I'm here. lol
Good morning you two. I was thinking it must be about time to do that Dave. I'm not on dial-up now but too bad the ones who are don't speak up if they need to cut it off.
Good Morning! Beautiful daylily.
I'm here too, just your not so normal pain in .......... Lee
I followed you, can you keep me Please, Please.... LOL. That is a gorgeous daylily.
I'll check in again later, Linda
That leaf looks like a Calandula. I think.
Jeanette
The flower also could be one.

Good mornin:
so what does everyone have planned for th long cold winter?
I am moving in my plant cart so I can start some propagation in january. I am going to try double impatiens as well as a few other things. I am also going to drag my peach butterfly ginger as its set bud. I just hope I can get some seed to set. That would be way kool.
Its funny... last year I was in a panic as to what can I move in and what will just have to suck it up and do its best in the gh. Mt black bamboo did quite well in there and seems to be hanging in there.
Seeds: I bought some hellebore seed as well as a buncg of other stuff. I am planing a supplies order from BT growers supply. I am going to try some 2" cells for direct stick and sell. Anyone have any ideas for my new trial?
Lee: I did not forget about you. I am hopeing to wade through my seeds and get some packs out to you. Also next spring I will send you some starter plants. I think it will be better that way so you can pay attention to everyone else this winter
Well thats about it for now.
Dave
How are you feeling Dave? Pretty tough couple of days? Hang in there. Jeanette
I am doing ok these days. Been real busy with fam stuff.trying to get my self set for the late winter/spring 2010 ....I really hate fall going into winter.... should settle down soon.
Funny thing is I seem to be getting around better than last year so its a great thing.
Dave
Dave, that is wonderful. About it being better getting around than last year. That must be an improvement. Isn't that what we all aim for?
Jeanette
Hi Everyone, hope all is well, I saw snow in topeka this morning so if any of you are getting the nasty white stuff, I wish for you a cup of hot chocolate, a seat by the window, a comfy afghan and a good book.
I checked the weather this morning and I am not supposed to have any temps below 50 for the next 10 days. Maybe I will be able to get my plants separated as to what needs to be protected and what doesn't before it drops too low. I can now start planning the conversion of the aviary. I have hired 2 men to come and take down the wire cage parts indoors and out, and hopefully I can get lots of shelves put up where there once were cages. I miss the birds a lot, but I am adjusting. I just feel like I am not taking care of them. I should be going out first thing to feed them. It is weird and will take a while.
I have been trying or organize and package the seeds I have collected this summer. There were a lot more than I thought I had collected too. I was quite surprised. When I get it done, I will update my list and let everyone know.
Hope everyone has a great day. I'll check in later.
Linda
Morning Linda and everyone else,
Yep, a couple of inches of the white stuff here. Not too bad temperature wise tho so it probably won't be around long.
Glad you have things moving along with the sunroom Linda. I know you will miss the birds but your health comes first. So, does that mean that you can't have any animals around? I was going to suggest a cat or dog, or both. LOL Either and/or would be a lot of company.
How is your mom doing? Is she recovering? I hope things will get back to normal by Christmas.
I am watching that piece of the thunbergia plant carefully. It appeared that it might have spider mites. Yuck!! You sure wouldn't want me sending those to you. I hope I can get it out of here before freezing otherwise it will be here all winter and I sure don't need another plant. Besides those plants grow crazy wild in here. The thunbergias.
Gotta run, have a good week everybody, Jeanette
Good afternoon all:
Yes I am doing better and thats the goal.I had to make a mad dah today to get everyone tucked in for our flurries tonight. winds kicking in the cold. covewred everyone with leaves and buttoned down the Greenhouse. we are trying a new system in the garage with a propane heater and my plants in with it.You never realize how many tropicals you end up with untill its time to move them inside.
I might even get a set of seeds on the peach butterfly ginger. crossing my fingers.
Linda I hope your mom is doing well. and I am praying for a good transition from birds to plants for your out building... I guess its a greenhouse now.
