wha those are the coolest turret birdhouses!
It's Fall in the Northeast #4
thx dnut - make them myself.
I would like to have something like that for the finches but they would have to have teensyweensy doors so the sparrows couldn't get it. Are the roofs made from shakes?
Never seen a mountain lion but I did see a bobcat when I was a teenager, way back in the dark ages.
Bill I also love those bird houses you make, very stylish. How could a bird resist such a winter abode. I have only seen one blue bird here, but wood love to see more. That one was the first since I was a kid.
Great farm pics Jen--the graveyard is interesting--wonder why only initials...
I love those birdhouses...and the bluebirds! The most feral thing I've seen around here is a big ole skunk that used to come and eat the cat food I used to put out when I was helping the local cat rescue capture the tons of kittens that used to lurk around here in the wetlands area. They would vaccinate and re-acclimate to people them so they could be adopted out. One evening I walked tight up to that skunk, which at first glance I had thought it was a cat I had been trying to capture. That skunk, which was about 2 feet away from me by the time I realized my unfortunate mistake, just turned it's head, gave me a long look, then calmly resumed eating--as I very slowly backed off--not breathing, heart pounding! LOL! And then I made a hasty retreat, and was never so careless again! When I lived in the northeast corner of CT, it was not unusual to practically bump into deer on my daily walks I miss the Nipmuck trail!
thx all!
dnut the roof's are the hardest thing to make - i made these houses without any directions, saw similar ones being sold for a few hundred dollars and figured i could figure it out so i just went for it - the picture posted has two different size houses and there is one other taller/skinnier version - the roofs are 1/2" plywood underneath cut into triangles with the edge's angled as best i could for a smooth fit and then gorilla glued together with clamps - they do not come out perfectly round although close enough - once solid i nail them to the rest main house and cut down cedar shingles into 3 or 4" pieces and begin a long process of cutting and getting the edge pieces to the correct angle - that is done freehand on the table saw with a lot of concentration especially with the small top pieces - do not want to lose a digit - their are a couple "floors" and each room is separated be cutting and wedging in walls are glued with liquid nail - can't clean out the nests as that would mean taking the house apart - birds do not seem to mind - had some woodpeckers in one last year - holes can be cut to any size, these are 1/2"
Very nice Bill, you weed, mow, maintain the yard, build birdhouse's and you can cook too huh? Cindy is a smart girl!! LOL
No wonder they look so fabby; that was ton of work!
Nice pics of the bluebirds, Bill. I never see them at my place. See all kinds of other birds, though. The ones you saw for sale were probably expensive cause they were a lot of work to make, as you discovered. Good thing you're so handy at making stuff and could save yourself some money.
Celeste, I hope your DH can gets pics of that mountain lion someday. That's a real shame he didn't have his camera that day when he was with his friend. What terrible thing to miss recording on pictures! I thought some of you might be interested in this: http://daylilyflower.com/price_lists/price_list_%20a_thru_f.htm

Thanks, Karen! When I was in NH in Sept., there was an article in The Upper Valley newspaper that said a Fish & Wildlife staffer had seen a cougar---but the F&W said it was probably a released pet---I don't think so---Doug's BIL's hunting friend had one in his field by Lake. Sunapee last year, & on Wed. night friends of ours who live about 15 miles from us, said they had 2 cubs in their yard this summer---when Dave tried to get a photo, they heard the door open & scampered. And my art teacher who lived & jogged in Colorado for 15 years, saw one in their field a few years ago---same time friends who live a few miles from them also saw it. You cannot mistake them for a bobcat! The tail is so prominent. Bill, great birdhouses---your bluebirds are lucky to have such digs!
How could a cougar be a 'released pet'??? That is all just funky weird denial methinks. Although maybe I will understand it the next time I rescue/adopt a cougar as a pet (snort). There was a bobcat on an acreage in Ontario where I spent alot of time. NO KIDDIN RD there is NO way you can mistake them for a bobcat. Bobcats are WAY smaller and don't look at all the same.
I thought Demi Moore was a cougar.
Had to scroll back to get that one! Ha-ha!
Bobcats have no tail to speak of either.
HEY Pixi, and Bbrookrd, isnt the agency you report sightings to a Govt. agency?
Do we believe everything the govt tells us?
NO that is why, they are the biggest warehouse of missinformation in the world .
Arent they in denial about UFO's?
You know what you know and thats good enough for me.
Thankss Ge, and your right.......the Gov. is the agency we have to report to. Thanks for reminding me of this, makes me feel much better!
Karen, I thought I was looking at Mt. Lion links.....1st one was a daylily link!! NOOOOOOO I can't look until AFTER Christmas!! LOL
Thanks you for the links though.
Wish I had a daylily blooming right now! The photos help this time of year. But no ordering for me either----! And Jo Ann, you are so right about the misinformation....guess they think the public are stupid.
Dont let me go there.
The kind of protectionism is insulting to most of us.
Actually I think the gov is run by aliens.
Well, Hulk Hogan's wife (or is it ex now?) left him for a much younger man, so she's definitely a cougar.
Celeste, one of my links went to a daylily site? I thought I was posting mountain lion links. Oops! I happened to be going through their list to see which daylilies I might want to order for spring shipment!
You're right, Victor, the gov is run by aliens.
Karen
I dont believe it.
G Bush was definatly an american dolt.
Politics...
Three (deciduous) plants I have that still have lots of color are zenobia, Itea Saturnalia and oakleaf hydrangea.
Not much left here with leaves. Even the oaks that usually hold some of the brown leaves 'til early spring are naked. All the wind storms and rain with early freezes I guess. There are a couple red leaves clinging to the oakleaf hyd. but not many. So now I have to go look up zenobia. I hope you are not adding to my list again Victor.
It's a great plant, Pat.
Okay Victor it looks like another winner. Is it fast growing or slow? I like the color, shape of the leaves and the little bell flowers aren't to shabby either. Does it require a lot of water once established?
Link so others can enabled too: http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/go/84928/
No - I never water it. Moderate paced grower.
I bought a few of these last fall, Pat.

Looks great paired with dark foliage plants - JM's, physocarpus, weigela, etc. Also nice with very dark green companions.
Thanks for the info Victor, it's on the list.
Any time. You won't regret it.
Did anyone have wind damage to their plants? Part of a tree came down in the road next door to us about 2 minutes before our car got there....it took me about 5min. to clear the roadway---2 cars stopped behind mine, but no one helped clear....my yard is full of pine cones, I'll never get them raked up!
Wind wasn't that severe here.
Victor, which ones on that page did you get? There were a lot of conifers listed there. I would love to get deodar cedar here. It's native to the Himalayas. I used to see it a lot in Reno, NV when I lived there, but have not seen any here. Maybe not the right climate.
Marilyn, had a few branches come down near my car, on one side and behind it. None hit the car, though. I keep expecting one day to find a big branch on top of my car. Sometimes I worry that whole tree will fall on it.
Karen
This storm brought over a foot of snow to the mountains, and wind was bad enough in that it flattened a plane hanger in Western Maine.
More than 70,000 power outages were reported and drivers from Farmington to West Paris had to weave around trees — both live and dead — that toppled onto roadways.
Which link, Karen?
Nice how this time of year all the evergreens in the area 'pop out', now that the deciduous trees are done. You see some great ones in the distance you never see during the growing season.
just started reviewing a list of conifers for next year
Have deodar, Bill??
no i do not - looked at them last year and thought it would grow too big - mostly looking at dwarf's
They're slow growers and there are plenty of dwarf ones.
