It's Fall in the Northeast #4

Pepperell, MA(Zone 6a)

will have to reconsider then

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Victor, that was the link where you stated "I bought a few of these last fall, Pat." There were deodar cedars at the top of the page, and more conifers and other things below.

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Oh sorry, Karen. No - I was referring to the Zenobia.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Oh, okay! So do you have any deodar cedars? If so, how are they doing for you? I have never seen any around here.

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes - I have about six or seven. All doing very well. I really like them.

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

I like them, too. Maybe I'll try one here. Did you get yours from Fairweather? Their prices looked pretty good.

Karen

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Yes.

Thomaston, CT

Glad your car wasn't hit, Karen. Pixie, your state got walloped! I'm dreading the first snow! Victor, you're so right about the conifers showing up now...wish I had more than just pine & spruce.

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

We have snow showers this AM, ground is covered.

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

Nothing here. Just got up to 32 degrees!

Pittsford, NY(Zone 6a)

Ours wont last.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

Pixie, Don't take Sophia with you even if she is a big girl now. What a change. Love seeing Patches all grown up too. Glad they are at your house and not mine....too many bunnies in my yard already. Patti

Land of OZ, CT(Zone 6a)

Wow--so beautiful....for December especially!

Southeast, MA(Zone 6b)

Although you are not that far away from me, you are a whole zone warmer. I love that you have so much still growing and blooming out there. Is that a hellebore in the last pic, lower rt corner? Oh wow I will not see mine until april next spring. Really nice. Love the roses too.

Lower Hudson Valley, NY(Zone 6b)

Wonderful, Patti!

Shelburne Falls, MA(Zone 5a)

I saw buds on my hellebores when I decided to cut them down. Wonder if they bloomed! Better go check.

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

ngam, I was surprised to have a hellebore. It came from a coop this summer. I need to check more of them tomorrow. I was distracted by the roses and a little dog with a ball. Patti

Thomaston, CT

Those roses are beautiful, especially in Dec.! My hellebore grew a lot this summer, but no buds :(.

Denville, NJ(Zone 6b)

very pretty Patti

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Nice, Patti! I believe that hellebore you have is probably Helleborous niger, the Christmas Rose, as opposed to Helleborous orientalis, the Lenten Rose. It can bloom anywhere from Dec. to April, whereas the Lenten Rose only blooms in the very early spring, Like around March or April. http://gardening.about.com/od/winterinthegarden/a/ChristmasRose.htm My friend Karen has one that's starting to bloom now. My Lenten Roses have buds, but will be a few months before they will bloom. Once they start blooming I cut the foliage back to show off the flowers better, and they grow nice, new, fresh foliage. The foliage looks great all summer.

Here is the Helleborus Sparkling Diamond (Winter Jewels™ Series) or so that is what it is suppose to be. I got it from a coop through terra nova. But none of the others are blooming now that I got at the same time. More buds forming. Patti

This is a gem of a Helleborus foetidus Miss Jekyll that is stunning, though I have no idea what it will look like when it is fully open. I got it from Big Dipper for 9.99 in May of 2008. It didn't do anything last year. Patti

Asclepias tuberosa was self seeding today while I was out with the camera. It is still blooming away and taking over 2 beds. The butterflies will be happy. Patti

Thanks, they were being very photogenic. Good light and only a tiny breeze. Patti

Nantucket, MA(Zone 7a)

This is also a surprise. Spirea Anthony Waterer. DH cut it back in Oct and it set all new blooms. None of the others spirea set buds. Patti

Patti I picked up a blooming stinky hellebore at fairweather last spring.. it bloomed beautifully .. figures I can't find a photo

Halifax, MA(Zone 6a)

Patti, I looked up that Sparkling Diamond hellebore, and it's Helleborus x hybridis, so it could possibly be a cross between the Christmas and Lenten Rose. I would like to get on. Very pretty! I need more hellebores.