A good discussion will be what is the cheapest heat source for a garage heater to keep the plants alive and in the 40's outside the closed off shelves with heat mats? The little propane heater we have uses the little bottles and they run 4.86 a pair. I am doing a time test to see how long they last on low. but if its 4.86 a day thats going to cause my wifes head to spinn and explode through her nose.... It kinda sucks having an accountant for a wife... she watches every penny. I have looked at the Hoy Dawg heaters and they are about 500 dollars plus plumber to run the gas. any suggestions would help.
stay warm
Dave
Dave have you checked out the "super warm 5 english heater" from Greenhouse Megastore? It sells for 85.00 but runs for 3 1/2 days on 4.6 litre , I am thinking of getting one just as an emergency heater for the house. And when I get the greenhouse built using it along with another one. It will supposedly heat a seven by eight greenhouse and frost proof a bigger one.
Just received the package I ordered from FarmTek: http://www.farmtek.com/farm/supplies/prod1;ft1_greenhouses_accessories-ft1_commercial_greenhouse_kits-ft1_greenhouse_equipment_kits_2;pg104733.html , but of course, the heater is back-ordered. Grrrrrr.....
Dave, is your garage insulated? Is your electricity pretty high in your area? How big is your garage, the space that you want to heat? Cement floor? A lot of different things to think about.
I don't blame your wife. That has nothing to do with having a bean counter for a wife. That is expensive.
Is there a way you can wall in a small area for the plants and just heat that rather than a whole garage?
When we moved into this house one of the first things we did was wall in a n 8x12 foot space for a pantry with 6" insulated walls with 2 of them outside walls, in the basement. This was for a pantry. Now my basement is heated. So, I was trying to keep this small room cool. It stays right between 45 and 50. This year, I moved things around down there to get my brugs in it. Seems to be working fine.
You are talking just the opposite. You need to keep a space warm. If you use steel or wood, whichever is cheaper studs, would it be too expensive to make a small room in your garage to heat?
Just another option to think about.
Jeanette
Hi Everyone,
I am making the transition and I really appreciate all of your encouragement. I really miss all of the birds talking to me in the mornings and during the evenings, when my "house babies" wanted to play.Jeanette, not to worry, I still have 2 dogs, a cat, ( giving them up is not an option) and a bearded dragon and if my son ever finds her, a corn snake that took leave of her aquarium. ( Needless to say, until the snake reappears, I am very careful where I put my feet.LOL) {it's a long story, but I think she went home with someone else.} But I will keep myself busy with the other furry children. ( I don't mess with the snake or lizard.!)
Mom is "almost"normal now, and most of the time, you wouldn't be able to tell she has slowed down a good bit. Her strength doesn't last long anymore, but she still wants to go anytime.so our shopping sprees and active days are shorter and sometimes further apart than they used to be. These past 6 weeks that I have been sick have really been rough because I haven't been able to spend any time with her, until this past sunday. I don't care how old I get, I still want my moms time and attention..
The aviary will become a greenhouse now. There is still a lot of work to do, but most of the heavy work is done.
The cages/flights have been taken down and the floors cleaned, but now I need to scrape walls and put up shelving and lights. I am wearing a mask and taking lots of breaks to do this.
On the days that I have to heat it ( which will be thankfully few) I will use a little electric heater that I used for the birds. It looks like an old radiator and actually doesn't cost very much to run. I will only use it if the temperatures go below 40.
You can also use gallon jugs of warm water in a pinch. They will actually hold their heat for quite a while, provided they stay pretty close together.
I have begun to plant daylily seeds for next spring. I made my first crosses this summer and so I am excited to see what grows. I won't have to protect these seedlings from anything but the squirrels. They can be overwintered outside with no problems. hopefully, I will start some iris seeds as well and experiment with a few other perennials that may be simply sown in site rather than winter sowed in containers.
