Morning Glories: for the love of purpurea #3

(Zone 7a)

This is too good a thread to allow it to become inaccessible to slow-dial-up folks, so I hope Luvsgrtdanes won't mind if I start a continuation.

We came from here - http://davesgarden.com/community/forums/t/1030985/

Rebecca bloomed later along this path, but the morning light was so beautiful when this pic was taken, that I'm posting it to give an idea how much shade these purpureas can take (much more than nils, in my garden) (Here's Ipomoea purpurea 'Rebecca' later on - http://davesgarden.com/guides/pf/showimage/185858/ )

Thanks Karen for the new thread. I was hesitant with the winter coming upon many of us...

These Dilute Joyce Cobb are still going strong for me. We have been lucky with no major frost yet. I am hoping to get a few more seeds. I noticed as the weather and light changed the lighter the flower became.

You can see the purple is still there.

Ronnie - That is an interesting theory about the light. I wonder if the seeds from your almost white blooms will produce typical colored blooms or diluted blooms?

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Becky I wonder the same thing, here is a pic from the same vine in the begining of the month.

Ronnie - Those are beautiful! I asked because I also see many of the blooms on my vines changing over time as Fall approaches (and the shift in sunlight changes) or the vines start to die. Any seeds I have grown in the past (F1 or F2) seem to produce the typical blooms. But I don't know if the seeds came from earlier blooms or late blooms (that were mutants). Too many seeds to know for sure as they all get collected into the same cultivar baggie. I did not take the time to be selective about the seeds I picked off the vines. (sigh) So ... I was just wondering if anyone has been selective> If so, what did you get when you grew out an F1 or F2? :-)

those are lovely Ronnie, mine have been doing strange things with the weather too they're producing lots of little flowers now?? it's like they can't stop.... :-)

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Colin I have a lot of little flowers too!

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Lovely blooms Ronnie.
Karen, love the gate to your "Secret Garden"
My Milky Way is still blooming every day

me too on the little flowers

thank you, Jackie

Jackie - Love those Milky Way! The white flowers really stand out against the dark green foliage. Your leaves are nice and healthy, and big still! Mine have shrunk and look raggedy. But still getting blooms much to my surprise. Apparently, some of the seeds dropped into the pot and new sprout are germinating. Why not! It's still 88 degrees here today! Ugh!!!!!

Another of those unusual blooms on Blue/Purple shibori/flake I. purpurea. I think this bloom should be called "Lightning!" It looks like a streak of lightning across a dark blue evening sky. :-)

Karen - I like the light blue painted gate to your garden. It really stands out against all the dark green lush plants. I thought when I first saw the photo that it was a window, but then saw the path. Nice!

I have both pink and Purple/Blue Flaked vines growing in the same pot. I keep trying to cross them. The blooms I cross wind up dropping off the vines. But I don't cross them, then they produce pods. Go figure!

This is a Pink Flaked that has just a small amount of flakes in it! I like it! Makes you look twice at the blooms! :-)

Becky they are both sooo nice! I would love a few seeds if you get any!

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Ronnie - Oh! I've got plenty of seeds for both the blue/purple and pink Flaked Shibori I. purps! So no problemo there! You will definitely get some. :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Becky. Yes the purpurea leaves are really pretty and large.
About 6 inches tall this summer. Love your bluish purple
flaked bloom. I have one of those still in a black 6 pk,
going to pot it up for winter growing.
I really like the pink flaked too.

(Ronnie), PA(Zone 6b)

Thanks Becky!!!

Jackie - You will love the Purple/blue Flaked blooms on that I. purpurea. Enjoy!

Ronnie - You are welcome. :-)

gardenpom - Looks like Grandpa Ott's! That was the first MG I grew. And from there I was hooked!!! :-) Some really nice photos!!! Thanks for keeping us entertained with your blooms! :-)

(Zone 7a)

Thank you, Jackie & Becky - glad you like my 'secret garden' with the blue gate. Sure wish I could keep it a secret from the woodchucks, wabbits, racoons and deer. Actually the deer aren't leaping over the 5' fence...yet? And they are a lot cuter than that fence. hmph

Karen, I loved you gate and garden path too.. good to see you.. hope u r doing well....
I still have blooms outside.. purples, pinks, blues..

