In about a month the sun returnes
SUN thing to feel good about
Ever notice how the days get shorter quicker in the Fall than they get longer in the Spring?
I just hate the dark mornings so much.
I get easily depressed so I psych myself up with any hope of seeing the sun return.
Does seem that way to me too, LA.
Yes, the dark is depressing. Bothers me more than the cold. Get full-spectrum lights. They really do help.
I sit in my south facing livingroom window as much as possible
My doctor gave me some vitamin D supplements. Its what we get from the sun. Staves off the winter blues somewhat. And the flu, since I refused to take the shots.
Every year at this time I wish I had skylights somewhere in the house. Maybe this year I'll have one put in.
I'd rather it be dark in the mornings than dark so early at night. When it gets dark at 5pm, I'm about ready for bed by 7...just because it feels so late.
Yes, I agree threeg---dark in the morning isn't so bad for me---that's why I like going to FL in Jan.---I sleep through the dark morning, & it stays light until 6pm there. I wish I had built a sunroom on my house---our DS is trying to talk us into moving to his town, a half hour away, (which is 5 degrees colder than our town due to elevation), and if he finds a house with a sunroom, an updated kitchen, and fewer rooms to clean (oh, & I forgot cheap, too) I might crumble. Otherwise I guess I'm stuck in this house!
Vitamin D is very important. I take supplements too. I believe the lack of sun is a major reason people get sick more in the cold months.
Yep Victor. Thats what my doc said. Calcium in the body breaks down the D. So it is good to take them together.
I think the long and the short of daylight hours is the same both seasons. It just seems slower in the spring to me cuz I want it to be faster, and faster in the fall cuz I want it to be slower. I believe in Vitamin D. When I worked up in the Beaufort with 24 hours of darkness I was always struggling with fatigue until I started taking Ds.
At least in the winter we get more direct sun coming into the windows because the sun is lower.
Fish oil is a good source of vitamin D. Take some supplements every day. Also a good source of Omega-3's. Milk is a good source of both calcium and vitamin D.
I just had some salmon tonight, so that gave me some vitamin D. Also got out in the sun for a nice long walk and working in the yard. Good thing it was a sunny day today. They said on the news that Nov. is generally the gloomiest month of the year, with less sunshine because of not just days getting shorter but with a lot of overcast days and rain, too.
I'd rather have it dark in the morning, too, rather than earlier at night. Hate it getting dark early.
Karen
I take separate supplements for both. You really need lots of D to come close to what you get from just 20 minutes of sun exposure.
I heard people with light skin need about 15-20 minutes a day of sun to get enough vitamin D without taking supplements, and people with dark skin need closer to an hour. People here in the north really suffer from a lack of it in the winter.
Karen
Milk bleck! I find February gloomiest here but overall it's mostly always sunny here. Have you been taking a salmon supplement for long Victor?
I actually like it darker in the AM since I am not a morning person. I also take a D supplement.
For years my breakfast drink has been a mug of skim milk--better than coffee, which I don't like.
They say women should drink up to 3 cups of coffee(either decaf or regular) a day and men 6 cups. But of course they keep changing their ideas.
I love milk and we drink skim here, can't have anything else with PB & J.
That leaves us alone for three cups...
I love skim milk myself, but mostly use it with cereal and don't just drink a glass of it. I like coffee but have to stick with decaf.
Karen
I don't like coffee either. When I do drink it, its more milk than coffee. Those flavored ones seem artificial to me. I used to drink a quart of milk in one sitting but can't tolerate it now very well.
If I need three cups a day, can I substitute with chocolate:-)
Looks like Vitamin D for my next store visit
It's important for many things, Jo. I keep reading more and more.
I'm not into supliments.Unless its chocolate
We should stay on Daylight Savings Time all year round. I would be happy with that!
Now chocolate is a supplement I would have no problem doing.
Karen
Chocolate is a food group. You need many servings a day or you will get really, really sick and probably die.
I wish we would, Karen. They did try it in the 70's. Too dark in the AM for the school kids.
In FL, where it stays dark in the morn, they have revolving roof lights on the school buses. As for D, I take a prescription once a week to allow me to absorb calcium, because vitamin D alone doesn't do it for me---although I do take calcium with D every day, & 3-5 servings of dairy---still have to get an IV once a year for bones!
That is a problem RD. Taking calcium does nothing if your body doesn't absorb it. My Moo is on medication for osteoporosis now and is very upset. She is so healthy in all other regards and has always taken calcium supplements so she feels cheated.
Yes - you need D or calcium pills are wasted. Magnesium is also important for bones.
Good for backs too Victor. I'm a calmag fan.
I still vote for chocolate
Me too