Anyway, I hope everyone has a great week. I will probably spend the rest of mine sorting seeds.
take care, Linda
Sounds like you are going to be fine Linda. And I am glad your mom is doing good too. It is good that she wants to go out even if she does get tired. It will come back little by little. Just takes a long time. Slowly and you won't notice it much.
Are the fellas done that you had hired to do the heavy work? You know cleaning the walls etc. is heavy work too. Maybe you should have them doing that. Good that you are using a mask while working.
I used to have a cat that brought in snakes and lizards. Those were just garder snakes. Don't think I would like what you have.
Well, have a good week, and don't work too fast. No big hurry.
Jeanette
Howdy:
Is everyone ready for turkey day??? Believe it or not we drug out the tree today. Geeeze...
so what is the plan for thanksgiving? anyone traveling? Anyone braving black friday? I have done it in the past. Its crazy lines around target and people at bestbuy at 3:00 in the afternoon the day before.
Ok on subject. anyone going to do any propagation over the winter? I am thinking of doing some lantana, verbena and double imps. Got my propagation cart into the garage and 2 shelves total room is for 36 flats. I am thinking of doing 2" sheet flats. I hope to start in the begining of january so I will have everyone ready for spring (15th april). any thoughts on this idea?
Dave
Possibly, good grief!!, to eat, no, no, nope, Sounds good to me. Are you starting them from seed or cuttings? What kind of lights are you using? Gotta see the set up. How about some pictures.
Have a wonderful Thanksgiving everybody!!! Can't believe it is here. Not ready for that tree either Dave.
And Dave, you didn't answer any of my questions about heating your garage. Was that any practical ideas I had about putting up a couple of walls for a plant room? Just to heat that much?
Jeanette
Same here, only I started some already. Probably started them a little earlier than I should have but was having a bad day and needed something relaxing to take my mind off things. Wishing all of you a wonderful Thanksgiving and hope we all get through it without to much overeating. YEAH RIGHT like that's gonna happen, at least with me anyway. I'm trying Cajun Basted Turkey this year so we'll see how that turns out. Put a little Breast in along with it done the traditional way just in case, Also for the first time we are having King Crab legs as appitizers. Picked up 10 pounds on sale and both Rose and I love them so we thought lets add them to the menu.
What is your address, and what time is dinner? Put 2 more plates on, we'll be there. LOL, love the crab legs. Sounds wonderful.
What was it you started? Were they seeds, or cuttings? Tell us about them. It will be months before I can do that.
Jeanette
good morning ...oops afternoon:
I will be starting them from cuttings and plugs. It takes 4 to 6 weeks for me to get them rooted out so some things will be done with plugs.
we built a small room for the step son and its occupodo at the moment. I am hopeful I will take possession next fall. if the rest of our visitor will cooperate and move to their own digs. its like 10 x 10 and should be easy to keep heated.
I will get some pics later thisafternoon. and the walls would not be an option as it was like pulling teeth to get the room built. I am going to use a small space heater to keep some of the chill off and I have the doors to the heat and waterheater open so it should help some.
Dave
Well, maybe the housing situation for the roomers will improve next year. That is just around the corner. Also, maybe the job situation will improve for a lot of people too. Hopefully.
Are you using shop lights Dave? I have a metal halide on the plants in the house. They do pretty good with that. I have a track lite with a light fixture for the HPS or Metal Halide, but don't have it set up. Decided tdo put my brugs etc. in dormancy instead. Don't know that I will do any more than I normally do in the spring to start seeds.
Jeanette
Well: last year I got a propagation cart with 4 levels of lights and nesting trays holding 16. I am going to set up some more lights from the cheap hardware at HD or lowes. it seems to work quite well. of course the heat mats help also.
Wish me luck. ohhh yea pics to follow
Dave
Ok, I remember your shelving. Pretty nice. I have to get one more shelving unit myself. I get the chrome shelves. They are wonderful. They will hold 20. Are they what you are using with yours to get to 36 flats? I have 3 of those now, but not all for my plants. Wish so.
