out of work, especially around the holidays. So sorry to hear that Jo Ann. Pot luck dinners are such fun. We just don't have enough people in our family. Although it is seeming to be a little pot luck, with Michelle saying, Mom, can you pick this up, Mom, would you bring some fresh veggies, Dad, can you make the rye bread dip.

Calgary, AB(Zone 3a)

Victor when sorting through my pics for the contest I noticed I am very ept at focusing on hoses rather than plants and alot of my pics have a hose in them. I supported the 'hose' photographers this year cuz I'm rooting for a Hose Catagory next year.

central, NJ(Zone 6b)

D-nut you crack me up.

Jo Ann, what field are your daughters in?

Weeze, I made a chocolate pecan pie last year that came out pretty good.

Thomaston, CT

I always add orange rind to my pumpkin pies---I like white meat turkey---for one meal---I get sick of turkey pretty quick, so everyone goes home with lots of leftovers. Am baking a kugli---grated potatoes, onions, butter, evaporated milk, eggs----it's my favorite, but I only make it twice a year because the potatoes have to be hand grated...lots of ouches.

Newport News, VA(Zone 11)

Kugli sounds delicious! Recipe?

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

This is cool. I love the show Timewarp.