Debra - Ooooh! Nice shot of those blooms! What camera do you use? It's got a good lens for sharp details. Awesome to see that you still have blooms this time of year! :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Very pretty blooms Debra.

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Good morning everyone. I usually just lurk here looking at all of the beautiful pictures on the threads because I only grew two types of MG this year (this was my first time gardening) and I don't have many pictures to post. But I just wanted to say that I love your first picture. All of the plants near the walkway and around the door are exactly how I envision my future garden. I had MGs growing around the front door of my apartment this summer and I loved it! One was Star of Yelta and truly a miracle plant. It was the only seed that germinated from a seedpack I had since the 90s that got left in a box in my parent's attic with all of my high school stuff. I had another seedpack from the same time that was Clarke's Heavenly Blue and one seed germinated from that too! I didn't fully realize how lucky I was to get any germination until I joined DG. Here's a pic of mine, it looks a lot like ones gardenpom posted. Have a good day everybody!

Nice bloom Brittany

My pic no good but this is what I got from my Shibori bluish purple flaked. Looks more like Jamie Lynn. I wasn't thinking about using
a darker background, guess I should have.

welcome to the morning glory forum, Brittany.. I am glad u are here and that is a fabulas story! pretty flowers aren't they?
Jackie , Hi ya.. I like your flower picture it is so hard to shoot white flowers anyway, but u can see the colours in there..

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Debra, I should have picked it up, pot and all, and set it in front of a green lvd plant. At least we could have seen it. Always in too much of a hurry. Now the Holidays are
almost here so it won't be getting any better. lol

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Hi Brittany! Nice Star of Yelta bloom photo. Also one of my first MGs when I started gardening 5 years ago. Glad you are finding gardening ... and growing MGs a joy! :-) If you would like a few different cultivars to grow next year, dmail me! :-)

Jackie - Nice whitish bloom ya got there! You still seem to have quite a few vines blooming even with the cooler weather. I believe that I. purpureas do like the cooler temps and seem to bloom more! My Purple and Pink Flaked are sprouting again from dropped seeds in the big pot. I may have blooms from those all winter! LOL!

Sacramento, CA(Zone 9a)

Thank you very much for the warm welcome joeswife and beckygardner. I really love morning glories, they are what has inspired me to get into gardening. Planting the old seeds was just kind of an experiment, but the flowers were so pretty I got kind of obsessed. I took pictures of them almost everyday they bloomed. :-)

Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

Thanks Becky. I still have 2 or 3 blooming in the g house and
Milky Way on the fence. Cool weather coming next week, will
probably signal the end of my outside blooms.
Looking forward to your winter blooms.

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Jackie - Are you going to attempt to grow any new seeds this winter (indoors or in the gh) or are you going to wait until Spring?

Brittany - Hopefully you will have a lot of different MGs to grow in the Spring/Summer! And snap away with the camera! I love seeing everyone's blooms! :-)

(Becky) in Sebastian, FL(Zone 10a)

Here's a Pink Flaked MG bloom which almost looks like it is solid white.

Thumbnail by beckygardener
Jacksonville, AR(Zone 7b)

I love the Pink flaked Becky. I wanted to grow some new mg's in
the g house this winter but haven't had time to even start any.
I do have 3 or 4 still blooming that may bloom for a while yet.
If I get a chance I want to plant just a few for winter blooms.
I see whiteflies in my g house already. I'm going to start some shoo fly plants
and need to make some yellow sticky traps too.

(Debra) Derby, KS(Zone 6a)

I love the abstract in that bloom..... jackie I just put fly trap ribbons up.. fungus knats are my main pollinaters right now and i do not like them.
Happy Thanksgiving For All Of Us Being Friends On Daves Garden. For All Of Us That Love Life With Flowers.
I am Thankful I can Come Here. Debra