Then I put 2 4 ft shop lights on each of 5 shelves. Works real good. Now how long until you can put those outside? If you pot them up where do you put them? They take a lot more room at that stage. You would need a holding stage for several months here. That would mean more lights and more room between the shelves. Sounds like spring. LOL,
Jeanette
Hi Jeanette:
Yes I will hold them until spring. I am planning to try to get 1200 of the little ones going in January. Here its ifey on wether lantanna and verbena will die back so I think they are good choices to start off with. I am going to put a small space heater in their area to help with the chill. My only issue is the lighting issue. I only have 4 shelves with lights. but I will do it a piece at a time. Our frost free date is april 15th and I can most likely get them out the first of march. Now I may have to do a fast dash with sheets and beach towels a few nights but I am used to that anyway. I am really surprised we have yet to see any of the fluffy stuff. usually we have had one dusting by now.
I will fill my flats outside and stack them by the outside door until I am ready and then pull them into the garage a couple of days before I plant them. I am thinking i will split the orders up into 2 batches so I can plant 600 and then do another 600 when I am ready for them. It will be like 15 flats at a time to get them planted and I truely think I can get that much done over a day or two.
The one issue I have is the BIL & stepson are still working on organizing the garage. they started a year ago. boy they flipped when they were told the plants were going into the garage... but hey its my garage.
One thing I just remembered was the nesting trays do not fit the 1020 trays exactly. I can get them fitted into the nesting trays but there is a 1/2" gap from the bottom to the drainage holes in the pots. I have to buy 14 nesting trays, 8 light fixtures, and 8 heat mats. I am hopeing that the lantanna will root quickly so I can move them off the heat and start more cuttings. I am not sure if it will work but I am trying to do this on a shoe string. I started out with 5 plants and 3 years later I have a huge grouping of hardy ornamentals planted and trying to get more next year with a few wholesale flat purchases. I believe sticking to the newest and hotest plants I should do ok.
I wish i had the crome bakers shelves but we had the plastic ones already and I feel they will do quite well until I can get it all nice and shiny. I am hopeing DW will let me put up a bigger GH. I spotted the clear fiberglass rippled sheets and they have the fitted mounting. I am still tossing around the option of regular lumber vs the alluminum studs they are using.
My poor GH has started to lean and sag so I am thinking I have a few years left. A month ago I lost one of my roof pannels and I managed to get it back in place but it wont take much to move it out of place once I remove the protective blankie next spring. I am hopeing to be able to buy the materials from my growing fund instead of the household fund. I know my wife would be a bit more cooperative on size if she did not have to find the funds to build it.
Oh well enough of my general fantasy future. I kind of look at it if you don't try you will never make it happen but even if you put forth the effort it might just happen. The pic is of the planting cart with the bamboo/banannas in thye way that I am using.
Dave
Dave, it looks like you have a big job just getting the plants that you have right there arranged for light. Now if that were me, they would be dead by now. LOL, I'm serious. my plants would not put up with sitting in the dark like that.
Sounds like you have done a good job with your parent plants. That's good. I want first pick at the lantanas when you are ready to sell them.
Jeanette
Jeanette: You have 1st choice. Most of the plants are tropicals I like to hang on to. I don't know why I brought in the bamboo, ginger and bananna's they are huge. the bananna's are in 15 gallon pots.
Last time I tried to over winter them bare root I lost all but 2. the pic is of my peach butterfly ginger bloom last year. This years bloom is sad because it went dry and hit with cold water one day. I swear they are so picky. I hope the bigest ginger does better in its 5 gallon pot, he was breaking the pot. I hope to get a couple of years out of the transplant.
I am thinking I will plant them next spring so I can let them freeze down and come back from the roots, well at least the hardy ones will come back. I do have 3 black and 3 of the cream/tan/pink sweet potatoe vines and 3 lantanna's for cutting on. I realize I cant get enough cuttings from them all so I will suppliment my cuttings with ordered ones.
