I see a full moon a'risin', I see chocolate on my thighs....

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

well I think you are on the right trac Venice add anything but leftover food. Peelings are good but may cause knats.

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

That is what a I a problem before when I started a tiny compost pile, ghats!! and other little bugs! I was too close to my door!!!

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

I would love to have a closed drum that I could turn. Then left over food would be good and make a terrific compost with lots of nutrients to add to the soil.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

yes I keep a small waste can in the kitchen to put grounds and peelings in but have to empty it at least once a week to keep the knats out of the house.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Venice I throw my coffee grounds on top, and eggshells too. I rinse the eggshell and crumble it.

I don't see why you couldn't put it all on top except maybe the leaves and mulch might not be broken down enough by spring. But I'm suire it won't hurt anything.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Isn't that kind of like that lasagne gardening?

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Ok, I was reading about lasagne gardening. Glad you mentioned it, JJ!

I guess typically you start with newspaper or cardboard but I don't have a weed problem so I don't think I need that.

One site talked about 2 times brown than green. I don't want to use food. So what other type of green is there if isn't food? Other sites talked about putting peat between each layer. But I am not interested in buying anything.

By the way, do you think horse manure would bother Kitty?

Keaau, HI

Definitely cover the ground with a bunch of mulch & compost for the Winter. Dust the top of the garden area with calcium carbonate (lime) too.
Are you familiar with the soil in your area? What is its' background analysis?

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

I would think kitty would stay away from horse manure, venice.

Maybe if you stick with tea bags and coffee grounds and rinse eggshells it would be ok.
I really am guessing here.

Maybe dmail Jim41?

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

Glad to see you Dave. Now she can get some real help.

Dave, I think you told us one time that your house is up high. Then maybe you don't have a problem with flooding or you washing away! lol

Keaau, HI

Hi Carol, everything is post & pier construction here. No problem being indoors. Going outside to do chores is a bit damp.

Woodhull, IL(Zone 5a)

It is Pedilanthus tithymaloides, Devil's Backbone.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

Thank you!

Keaau, HI

Keep those cuttings on the dry side Trina, or they will rot. Let the soil dry out, between waterings. It is a very drought resistant plant.

Leicester, NC(Zone 8a)

that sounds serious Dave lol Back out, yall have a good night!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

Flowers, night! Have a good evening!

Indianapolis, IN(Zone 5b)

If there is anyone out there, hope you are having a good evening.

Night! And sleep well.

Ditto on what Dave said Trina even with what appear's to be a little Sedum morganianum in your last photo as well.

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I'll have to double check that other plant Rachel....sorry I had a couple of the boys here so I took advantage and we moved around some BIG plants in the dinning room

Good to hear you had some help with moving around your plant's. "boy's" can come in handy from time to time;O) I was speaking of the plant in the lower right hand corner of your last photo;-)

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I didn't think I had gotten the other shelf in the picture! Dry side got it...most (not all, I'm still rearranging) of the stuff in that room is the plants that don't need watered often, because that shelf is rather difficult to actually reach some of the plants on so I put things on it that don't need watered often and can take a LOT of light as the window faces dead east

Canton,IL &Dent Coun, MO(Zone 5b)

I was gonna read ya off the exact name but all I put on that stick is donkey tail. Baby girl is sleeping on the couch cause she can't walk up the stairs, I don't want to disturb her so I didn't want to turn the light on and find one of the others to see the exact name
