Boy was it windy last night and this morning. For some reason, last night when I was in bed I found the sound of it comforting rather than scary like I usually do. When I went out on the deck to go to work this morning, I just stood there for a few minutes and listened to the wind and watched the trees swaying in the dark.....it brought to mind watching ancient Gods dance....beautiful.
Apropos of Nothing v.4
I can't do round rocks, I need to be able to stack them to make my raised beds deep enough.
The wind last night was awesome. I love when there's a still moment, then you can hear this mighty rushing sound as the next gust approaches... so cool.
The wind here is usually more intimidating than cool. We are surrounded by dozens of trees that could crush our tiny little tube in a second. Fortunately, (knocking big time on wood here) all of those that have fallen have done minimal damage, and never to our home. I told DH when we moved here that I really wanted him to build a rops for our bed (kind of like a roll cage for heavy equipment).
Lynn, just wanted to let you know that we are thinking about you, and we know that tomorrow will go just fine. BTW.... I forgot to tell you that you may have started an epidemic with those sheets! I had to go to Costco Friday night to pick up a pair, and Mom got hers yesterday. My brother is getting some this week too! If anyone wants some WARM totally SNUGGLY and awesome sheets....Costco has these fleece sheets right now for about $40......so much snugglier than flannel it is unbelievable. Don't know how they will wear yet, but the first run is just heaven in the form of sheets!
Those sheets sound divine. Are they sold in sets, or can you buy flat and fitted separately? I buy King flat sheets for our Queen bed because we're both cover hogs... LOL
High winds used to scare the bejeezus out of me at our old house. We had lots of big trees all around us, and some of them were dead or had dead sections. We had one really huge branch drop just a few feet from the house one time... that was too close for comfort!
Having lived in the Midwest, I'm used to trees falling. Idiots there can't stand forest or undergrowth, so they turn everything into lawn with massive trees dotted here & there. Of course, massive trees are not intended to live without a buffer, and Midwest weather is terribly extreme, so there were always trees crashing down on our heads.
My neighbors also limbed up their previously gorgeous spruces to naked, ugly heights in order to make it "easier to mow around them."
I love flannel sheets year 'round, and the price at Costco every year is outrageous.
I like a tree nicely limbed up. :-)
More wind coming, they say.
Lynn, enjoy the day of relaxation tomorrow. Hope you get lots of warm blankets. Just think, when you get out you'll be on your way from feeling so much better!
Sheared of dead branches, sure. But a stately spruce whose branches sweep the ground? I don't think "ease of mowing" should be the main goal in landscaping.
My power keeps going out this time of year, for hours this afternoon thanks to the wind you all were feeling. Anyone have suggestions for battery-operated objects to have around the house? I just lay in bed & looked out the window, couldn't do much else.
"Anyone have suggestions for battery-operated objects to have around the house?"
I will not go there. I will not go there. I will NOT go there... *snickering like a 12 year old*
My DH is going in tomorrow to have his third skin cancer removed. Two were on his face, this one is on the calf of his leg.
Best wishes to him, Willow...
Patricia, I hope the procedure is as painless as possible for your DH.
I wish him good luck with the surgery and speedy healing.
I agree with Julie about the trees. I always think they look as though they are dancing. I've never worried about them falling.. they have plenty of buffer around them, so they all dance as though choreographed. I do not, however, garden underneath them in the wind. No sense in tempting fate. I am more concerned about limbs falling on my greenhouse than I am about trees falling on my house.
summerkid, several years ago I finally got the picture that with the wind comes power outages. (some people just take longer to learn...) So I started collecting oil lanterns. Not in a serious 'collector' kind of way, just in a 'I pick them up at Goodwill when I find them' kind of way. I like them better than candles when the power goes out. And flashlights. Really good ones that have a nice high beam. You need flashlights. And also pocket hand and foot warmers. Costco generally sells the hand warmers by the case this time of year.. Excellent for power outages and also for winter gardening.
Good luck to Lynn and Patricia's dh.