I just hooked up my cart and left them on for extra light. I finally get to take a break. oh yea time to wrap xmas gifts. we are doing presents on saturday with the grand babbies. we try to get them to come over at thanksgiving to do it so we can not be so stretched out. I f they were here in tulsa it would not matter but a 3 hour trip is kinda tough to squeeze into one day.
Oh well its on to seed inventory for next year.
Dave
What is that Dave? Is the tall plant in the middle of your picture the ginger? Is that it blooming? Are you going to get cuttings the same place that Lee did last year?
Lee, Did you decide whether you were going to do a mini group, like Dave does, coop on the cuttings, sweet potatoes etc. this next spring? I know you were kind of kicking the idea around. I don't remember the name of the company you got them from.
Jeanette
Jeanette:
yes the huge flowering plant is the butterfly ginger. I will probably bust them up and plant new pots to expand the numbe of pots I have. Yes I am kicking the idea around. I just don't know how well it would go. anyone who wants to express an idea directly I can be reached at pughbear7@hotmail.com
Dave
The name of the nursery is North Carolina Farms inc. Hi everyone Happy Thanksgiving. I don't think I will be ordering this year, at least as of right now. Finances are pretty low since we took a $300 per Mo loss on DH retirement, and it is mighty expensive with Mom still in the rehab/nursing home and needing total care. That is why I am so blown away with all of you offering seeds and etc. I tried to start clematis from the lower vine, but they have all rotted, even used the Root starter I got from you-Dave. Maybe they will come back in the spring, there was some green showing before the weather hit. I am so darn disappointed in my plants, but it's my own fault. Guess it is the right time to start over, just when I was getting some different plants started (ones they don't grow here). Anyway, hope you all have a great day tomorrow, and will talk to all of you soon, Lee
Happy Thanksgiving everyone, count your blessing to make your holiday perfect.
Janet
Well Lee, it will be interesting to see what seeds we all end up with after the dust settles on the Piggy swap. I even asked for some clematis seeds. That makes me wonder if you would be interested in some Sumbacus Niger Black lace Elderberry seeds? I think I saw where somebody had some of those on the swap. I could see. The reason I asked is because I asked for the clematis to plant with my black elderberry. I am sure it would grow in your area. I am zone 5. Well cripes, I just looked and you are zone 3. Don't know if they would.
Do you have your greenhouse heated? Boy, to start anything in zone 3 you will have to heat it. How would you do that and would it be expensive?
Have a good day tomorrow. I am sending you a Dmail.
Jeanette
Jeanette:
I've got several different clem seeds if you would like some just send me a SASBE and I'll send about 4 different ones.
You do know that it takes them sometimes up to two years to germinate don't you?
Janet
Does it really take that long Janet? Gosh, I had no idea. I don't think I could do that. If I had a greenhouse possibly. I have to laugh 'cause my daughter plants seeds like that. She has plumarias that she started from seeds several years ago and still are not old enough to bloom. I would throw the buggers out.
Thanks, but I don't think so then. I will spend the $ for plants. LOL Really appreciate the offer tho.
Have a nice day tomorrow, Jeanette
Jeanette: Pick me pick me... I have been wanting a black sambucus either rooted cutting or seeds.
I hope everyone has had a great thanksgiving this year. we had a lot of people 14 for dinner. The grandbabbies are so cute.
Anyone doingthe black friday ??? I don'y see much worth getting out of bed that early for. I know in past years we have had some great deals. tv's dvd players etc. I think all I want to see is the previewed movies at big lots as well as a new timer for my lights. It seems I have lost the off clip for the timer.
Have a great day
Dave
Dave remind me in the spring and I will see if I have a start of my black sambacus. It has been in for 3 or 4 years now so it might have some coming up around it. Or, I will see about taking a cutting. Wonder how they would do? Very curious. Never thought of that one before.