Willow, I hope your husband recovers quickly. I will be thinking about you tomorrow.
Summer, that line made me laugh out loud.Pony, you and I must think alike. GRIN...
I had my grandkids this past weekend. They love the Beattles and were singing along today, and I had to laugh. The 6 yr old was happily singing "She's got a chicken to ride". He didn't believe us when we told him it was "ticket" not "chicken", he thought we were teasing him.
Bahahaha! Well, that's how I'll be singing it from now on...
Good luck to you tomorrow, Lynn. Better get well fast, you'll have daylilies and cyclamen to plant... hehe.
And Bamboo!!!!
Going to bed now. My battery is almost dead. Don't you say a word Summer or Pony!!!
*doesn't go there*
Goodnight! :)
Ah, now that the power is back on AGAIN, I could tell a story here had I no shame ...
Lynn, good advice & best wishes for tomorrow.
It was a good day to be mostly without power, since I was feeling lousy in a non-specific way. So I didn't mind sitting in bed watching the storm or dozing on the couch in the pitch blackness, reading a bit when the power is on. I am reading an old book called "Woodswoman." Anyone every heard it? It appears to be set in the late '60s, early '70s, written by a woman named Anne who lived by herself in the Adirondacks.
That sounds like a good book, Summerkid. Reminds me of The Curve of Time, a classic book accounting a woman's adventures sailing in British Columbia with her 4 or 5 kids. On a 20 foot boat. It was written in the 1930's as I recall. An excellent book, but made me wish I'd been able to explore the coast 100 years ago.
Surgery is over. DH said he felt no pain at all. Must go next Wednesday to get the stitches out and results. He's now in his chair with his foot elevated watching TV. Will probably be snoring in no time.
Willow - so glad everything is going well. Hugs to your DH!
Happy to hear it went fine- I hope he's all better soon.
Good news!
Willow, so glad to hear your DH is doing well. Hope all continues to go that way!
Saw Lynn last night at the post office so had a chance to give her my wishes in person. Guess she will be going home tomorrow. Lynn, by the time you are reading this I hope you are well on your way to breathing so much better! Hugs!!!!
Willow, Glad your DH's surgery went well. Take good care of him while he rests up!
I was thrilled to have the opportunity to visit Pony's home and garden today. It is amazing what she has done in only a year! Both house and yard reflected an incredible talent for design and originality. GOOD JOB GIRL! I can't wait to get a chance to see it when the flowers are blooming!
*blush* Thank you. :)
Photos? Of my place? Nothing but nubs and dead stuff right now... not a good photo op. hehe. Come see me in the spring. ;)
Well, you're welcome anytime before then too... but there's nothing to see but dormant beds right now. hehe.
There. Got my garlic and raspberries planted, and did some more cleanup. I almost didn't go out there today, but couldn't pass up the rain-free weather. My back is still mad at me from shoveling that truck full of dirt yesterday- I think I'm going to be taking it real easy the next couple of days.
You deserve it. FEET UP!
I gots my recliner and my electric blankie... I'm set! :D
^_^
So glad I've only had minor back pain in my life -- I attribute such health to superior moral fiber.
I guess I need more moral fiber in my diet.
*snerk*
Soferdig--- We have an alcohol free street party here in Kalispell on New years --
WHAT PLANET IS KALISPELL FROM?
Surely not in this warped dimension.
I got me my "I was bucked in Augusta" T-shirt somewhere
and would find it if I still had some of the brain cells I lost getting it.
Do they still close the whole town down and party in it?
And that Red Rooster way back when in Great Falls and some
rock climbers who could still walked while I crawled. I know its
a few hours to the east of there but people kept getting ornerier
getting closer to the mountains.
So howdy and good night, there's a book full just on this thread
much less all the books you guys stay up with.
sorry for the interruption -- something about batteries
and moral fiber and I don't have a clue and don't think
I should get too involved.
No, no, dirt! Anyone who can correctly spell 'ornier' must stay!
